अयं हरिः सोमः दिवः द्युसंबन्धीनि रोचना रोचनानि नक्षत्रग्रहमण्डलानि जनयन् तथा अप्सु अन्तरिक्षे सूर्यं च जनयन् तथा गाः अधोगन्त्रीः अपः वसानः भूमिमात्मानं वाच्छादयन् पवत इत्युत्तरत्र संबन्धः ॥

English translation:

“The green-tinted (Soma) genitive rating the luminaries of heaven, genitive rating the sun in the firmament, clothing himself with the descending water.”

Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya

Clothing himself: or, the earth

Begetting the luminous realms of heaven, begetting the sun in the waters, clothing himself in cows, in the waters—the tawny one—

Like the 1st vs. of the last hymn, also by Medhyātithi Kāṇva, this vs. is syntactically incomplete – unless we want to take the pres. participles (janáyan a, b; vásānaḥ c) as predicated, which in this case I don’t. In this case, vs. 2 can easily pick up the participial vs. 1 and provide a predicate.

ENGENDERING the Sun in floods, engendering heaven’s lights, green-hued,
Robed in the waters and the milk,

अब परमात्मा को सूर्यादि के कर्त्तारूप से वर्णन करते हैं।

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - (हरिः) पापों का हरनेवाला वह परमात्मा (दिवः रोचना जनयन्) आकाश में प्रकाशित होनेवाले ग्रह-नक्षत्रादिकों को उत्पन्न करता हुआ और (अप्सु सूर्यम् जनयन्) अन्तरिक्ष में सूर्य को उत्पन्न करता हुआ (गाः अपः) भूमि तथा द्युलोक को (वसानः) अच्छादित करता हुआ सर्वत्र व्याप्त हो रहा है॥१॥

भावार्थभाषाः - उसी परमात्मा ने सूर्य्यादि सब लोकों को उत्पन्न किया और उसी की सत्ता से स्थिर होकर सब लोक-लोकान्तर अपनी-अपनी स्थिति को लाभ कर रहे हैं ॥१॥

“He with ancient praise when effused flows in a stream, a god for the gods.”

He, by means of an age-old thought, a god from among the gods,
purifies himself in a stream, when pressed.

According to primeval plan this Soma, with his stream, effused
Flows purely on, a God for Gods.

English translation:

“The Soma juices of unbounded vigour flow for the increasing, rapid acquisition of food.”

For the ever-increasing victor [=Indra] to win the prize, they purify themselves—
the thousand-faceted soma juices.

Acdg. to Kümmel (471), the medial part. of the pf. of √vṛdh is always presential, though both Geldner and Renou tr. as preterital. My “ever-increasing” makes it sound like an inten., but of course the heavy redupl. vā- simply belongs to the pf. of this root.

Note the v-alliteration in ab: vāvṛdhānā́ya tū́rvaye pávante vā́jasātaye.

For him victorious, waxen great, the juices with a thousand powers
Are purified for winning spoil.

English translation:

“Milking forth the ancient fluid, the Soma is poured into the filter and crying out genitive rates the gods.”

Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya

I.e. where the Soma is poured forth, the gods are continually present

Milking out his age-old milk, he is poured around into the filter.
Roaring, he has begotten the gods.

The adj. pratná- ‘age-old’ is repeated here from 2a, linking the “age-old thought” (= hymn) with soma’s “age-old milk.” p-alliteration in ab: … pratnám ít páyaḥ pavítre pári …

Shedding the ancient fluid he is poured into the cleansing sieve:
He, thundering, hath produced the Gods.

Seine altgewohnte Milch hergebend wird er auf die Seihe gegossen; brüllend hat er die Götter erzeugt.

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - (प्रत्नम् इत्) प्राचीन वेदवाणियों में (पयः दुहानः) ब्रह्मानन्द को उत्पन्न करता हुआ वह परमात्मा (पवित्रे परिषिच्यते) उपासकों के पवित्र हृदय में ध्यान का विषय होता है (क्रन्दन्) और उसी शब्दायमान परमात्मा ने (देवान् अजीजनत्) देदीप्यमान चन्द्रादिकों को उत्पन्न किया॥४॥

भावार्थभाषाः - परमात्मा ने वेदवाणीरूपी कामधेनु को ब्रह्मानन्द से परिपूर्ण कर दिया है। जो लोग इस अमृतरस को पान करना चाहते हों, वे उक्त अमृतप्रदायिनी ब्रह्मविद्यारूपी वेदवाग्धेनु को वत्सवत् उसके प्रेमपात्र बनकर इस दुग्धामृत को पान करें ॥४॥

English translation:

“Soma, being purified hastens towards all desirable (wealth), towards the gods who favour the sacrifice.”

Toward all desirable things, toward the gods who become strong through truth. Soma rushes while he is being purified.

English translation:

“Soma, being effused pour down to us (wealth) consisting of kine, male offspring, horses, and strength, and abundant food.”

O Soma, when you are pressed, bring us (wealth) in cattle, in heroes, in horses and prizes,
and lofty refreshments in purifying yourself.

This vs. contains almost the same elements as IX.41.4. Our desired rewards are gómat, vīrávat, áśvāvat, vā́javat, which match 41.4 except that híraṇyavat substitutes for vīrávat there. We also want bṛhatī́r íṣaḥ, like the mahī́m íṣam of 41.4. The soma is described as sutáḥ in both, though the vocatives are different: indo versus soma. But the big difference is that 41.4 has the preverb ā́with pavasva, which licenses the accusative complements, while our passage does not. We must simply supply it here, I’m afraid.

Soma, effused, pour on us wealth in kine, in heroes, steeds, and spoil,
Send us abundant store of food.
