अर्धमासव्रती तामिस्रादौ ब्राह्मणानाशयेत् व्रीहिकंसौदनम् १

1 ¹. Having kept the vow (of fasting) through one fortnight, he should, on the first day of the dark fortnight, feed the Brāhmaṇas with boiled milk-rice prepared of one Kaṁsa of rice.

तस्य कणा-नपरासु सन्ध्यासु प्रत्यग्ग्रामात् स्थण्डिलमुपलिप्य भलायेति जुहुयाद्भल्लायेति च २

2. The small grains of that (rice) he should sacrifice (day by day) at the evening twilight to the west of the village, on a place which he has besmeared (with cowdung), with the formula, ‘To Phala’ (MB. II, 5, 17).

एवमेवापरस्मिंस्तामिस्रादौ ३

3. And with (the formula), ‘To Phalla!’ The same on the first day of the next dark fortnight.

ब्रह्मवर्यमासमाप्तेः ४

4. He shall observe chastity till the end (of the rite).

आचितशतं भवति ५

5. A hundred cart-loads (of gold) will be his.

गौरे भूमिभागे ब्राह्मणो लोहिते क्षत्रियः कृष्णे वैश्योऽव सानं जोषयेत् समं लोमशमनिरिणमशुष्कम् ६

6 ². A Brāhmaṇa should elect the site for building his house on white ground, a Kshatriya on red, a Vaiśya on black, which should be even, covered with grass, not salinous, not dry -

यत्रोदकं प्रत्यगुदीचीं प्रवर्तेत ७

7. Where the water flows off to the north-west.

अक्षीरिणः कण्डकिनः कटुकाश्चात्रौषधयो न स्युः ८

8. (Plants) with milky juice or with thorns or acrid plants should not be there.

दर्भसम्मितं ब्रह्मवर्चस्यम् ९

9. (Soil) on which Darbha-grass grows, brings holy lustre;

बृहत्तृणैर्बल्यम् १०

10. Big sorts of grass, strength;

मृदुतृणैः पशव्यम् ११

11. Tender grass, cattle.

यत्र वा स्वयं कृताः श्वभ्रास्सर्वतोऽभिमुखाः स्युः १२

12. Or (the site of the house) should have the form of bricks (?) or of . . . . . . . (?)

13. Or there should be natural holes (in the ground) in all directions.

प्राग्द्वारं धन्यं यशस्यं चोदग्द्वारं पुत्र्यं पशव्यं च दक्षिणापश्चिमद्वारे सर्वे कामा अनुद्वारं गेहद्वारम् १३

14, 15. (A house) with its door to the east brings wealth and fame; with its door to the north, children and cattle. By one with its door to the south +++(and west?)+++ all wishes (are obtained). The back-door should not face (?) the house-door.

पयसो हविः १५

Milk-rice should be offered,

कृष्णा च गौः १६

17. And a black cow,

अजो वा श्वेतः पायस एव वा १७

18. Or a white goat. Or only milk-rice.

मध्ये वेश्मनो वसां पायसं चाज्येन मिश्रमष्टगृहीतं जुहुयाद्वास्तोष्पत इति १८

19. In the middle of the house he should sacrifice the fat (of the animal) and the milk-rice, mixed with Ājya, taking eight portions (of that mixture), with (the verse), ‘Vāstoshpati!’ (MB. II, 6, I.)

याश्च पराः १९

20. And with the seven last (texts) used at the driving away of misfortune (see above, chap. I, 20, 21).

सप्तालक्ष्मीनिर्णोदे ताभिश्च २०

21. After he has sacrificed, he should distribute Balis in the different directions (of the horizon).

हुत्वा दिशां बलीन् नयेत् २१

22. And towards the intermediate points, and upwards and downwards.

अवान्तरदिशां चोर्ध्वावाचिभ्यां च २२

23. This (he should repeat) every year, or at the two sacrifices of the first-fruits (of rice and barley).

एवं संवत्सरे संवत्सरे नवयज्ञयोर्वा २३

24 ³. With the two (formulas), ‘Obeying the will’ (MB. II, 6, 7, 8), he should sacrifice two oblations.

वशङ्गमावित्येताभ्यामाहुती जुहुयाद्यमिच्छेद्वशमायान्तं तस्य नाम गृहीत्वाऽसाविति वशी हास्य भवति २४

25. He should pronounce the name of the person whom he wishes to subdue to his will, ‘N.N.;’ then that person will obey him.
