०२ साधारणनियमाः

यज्ञोपवीतं कुरुते सूत्रं वस्त्रं वापि वा कुशरज्जुमेव १

1. ¹ He takes as his yajñopavīta (i.e. sacrificial cord) a string, or a garment, or simply a rope of Kuśa grass.

दक्षिणं बाहुमुद्धृत्य शिरोऽवधाय सव्येँ से प्रतिष्ठापयति दक्षिणं कक्षमन्ववलम्बं भवत्येवं यज्ञोपवीती भवति २

2. Raising his right arm, putting the head into (the upavīta), he suspends (the cord) over his left shoulder, so that it hangs down on his right side: thus he becomes yajñopavītin.

सव्यं बाहुमुद्धृत्य शिरोऽवधाय दक्षिणेँ से प्रतिष्ठापयति सव्यं कक्षमन्ववलम्बं भवत्येवं प्राचीनावीती भवति ३

3. Raising his left arm, putting the head into (the upavīta), he suspends it over his right shoulder, so that it hangs down on his left side: thus he becomes prācīnāvītin.

पितृयज्ञे त्वेव प्राचीनावीती भवति ४

4. Prācīnāvītin, however, he is only at sacrifices offered to the Manes.

उदङ्ङग्नेरुत्सृप्य प्रक्षाल्य पाणी पादौ चोपविश्य त्रिराचामेद्द्विः परिमृजीत ५

5. ² Having gone in a northern direction from the fire, having washed his hands and feet, and having seated himself, he should sip water three times and wipe off (the water) twice.

पादावभ्युक्ष्य शिरोऽभ्युक्षेत् ६

6. Having besprinkled his feet (with water) let him besprinkle his head.

इन्द्रियाण्यद्भिः संस्पृशेत् ७

7. Let him touch the organs of his senses with water:

अक्षिणी नासिके कर्णाविति ८

8. The two eyes, the nose, the two ears.

यद्यन्मीमाँ स्यं स्यात्तत्तदद्भिः संस्पृशेत् ९

9. Whatever (limb of his body) requires his consideration (whether it is pure or not), that he should touch with water (i.e. with a wet hand).

तत्रैतदाहुः १०

10. Here they say:

नोऽपस्पृशेद् व्रजन् ११

11. Let him not touch (himself with water, or sip water) while walking,

न तिष्ठन् १२

12. Nor standing,

न हसन् १३

13. Nor laughing,

न विलोकयन् १४

14. Nor looking about,

नाप्रणतः १५

15. Nor without bending down,

नाङ्गुलीभिः १६

16. Nor (throwing up the water) with his fingers,

नातीर्थेन १७

17. ³ Nor except with the (proper) Tīrtha,

न सशब्दम् १८

18. Nor uttering a sound,

नानवेक्षितम् १९

19. Nor without looking (at the water),

न बाह्याँ सः २०

20. ⁴ Nor with his shoulders put back,

नान्तरीयैकदेशस्य कल्पयित्वोत्तरीयताम् २१

21. ⁵ Nor wearing a part of his under garment as if it were an upper garment,

नोष्णाभिः २२

22. Nor with warm water,

न सफेनाभिः २३

23. Nor with foamy water,

न च सोपानत्कः क्वचित् २४

24. And in no case wearing sandals,

कासक्तिकः २५

25. ⁶ (Not) with a turban on his head (?),

गले बद्धः २६

26. (Not with his garment) tied round his neck,

चरणौ न प्रसार्य च २७

27. And not stretching out his feet.

अन्ततः प्रत्युपस्पृश्य शुचिर्भवति २८

28. ⁷ When he has finally touched (water) again, he becomes pure.

हृदयस्पृशस्त्वेवाप आचामेत् २९

29. ⁸ Let him, however, sip only water that reaches his heart.

उच्छिष्टो हैवातोऽन्यथा भवतीति ३०

30. For if he does otherwise, he remains impure.

अथ प्रत्युपस्पर्शनानि ३१

31. Now the cases in which he has to touch (water) a second time.

सुप्त्वा भुक्त्वा क्षुत्वा स्नात्वा पीत्वा विपरिधाय च रथ्यामाक्रम्य श्मशानं चाचान्तः पुनराचामेत् ३२

32. ⁹ Having slept, or eaten, or sneezed, or taken a bath, or drunk something, or changed (his garments), or walked on the high road, or gone to a cemetery, he should sip water and then sip water again.
