1. In the third year (he performs) the Cūḍākarman (i.e. the tonsure of the child’s head).

तृतीये वर्षे चूडाकर्म १

2. In the fortnight (&c., as in the preceding section, Sūtra 2, down to): ‘Hail! Good luck!’ The boy sits down to the west of the fire, facing the east;

आपूर्यमाणपक्षे पुण्ये नक्षत्रेग्निमुपसमाधाय व्याहृतिपर्यन्तं कृत्वा जुहोति । इमं मे वरुण । तत्त्वा यामि । त्वं नो अग्ने । स त्वं नो अग्ने । त्वमग्ने अयासि । प्रजापते । यदस्य कर्मणोत्यरीरिचम् । इति च अत्रैके जयाभ्यातानान्राष्ट्रभृत इत्युपजुह्वति यथा पुरस्तात् । ब्राह्मणानन्नेन परिविष्य पुण्याहं स्वस्त्ययनमृद्धिमिति वाचयि-त्वापरेणाग्निं प्राङ्मुखः कुमार उपविशति २

3. ¹ To the north (of the fire) his mother or a student (brahmacārin) holds a lump of bull’s dung;

उत्तरतो माता ब्रह्मचारी वानडुहं शकृत्पिण्डं धारयति ३

4. Therewith he (or she) receives the (cut-off) hair.

तेनास्य केशान्प्रतिगृह्णाति ४

5. He then pours cold and warm water together.

अथोष्णशीता आपः संसृजति ५

6. ² Having poured warm water into cold water he moistens the hair near the right ear with (the formula), ‘May the waters moisten thee for life’ (Taitt. Saṃh. I, 2, I, 1).

शीतासूष्णा आनीय । आप उन्दन्तु जीवसे । इति दक्षिणं गोदानमुनत्ति ६

7. ³ With (the formula), ‘Herb, protect him!’ (Taitt. Saṃh., loc. cit.) he puts an herb, with its point upwards, into (the hair).

ओषधे त्रायस्वैनम् । इत्यूर्ध्वाग्रामोषधिमन्तर्दधाति ७

8. With (the formula), ‘Axe, do no harm to him!’ (Taitt. Saṃh., loc. cit.) he touches (that herb) with the razor.

स्वधिते मैनं हिंसीः । इति क्षुरेणाभिनिदधाति ८

9. With (the words), ‘Heard by the gods, I shave that (hair)’ (Taitt. Saṃh., loc. cit.) he shaves him.

देवश्रूरेतानि प्रवपे । इति प्रवपति ९

10. In the same way (he moistens, &c.) the other (sides of his head) from left to right.

11. Behind with (the Mantra), ‘The razor with which Savitṛ, the knowing one, has shaven (the beard) of king Soma and Varuṇa, with that, ye Brāhmaṇas, shave his (head); make that he be united with vigour, with wealth, with glory.’

On the left side with (the Mantra), ‘(The razor) with which Pūṣan has shaven (the beard) of Bṛhaspati, of Agni, of Indra, for the sake of long life, with that I shave thy (head), N.N.!’ Before with (the Mantra), ‘That he may long live in joy, and may long see the sun.’

एवमितरान् प्रदक्षिणम् ।

येनावपत्सविता क्षुरेण सोमस्य राज्ञो वरुणस्य विद्वान् ।
तेन ब्रह्माणो वपतेदमस्य ऊर्जेमं रय्या वर्चसा संसृजाथ पश्चात् ।

येन पूषा बृहस्पतेरग्नेरिन्द्र स्य चायुषेवपत् ।
तेन तेहं वपाम्यसौ ।

इत्युत्तरतः ।

यथा ज्योक्सुमना असत् । ज्योक्च सूर्यं दृशे ।

इति पुरस्तात् १०

12. After the hair has been shaven, they arrange the locks (which are left over), according to custom or according to what family he belongs.

उप्त्वा यथोचितं चूडाः कारयति यथर्षि वा ११

13. ⁴ A person who is kindly disposed towards him, gathers the (cut-off) hair and buries it in a cow-stable, or near an Udumbara tree, or in a clump of Darbha grass, with (the Mantra), ‘Where Pūṣan, Bṛhaspati, Savitṛ, Soma, Agni (dwell), they have in many ways searched where they should depose it, between heaven and earth, the waters and heaven.’

संयम्य केशान् । यत्र पूषा बृहस्पतिः सविता सोमो अग्निः । तेभ्यो निधानं बहुधा व्यैच्छन्नन्तरा द्यावापृथवी अपः सुवः । इति गोष्ठ उदुम्बरे दर्भस्तम्बे वा निखनति योस्य रातिर्भवति १२

14. ⁵ He makes a gift to a Brāhmaṇa according to his liberality.

यथाश्रद्धं ब्राह्मणाय ददाति १३

15. To the barber (he gives) boiled rice with butter.

सर्पिष्मन्तमोदनं नापिताय १४

16. In the same way the Godānakarman (or the ceremony of shaving the beard) is performed in the sixteenth year.

एवं विहितं षोडशे वर्षे गोदानकर्म १५

17. He has him shaven including the top-lock.

सशिखं वापयते १६

18. Some declare that he leaves there the top-lock.

शिखामन्त्रावशिनष्टीत्येकेषाम् १७

19. ⁶ Or he performs the Godāna sacred to Agni.

अग्निगोदानो वा भवति १८

20. He gives a cow to his Guru.
