पुनानः पूयमानः विचर्षणिः द्रष्टा सोमः विश्वाः सर्वान् मृधः हिंसकान् शत्रून् अभि अक्रमीत् अतिक्रान्तवान् । तं विप्रं मेधाविनं धीतिभिः कर्मभिरभिषवादिभिः स्तुतिभिर्वा शुम्भन्ति दीपयन्ति अलंकुर्वन्ति ॥

English translation:

“The pure all-seeing (Soma) has overcome all enemies; (the worshippers) grace the sage (Soma) with their praises.”

Becoming purified, the limitless one has attacked all the scorners.
They [=poets] beautify the inspired poet with their inspired thoughts.

THE Very Active hath assailed, while purified, all enemies:
They deck the Sage with holy songs.

भावार्थभाषाः - परमात्मा सत्कर्मी पुरुषों को शुभ स्वभाव प्रदान करता है। तात्पर्य यह है कि सत्कर्मियों को उनके शुभकर्म्मानुसार शुभ फल देता है और दुष्कर्मियों को दुष्कर्मानुसार अशुभ फल देता है ॥१॥

अथ ईश्वरस्य सकाशात् शीलं प्रार्थ्यते।

अयम् अरुणः अरुणवर्णः सोमः योनिं स्थानं द्रोणकलशम् आ रुहत् आरोहति । ततः इन्द्रं गमत् गच्छति । कुतः सन् । अयं वृषा वर्षकः फलानां सुतः अभिषुतः सन् गत्वा ध्रुवे सदसि स्थिरे स्थाने द्युलोकाख्ये सीदति निवसति ॥

English translation:

“The tawny-hued showerer (of benefits) when effused ascends to his plural ce; he goes to Indra; he dwells in the fixed abode (of heaven).”

Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya

Sāmaveda has sutam for sutaḥ; sīdatu for sīdati

The ruddy one has mounted to the womb; the bull, when pressed, will go to Indra.
He sits in the steadfast seat.

Both Geldner and Renou treat ruhat as modal, parallel to the clear aor. subj. gámat in the following pāda (e.g., “… soll … besteigen, … soll … gehen”). But ruhat belongs to a clear them. aor. áruhat, and its zero-grade root syll. would preclude a subjunctive in any case; formally it must be an injunc. I take the sequence of verbs as referring to different stages of the ritual process, one that has just occurred, one that will now occur. Hoffmann (Injunk. 222) in fact suggests that the transmitted injunc. ruhat might represents a redactional error for ’ruhat, an augmented aor. in this sandhi context. Hoffmann’s suggestion of course results from his idiosyncratic and restrictive views on the function of the injunctive; in my opinion injunc. ruhat would work fine here as an immed. past, preceding soma’s departure for Indra. (Maur’s tr. [84] is sim. to mine.)

The Red hath mounted to his place; to India, goes the mighty juice:

English translation:

“O Indu, O Soma, quickly pour upon us from all quarters vast and infinite riches.”

Now for us, o drop, for us all all around, o Soma, attract great wealth in thousands, in purifying yourself.

The expression asmábhyam … víśvataḥ “for us all around” in b I take as a heavy specification of enclitic naḥ in Wackernagel’s position in pāda a. Most take víśvataḥ as qualifying “wealth.” The fact that this pāda (asmábhyaṃ soma víśvataḥ) appears 3x (also IX.33.6, 65.21) suggests that víśvataḥ goes with ‘us’; on the other hand, that all three occurrences involve the acquisition of wealth or other good things somewhat undercuts that argument.

On subj. 2nd sg. vidā́ḥ see comm. ad IX.19.6. As noted there, I think this is the only actual example of vidā́ḥ. The other supposed exx. are actually 2nd sg. impv. vidā́with lengthened final; their sandhi position is ambiguous and so the forms could represent -ā́ḥ as well as -ā́, and the Pp. analyses them as the former. It is in fact not beyond the realm of possibility that the original reading here was also *vidā́. An impv. would fit the context better, with immediately preceding (4b) and following (5a) impv. ā́bhara. It is possible that the original sequence *vidā́sahasríṇīḥ was interpr. as having a degeminated double -s s- (*vidā́s s…), which was then restored. The meter would be unaffected. The almost identical pāda, IX.61.3 kṣárā sahasríṇīr íṣaḥ, is transmitted with an impv. with lengthened final. Note also impv. vardhayā in 5c. An alt. tr. here would then be “find refreshments …” Curiously, both Geldner and Renou tr. as impv., though they register no discomfort with the subjunctive.

O Soma Pavamana, bring, Indu, all splcndours hitherward:
Find for us food in boundless store.

English translation:

“O Soma, being purified, bring us your worshippers wealth with male offspring, recompense the praises of him who glorifies you.”

Being purified, bring hither wealth and an abundance of heroes to our praise singer;
strengthen the songs of the singer.

As thou art cleansed, bring hero strength and riches to thy worshipper,
And prosper thou the singer’s hymns.

Bring, dich läuternd, unserem Sänger Reichtum, die Meisterschaft; stärke die Lobreden des Sängers!

भावार्थभाषाः - जो लोग परमात्मपरायण होकर अपनी वाक्शक्ति को बढ़ाते हैं, परमात्मा उन्हें वाग्मी अर्थात् सुन्दर वक्ता बनाता है ॥५॥

English translation:

“Indu, Soma, being purified, bring us wealth from both worlds; Indu, showerer (of benefits), (bring us) glorious (wealth).”

Being purified, o drop, bring hither double-lofty wealth—o Soma, bullish drop—bring us wealth worthy of hymns.

O Indu, Soma, being cleansed, bring hither riches doublypiled,
Wealth, mighty Indu, meet for lauds.

Wenn du dich läuterst, o Somasaft, so bring uns doppeltgroßen Reichtum, preislichen, du bullenhafter Saft!

भावार्थभाषाः - जो लोग परमात्मा के गुण-कर्मानुसार अपने स्वभाव को बनाते हैं, परमात्मा उन्हें ऐहिक और पारलौकिक दोनों प्रकार के सुख प्रदान करता है ॥६॥ यह ४० वाँ सूक्त और ३० वाँ वर्ग समाप्त हुआ ॥
