०८ पार्वणव्रतम्

पूर्वमाज्यमपरः स्थालीपाकः १

1. To the east (is placed) the Ājya, to the west the mess of cooked food.

पर्युक्ष्य स्थालीपाक आज्यमानीय मेक्षणेनोपघातं होतुमेवोपक्रमते २

2. ¹ Having sprinkled (water) round (the fire) and poured Ājya on the mess of cooked food, he begins to sacrifice simply with the pot-ladle, picking out portions of the sacrificial food (without ‘underspreading’ and pouring Ājya over the Havis).

यद्यु वा उपस्तीर्णाभिघारितं जुहुषेदाज्यभागावेव प्रथमौ जुहुयात् ३

3. ² If he intends, however, to sacrifice so as to ‘underspread’ (the Havis with Ājya) and to pour (Ājya) over it, let him sacrifice first the two Ājya portions (in the following way):

चतुर्गृहीतमाज्यं गृहीत्वा पञ्चावत्तं तु भृगूणामग्नये स्वाहेत्युत्तरतः सोमाय स्वाहेति दक्षिणतः प्राक्शो जुहुयात् ४

4. He should take four portions of Ājya—five portions (are taken) by the Bhṛgus—and should sacrifice from west to east, on the northern side with (the formula), ‘To Agni Svāhā!’ on the southern side with (the words), ‘To Soma Svāhā!’

अथ हविष उपस्तीर्यावद्यति ५

5. He then cuts off (two or three Avadānas) from the Havis, having ‘spread under’ (Ājya).

मध्यात्पूर्वार्धाच्चतुरवत्ती चेद्भवति मध्यात्पूर्वार्धात्पश्चार्धादिति पञ्चावत्ती चेद्भवति ६

6. ³ (Two Avadānas) from the middle and from the east side, if he (belongs to the families who) make four Avadānas. (Three Avadānas) from the middle, from the east and from the west side, if (he belongs to those who) make five Avadānas.

अभिघारयत्यवदानानि ७

7. ⁴ He sprinkles (Ājya) on the cut-off portions.

प्रत्यनक्त्यवदानस्थानान्ययातयामतायै ८

8. He anoints the places from which he has cut them off (with Ājya) in order that the strength (of the Havis) may not be lost.

अग्नये स्वाहेति मध्ये जुहुयात् ९

9. He should sacrifice over the middle of the fire with (the words), ‘To Agni Svāhā!‘—

सकृद्वा त्रिर्वैतेनैव कल्पेन १०

10. Once or thrice, in that same way.

अथ स्विष्टकृत उपस्तीर्यावद्यत्युत्तरार्धपूर्वार्धात्सकृदेव भूयिष्ठं द्विरभिघारयेत् ११

11. ⁵ Now for the Sviṣṭakṛt (oblation), after having ‘spread under’ (Ājya), he cuts off once a very big (Avadāna) from the eastern part of the northern part (of the Havis), Twice he should sprinkle (Ājya) on it.

यद्यु पञ्चावत्ती स्याद्द्विरुपस्तीर्यावदाय द्विरभिघारयेत् १२

12. But if he (belongs to the families who) make five Avadānas, he should ‘spread under’ twice, and cut off (the Avadāna), and sprinkle (Ājya) on it twice.

न प्रत्यनक्त्यवदानस्थानं यातयामतायै १३

13. ⁶ He does not anoint the place from which he has cut off, in order that the strength (of the Havis) may be lost.

अग्नये स्विष्टकृते स्वाहेत्युत्तरार्धपूर्वार्धे जुहुयात् १४

14. ⁷ With the words, ‘To Agni Sviṣṭakṛt Svāhā!’ he should sacrifice it over the eastern part of the northern part (of the fire).

महाव्याहृतिभिराज्येनाभिजुहुयात् १५

15. ⁸ He should sacrifice oblations of Ājya on (the chief oblations of cooked sacrificial food), with the Mahāvyāhṛtis.

प्राक् स्विष्टकृत आवापः १६

16. ⁹ The insertion (stands) before the Sviṣṭakṛt (oblation).

गणेष्वेकं परिसमूहनमिध्मो बर्हिः पर्युक्षणमाज्यमाज्यभागौ च १७

17. If different sacrifices are performed together, there is only one sweeping (of the ground) round (the fire) (chap. 3, 1), one (putting of) fuel (on the fire) (chap. 7, 19), one Barhis, one sprinkling (of water) round (the fire) (chap. 8, 2), one Ājya, and one offering of the two Ājyabhāgas (chap. 8, 3).

सर्वेभ्यः समवदाय सकृदेव सौविष्टकृतं जुहोति १८

18. Having cut off (the Avadānas) for all (the single sacrifices), he sacrifices the Sviṣṭakṛt oblation only once.

हुत्वैतन्मेक्षणमनुप्रहरेत् १९

19. ¹⁰ After he has sacrificed, he should throw that pot-ladle (which he has used in the preceding ceremonies) into the fire.

प्रक्षाल्य वैतेनोद्धृत्य भुञ्जीत २०

20. Or having washed it, he should take with it (the rest of the sacrificial food), and should eat that.

न स्रुवमनुप्रहरेदित्येक आहुः २१

21. The Sruva he should not throw into the fire, say some (teachers).

आग्नेय एवानाहिताग्नेरुभयोर्दर्शपूर्णमासयोः स्थालीपाकः स्यात् २२

22. ¹¹ By one who has not set up the sacred fires, the mess of cooked food should be offered to Agni at the festivals both of the full and of the new moon.

आग्नेयो वाग्नीषोमीयो वाहिताग्नेः पौर्णमास्याम् २३

23. To Agni, or to Agni and Soma, by one who has set them up, at the full-moon (sacrifice);

ऐन्द्रो वैन्द्रा ग्नो वा माहेन्द्रो वामावास्यायाम् २४

24. To Indra, or to Indra and Agni, or to Mahendra, at the new-moon (sacrifice).

अपि वाहिताग्नेरप्युभयोर्दर्शपूर्णमासयोराग्नेय एव स्यात् २५

25. Or also one who has set up the sacred fires, should offer it to Agni at the festivals both of the full and of the new moon.

समिधमाधायानुपर्युक्ष्य यज्ञवास्तु करोति २६

26. ¹² Having put a piece of wood (on the fire), and having afterwards sprinkled (water) round (the fire), he performs the Yajñavāstu ceremony (in the following way):

तत एव बर्हिषः कुशमुष्टिमादायाज्ये वा हविषि वा त्रिरवदध्यादग्राणि मध्यानि मूलानीत्यक्तं रिहाणा व्यन्तु वय इति २७

27. ¹³ From that same Barhis he should take a handful of Kura grass, and should dip it thrice into the Ājya or into the Havis, the points, the middle, and the roots, with (the words), ‘May the birds come, licking what has been anointed.’

अथैनमद्भिरभ्युक्ष्या-ग्नावप्यर्जयेद्यः पशूनामधिपती रुद्र स्तन्तिचरो वृषा पशूनस्माकं मा हिँ सीरे तदस्तु हुतं तव स्वाहेति २८

28. He then should besprinkle that (handful of grass) with water, and should throw it into the fire with (the verse), ‘Thou who art the lord of cattle, Rudra, who walkest with the lines (of cattle), the manly one: do no harm to our cattle; let this be offered to thee! Svāhā!

एतद्यज्ञवास्त्वित्याचक्षते २९

29. This (ceremony) they call Yajñavāstu.
