‘ रक्षोहणम्’ इति पञ्चविंशत्यृचं तृतीयं सूक्तम् । पायुर्नाम भारद्वाज ऋषिः । द्वाविंशाद्याश्चतस्रोऽनुष्टुभः । शिष्टा एकविंशतिस्त्रिष्टुभः । रक्षोहाग्निर्देवता । तथा चानुक्रान्तं – ‘ रक्षोहणं पञ्चाधिका पायुराग्नेयं राक्षोघ्नं चतुरनुष्टुबन्तम् ’ इति । गतः सूक्तविनियोगः । अङ्गाराभिविहरणे ‘परि त्वाग्ने इत्येषा जप्या । सूत्रितं च – धिष्ण्यावताम् ’ इत्यादिना ‘परि त्वाग्ने पुरं वयम् ’ (आश्व. श्रौ. ५. १३) इत्यन्तेन ॥

A departure from the usual themes of Agni hymns (though quite reminiscent of the second half of I.36 and to a lesser extent X.118), this long hymn is entirely devoted to Agni as “demon-smiter” (rakṣohán), the first word of the hymn, and especially to his violent pursuit of “sorcerers” (yātudhā́na). The language is gleefully and cre
atively bloodthirsty, crediting Agni with a large arsenal of weapons, mostly based on the shape of his flames, and of means of violent destruction of the enemy (pierc ing, crushing, shattering, disemboweling, etc.). The vividness of the language is enhanced by the fact that, after the first verse, Agni is always addressed in the 2nd person and almost always with imperatives. (Only vss. 15 and 18 lack direct address to Agni, though he is lurking in the background. These two verses are also the only ones in which any other gods are allowed a part of the action.)
Agni’s connection with ritual is barely mentioned in the hymn. In verse 1 the poet sprinkles him with ghee, addresses him, and kindles him, in order to ensure his protection, and in verse 4 it is made clear that the murderous power of Agni’s weap ons comes from the sacrifice and the associated ritual speech. That Agni’s fierce and aggressive protection of us stems from our ritual behavior toward him should be kept in mind—though it must be admitted that the poet seems to forget this fact for long stretches of the hymn.
Lexical repetition and phonological figures, both simple and complex, are important features of the style of the hymn. To mention only one of the complex figures, the unusual participle sphūrjáyan “sizzling” (the only occurrence of this verb in the R̥gveda) in 11c is echoed phonologically by śaphārújam “hoof-breaking” in 12b (and to a lesser extent by dhū́rvantam “damaging” in 12d).
The sheer exuberance of the hymn is contagious, at least to its translators.

(रेभे) अति शब्द करनेवाले प्रजागण के निमित्त (तत्-चक्षुः) उस यथार्थदर्शकनेत्र को (प्रति धेहि) स्थापित कर-उसके आर्त्तनाद को सुन (येन शफारुजम्) जिससे पापकारी जो वाणी के शल्य से अन्यों को पीड़ा देता है, उस (यातुधानं पश्यसि) पीड़ा देनेवाले पाप करते हुए को देखता है (अथर्ववत्) सूर्य के समान (दैव्येन-ज्योतिषा) आकाश में होनेवाले प्रखर तेज से (सत्यं धूर्वन्तम्) सत्य को विनष्ट करते हुए (अचितं न्योष) मूढ़ को जला दे ॥१२॥

भावार्थभाषाः - सेनानायक को चाहिए कि पीड़ा देनेवाले राक्षसवृत्ति के मूढ़ जनों, जो दूसरों को मारने में प्रसन्नता अनुभव करते हैं, ऐसे लोगों को तथा दूसरों के प्राणों से-प्राणों को तृप्त करनेवालों को नष्ट करे ॥१४॥

हे नृचक्षः नृणां द्रष्टः अग्ने उस्रियायाः अस्मदीयाया गोः। ‘उस्रिया अही ’ इति गोनामसु पाठात् । संवत्सरीणं संवत्सरेण भवं यत् पयः अस्ति यातुधानः राक्षसः तस्य माशीत् तत्पयः मा भक्षयतु । किंच यतमः यो राक्षसः पीयूषं पीयूषेण । विभक्तिव्यत्ययः । अस्मदीयाया गोः पयसा तितृप्सात् आत्मानं तर्पयितुमिच्छति तं प्रत्यञ्चं युद्धायात्मानं प्रतिगतं राक्षसं मर्मन् मर्मणि प्राणवियोगस्थाने अर्चिषा स्वकीयेन तेजसा विध्य ताडय । मारयेत्यर्थः ॥

(यातुधानः) पीड़ा देनेवाले दुष्ट मनुष्य (उस्रियायाः-संवत्सरीणं तस्य पयः) गौ का वर्षपर्यन्त-वर्ष भर उस दूध को (मा-अशीत्) न पीवे, ऐसा उसे दण्ड दे (पीयूषं यतमः-तितृप्सात्) उस अमृतरूप दूध से अपने को जो तृप्त करना चाहे, (तं प्रत्यञ्चम्) उसे सबके प्रत्यक्ष-सम्मुख (अर्चिषा मर्मन् विध्य) ज्वाला अस्त्र से मर्म में बींधे-ताड़ित करे ॥१७॥

ब्रह्ममुनि - भावार्थः

भावार्थभाषाः - सबके व्यवहारों को देखनेवाला नायक पीड़ा देनेवाले को गौ का दूध वर्ष भर तक न पीने दे। जो उस अमृतरूप दूध को पीकर अपने को तृप्त करना चाहे, उस ऐसे पीड़क जन को दूसरों के सम्मुख तीक्ष्ण शस्त्र से ताड़ित करे ॥१७॥

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - (नृचक्षः-अग्ने) हे नराणां कर्मद्रष्टः नायक ! भावार्थभाषाः - सेनानायक ऐसा होना चाहिए, जिसे संग्राम में शत्रुजन जीत न सके। ऐसा वैद्युतअस्त्र चलानेवाला हो, जिससे कोई न बच सके ॥१९॥

हे अग्ने त्वं हरसा त्वदीयेन तेजसा । तथा च यास्कः – हरी हरतेर्ज्योतिर्हर उच्यते । (निरु. ४. १९ ) इति । यातुधानस्य राक्षसस्य हरः हरणशीलं बलं प्रति शृणीहि नाशयेत्यर्थः । तथा रक्षसः राक्षसस्य वीर्यं च वि रुज भञ्जय ॥ ॥ ९ ॥

ब्रह्ममुनि - भावार्थः

भावार्थभाषाः - पीड़ा देनेवाले दुष्ट के बल को राष्ट्र का नायक अपने शस्त्रबल और प्रताप से नष्ट करे ॥२५॥
