पौर्णमासोपक्रमौ दर्शपूर्णमासौ १

1 ¹. Of the sacrifices of the new and full moon, the full-moon sacrifice should be performed first.

दार्शं चेत्पूर्वमुपपद्येत पौर्णमासेनेष्ट्वाऽथ तत्कुर्यात् २

2. If (the term for the sacrifice) of the new moon comes first, he should first celebrate the full-moon sacrifice and then perform that.

अकुर्वन् पौर्णमासीमाकाङ्क्षेदित्येके ३

3. Some say that he should not perform it, and wait till the day of the full moon.

अपराह्णे स्नात्वौपवसथिकं दम्पती भुञ्जीयाताम् ४

4 ². In the afternoon, husband and wife, after having bathed, should eat fast-day food.

मानतन्तव्य उवाच श्रेयसीं प्रजां विन्दते काम्यो भवत्यक्षोधुकी क्षोधुको य औपवसथिकं भुङ्क्ते ५

5 ³. Mānadantavya has said: ‘He who eats fast-day food, obtains offspring better than himself; he gains favour; hunger will not attack him.’

तस्माद्यत्कामयेत तद्भुञ्जीत ६

6. Therefore one should eat (fast-day food) which he likes.

नाव्रत्यमाचरेत् ७

7. He should do nothing unholy (such as cohabiting with his wife).

प्रातराहुतिं हुत्वा ८

8. After he has sacrificed the morning oblation,

हविनिर्निर्वपेदमुष्मै त्वा जुष्टं निर्वपामीति देवताश्रयं सकृद्यजुर्वा द्विस्तूष्णीम् ९

9 ⁴. He should pour out the sacrificial food with (the formula), ‘Agreeable to such and such (a deity) I pour thee out:’ (this formula) referring to the

deity, or a Yajus, (is repeated) once; twice (it is done) silently.

त्रिर्देवेभ्यः प्रक्षालयेत् १०

10. He should wash (the food) thrice, (if it is destined) for gods;

द्विर्मनुष्येभ्यः ११

11. Twice, if for men;

सकृत्पितृभ्यः १२

12. Once, if for the Fathers.

मेक्षणेन प्रदक्षिणमुदायुवं श्रपयेत् १३

13. Stirring it up with the pot-ladle from the left to the right he should cook it.

शृतमभिघार्योदगुद्वास्य प्रत्यभिघारयेत् १४

14. When he has cooked it, he should sprinkle (Ājya) on it, should take it from the fire towards the north, and should again sprinkle (Ājya) on it.

सर्वाण्येवं हवींषि १५

15. Thus all kinds of Havis (are prepared).

बर्हिष्या साद्य १६

16. Having put (the Havis) on the sacrificial grass,

आज्यभागौ जुहुयाच्चतुर्गृहीतमाज्यं गृहीत्वा पञ्चावत्तं भृगूणां जामदग्न्यानामग्नये स्वाहेत्युत्तरतस्सोमायेति दक्षिणतः १७

17 ⁵. He should sacrifice the two Ājya portions (in the following way): Having taken four portions of Ājya - five portions are taken by the Bhr̥gus (or at least?) by the Gāmadagnyas [see Indische Studien, 10, 95] - (he should make two oblations), to the north with (the formula), ‘To Agni Svāhā!’ to the south with (the formula), ‘To Soma Svāhā!’

विपरीतमितरे १८

18. Others (do it) conversely.

आज्यमुपस्तीर्य हविषोऽवद्येन्मेक्षणेन मध्यात्पुरस्तादिति १९

19. Having ‘spread under’ Ājya, he should cut off with the pot-ladle (portions) of the Havis from the middle and from the eastern side;

पश्चाच्च पञ्चावत्ती २०

20. One who takes five cut-off portions (see Sūtra 17), also from the western side.

अभिघार्य प्रत्यनक्त्यवदानस्थानानि २१

21. After he has sprinkled (Ājya) on (the cut-off portions), he anoints the places from which he has cut them off, (with Ājya).

न स्विष्टकृतः २२

22. (This anointing) is omitted at the Svishṭakr̥t oblation.

अमुष्मै स्वाहेति जुहुयाद्यद्देवत्यं स्यात् २३

23. He should sacrifice with (the formula), ‘To N.N. Svāhā!’ - according to the god to whom the oblation belongs.

स्विष्टकृतस्सकृदुपस्तीर्य द्विर्भृगूणां सकृद्धविषो द्विरभिघार्याग्नये स्विष्टकृते स्वाहेति प्रागुदीच्यां जुहुयात् २४

24. At the Svishṭakr̥t oblation he ‘spreads under’ once - twice if he is a Bhr̥gu - (cuts off) once (a portion) of the Havis, sprinkles (Ājya) on it twice, and sacrifices it in a north-eastern direction with (the formula), ‘To Agni Svishṭakr̥t Svāhā!

समिधमाधाय २५

25. Having put a piece of wood (on the fire),

दर्भानाज्ये हविषि वा त्रिरवधायाग्रमध्यमूलान्यक्तं रिहाणा वियन्तु वय इत्यभ्युक्ष्याग्नावनुमहरेद् यः पशूनामधिपती रुद्र स्तन्तिचरो वृषा पशूनस्माकं मा हिंसीरेतदस्तु हुतं तव स्वाहेति २६

26. He should dip Darbha-blades (of the sacrificial grass strewn round the fire) three times, the points, the middle, and the roots, into the Ājya or into the Havis with (the words), ‘May the birds come, licking what has been anointed.’ Then, after having sprinkled (those Darbha-blades with water), he should throw them into the fire, with (the verse), ‘Thou who art the lord of cattle, Rudra, who walkest with the lines (of cattle), the manly one: do no harm to our cattle; let this be offered to thee. Svāhā!’

तद्यज्ञवास्तु २७

27. This (ceremony is called) Yajñavāstu.

सर्वत्र कुर्यात् २८

28 ⁶. He should perform it at all (sacrifices).

हविरुच्छिष्टमुदगुद्वास्य ब्रह्मणे दद्यात् २९

29 ⁷. The remnants of the Havis he should take away in a northern direction, and should give them to the Brahman.

पूर्णपात्रं दक्षिणा ३०

30. A full vessel constitutes the fee for the sacrifice;

यथोत्साहं वा ३१

31. Or as much as he can afford.
