’ आ त्वा ’ इति षडृचं द्वाविंशं सूक्तमाङ्गिरसस्य ध्रुवस्यार्षमानुष्टुभम् । अभिषिक्तस्य राज्ञः स्तुतिरूपोऽर्थो देवता । तथा चानुक्रान्तम्-’ आ त्वा षड् ध्रुवो राज्ञः स्तुतिस्त्वानुष्टुभं तु ’ इति । राज्ञो युद्धाय संनहनेऽनेन सूक्तेनाभिमन्त्रणं पुरोधसा कर्तव्यम् । सूत्रितं च–’ आ त्वाहार्धमन्तरेधीति पश्चाद्रथस्यावस्थाय ’ ( आश्व. गृ. ३. १२.२) इति ।।

Praise of the King (Royal Consecration)

This hymn has long been seen as part of a royal consecration (Rājasūya, a term first found in the Atharvaveda), whatever that rite would have looked like in late R̥gvedic times. The keyword of the hymn is dhruvá “firm”—firmness being the quality most desired in the royal candidate—and in fact the Anukramaṇī has extracted this word for the name of the poet. The affirmation of the chosen king by both the human clans (viś, vss. 1, 6) and various gods is required. Among the gods we find Indra, the arche
typal warrior king (vss. 2, 5–6), and Varuṇa, the archetypal peacetime king (vs. 5). (For these two aspects of kingship, divided between the two gods, see especially IV.42.) In addition there are the ritually connected gods, who would officiate at the consecration ceremony: Brahmaṇaspati (vs. 3)/Br̥haspati (vs. 5), who represent the verbal portion, and Agni (vs. 5) and Soma (vs. 3), who participate in the physical portion. Soma, as ritual substance, is found in verse 6, which effects the king’s installation. The hymn has parallels in both recensions of the Atharvaveda, and elsewhere in Vedic literature.

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - (त्वा) हे राजन् ! मैं पुरोहित राजसूययज्ञ में तुझे राष्ट्र के स्वामी होने के लिये राजसूयवेदी पर (आहार्षम्)लाया हूँ-लाता हूँ (अन्तः-एधि) हमारे मध्य में स्वामी हो (ध्रुवः) ध्रुव (अविचाचलिः-तिष्ठ) राजपद पर नियत-अविचलित हुआ प्रतिष्ठित हो (सर्वाः-विशः) सारी प्रजाएँ (त्वा वाञ्छन्तु) तुझे चाहें चाहती हैं (त्वत्-राष्ट्रम्) तुझसे-तेरे शासन से राष्ट्र (मा-भ्रशत्) नष्ट न हो ॥१॥

ब्रह्ममुनि - भावार्थः

भावार्थभाषाः - पुरोहित राजा को राजसूययज्ञ में वेदी पर प्रतिष्ठित करता है और सारी प्रजाएँ उसे चाहें, राजा को इस प्रकार शासन करना चाहिये कि प्रजाएँ सब सुखी रहें, प्रसन्न रहें और राष्ट्र विपत्ति को प्राप्त न हो ॥१॥

ध्रुवेण स्थिरेण हविषा पुरोडाशादिना युक्तं ध्रुवं स्थिरं सोममभिमृशामसि। अभिमृशामः। देवतामभिलक्ष्य यागार्थं वयमृत्विजः संस्पृशामः। अथो अथानन्तरमेवेन्द्रो विशः प्रजास्ते तवैव केवलीरसाधारणाः सतीर्बलिहृतः करस्य प्रदात्रीः करत्। करोतु॥६॥

ब्रह्ममुनि - पदार्थः

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - (ध्रुवेण हविषा) स्थिर उपहार के द्वारा (ध्रुवं सोमम्) राजसूययज्ञ में तुझे स्थिर स्तोतव्य निष्पन्नसंस्कृत करने योग्य राजा को (अभि मृशामसि) आशीर्वाददानार्थ स्पर्श करते हैं (इन्द्रः) ऐश्वर्यवान्परमात्मा (ते) तेरे लिए (केवलीः-विशः) अनन्यभक्त प्रजा को (बलिहृतः-करत्) उपहार देनेवाली कर देनेवाली बनाता है ॥६॥

ब्रह्ममुनि - भावार्थः

भावार्थभाषाः - राजसूययज्ञ में जब राजा को अभिषिक्त कर दिया जाता है, तो उसे स्थिर उपहार दिया जाना चाहिये और विद्वान् लोग अपने आशीर्वाद का हाथ उस पर रखते हैं, परमात्मा उसके लिए भक्त प्रजा कर देनेवाली उपहार देनेवाली बनाता है ॥६॥

ब्रह्ममुनि - पदार्थः

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - (ध्रुवेण हविषा) स्थिरेण-उपहारेण (ध्रुवं सोमम्-अभि मृशामसि) त्वां स्थिरं स्तोतव्यं राजसूये सम्पादितं राजानम्, आशीर्वाद-दानरूपेऽभिस्पृशामः (अथ-उ) अथ-च (इन्द्रः) ऐश्वर्यवान् परमेश्वरः (ते केवलीः-विशः-बलिहृतः-करत्) तुभ्यं केवलीरनन्याः प्रजाः करदात्रीः-उपहारदात्रीः सम्पादयति ॥६॥
