1. ¹ For Vaiśampāyana, Paliṅgu, Tittira [sic], Ukha, Ātreya, the author of the Pada-text, Kauṇḍinya the author of the commentary, for the authors of the Sūtras, for Satyāṣāḍha (Hiraṇyakeśin), for the handers-down of the text, for the teachers, the Ṛṣis, the hermits dwelling in the woods, the chaste ones, for those who have only one wife.

वैशम्पायनाय पलिङ्गवे तित्तिरायोखायात्रेयाय पदकाराय कौण्डिण्याय वृत्तिकाराय सूत्रकारेभ्यः सत्याषाढाय प्रवचनकर्तृभ्य आचार्येभ्य ऋषिभ्यो वानप्रस्थेभ्य ऊर्ध्वरेतोभ्य एकपत्नीभ्य इति १

2. They prepare (seats) each for his own fathers and maternal ancestors.

यथास्वं पितृभ्यो मातामहेभ्यश्च कल्पयन्ति २

3. With (the words), ‘For N.N. I prepare (a seat); for N.N. I prepare (a seat)’ (he prepares) a seat.

अमुष्मै कल्पयाम्यमुष्मै कल्पयामि । इत्यासनेन ३

4. With (the words), ‘I satiate N.N.; I satiate N.N.’ (he makes offerings of) water.

अमुं तर्पयाम्यमुं तर्पयामि । इत्युदकेन ४

5. With (the words), ‘Adoration to N: N.! Adoration to N.N.!’ (he offers) perfumes, flowers, incense, and lamps.

अमुष्मै नमोमुष्मै नमः । इति गन्धपुष्पधूपदीपैः ५

6. With (the words), ‘To N.N. svāhā! To N.N. svāhā!’ (he offers) food.

अमुष्मै स्वाहामुष्मै स्वाहा । इत्यन्नेन ६

7. With (the words), ‘I satiate N.N.; I satiate N.N.’ (he offers) water with fruits in it.

अमुं तर्पयाम्यमुं तर्पयामि । इति फलोदकेन ७

8. Having worshipped them with (the words), ‘Adoration to N.N.! Adoration to N.N.!’ -

अमुष्मै नमोमुष्मै नमः । इत्युपस्थाय ८

9. ² Having put wood on the fire to the west of the surface (on which he had performed the Tarpaṇa), and having performed the rites down to the Vyāhṛti oblations (&c., as above, chap. 18, 3-7).

अपरेण वेदिमग्निमुपसमाधाय व्याहृतिपर्यन्तं कृत्वा काण्डर्षीञ्जुहोति काण्डनामानि वा सावित्रीमृग्वेदं यजुर्वेदं सामवेदमथर्ववेदं सदसस्पतिमिति । हुत्वा प्रथमेनानुवाकेनाधीयते । काण्डादीन्वा सर्वान् । जयादि प्रतिपद्यते । स्विष्टकृदन्तं कृत्वा त्र्यहमेकाहं वा क्षम्य यथाध्यायमध्येतव्यमिति वदन्ति ९

10. With the two (verses), ‘From joint to joint,’ ‘Thou who with a hundred’ (Taitt. Saṃh. IV, 2, 9, 2) they plant Dūrvā grass at the shore of the water.

काण्डात्काण्डात् । या शतेन । इति द्वाभ्यामुदकान्ते दूर्वा रोपयन्ति १०

11. They stir up waves in the water and run a race in an easterly or northerly direction until they lose their breath.

उदधिमूर्मिमन्तं कृत्वा प्राचीमुदीचीं वा दिशमातमितोराजिं धावन्ति ११

12. When they have returned (from that race? or when they have returned from the whole ceremony to the village?) they offer cakes, coarsely ground grain, and boiled rice to the Brāhmaṇas.

प्रत्येत्यापूपैः सक्तुभिरोदनेनेति ब्राह्मणांस्तर्पयन्ति १२

13. ³ The same (rites are repeated) when they have finished the study of the whole Veda, with the exception of the planting of Dūrvā grass, of (stirring up) the water, and of the race.

एवं पारायणसमाप्तौ दूर्वारोपणोदधिधावनवर्जम् १३

14. Thus they satiate daily (after the Brahmayajña) the gods, the Ṛṣis, and the Fathers with water; they satiate them with water.
