Indra
Apālā Ātreyī
7 verses; paṅkti 1–2, anuṣṭubh 3–7
This deceptively simple, and much discussed, hymn consists of a monologue embedded in a charm for healing and fertility. Unusually the speaker is an unmar ried girl, who undertakes a clandestine soma ritual for Indra, with erotic over tones, in ultimate preparation for her marriage. It begins with a contextualizing introduction (vs. 1a–c): a maiden going to fetch water finds soma on her way. She brings it home and addresses first the soma and then Indra. She announces to soma her intention to press it (1de): as it turns out she presses it with her own mouth (2c) and offers it to Indra along with all the accoutrements of a real soma sacrifice (vs. 2). Indra arrives for the soma, and she seeks to understand his intentions, even as she assures him that she will keep his presence a secret (3ab). The lexeme translated “recite” (ádhi √i) is an item of pedagogical vocabulary, appro priate to her age and stage of life, and refers to students’ oral recitation of their lessons; in this context it seems to mean “reveal your presence verbally.” She then urges the soma to flow softly, in contrast to the excessive noise usually associated with soma’s preparation (3cd). In verse 4 she tremulously speculates to herself about whether Indra will be able to achieve what she wants from her private soma-pressing, and worries, as an adolescent girl apprehensive about sexual ity and marriage, about sexual intercourse with Indra, a rather formidable first sexual partner, one might think. In the next two verses (5–6) she expresses her wishes—three different types of hair growth: on the fields, that is, plants; on her father’s bald head; and on her “belly,” the last wish indicating a desire for pubic hair as a sign of sexual maturity. Apālā’s words end here; the final verse says nothing directly about whether Indra fulfilled her expressed wishes (though we take it as implying that he did), but simply states that he purified her by pulling
her through increasingly smaller holes, rendering her “sun-skinned,” quite pos sibly a reference to the curing of teenage acne, a frequent accompaniment to the entry into sexual maturity.
This R̥gvedic hymn is extensively quoted and embedded in a prose narrative in the Jaiminīya Brāhmaṇa (I.220–21). For detailed discussion of this hymn and its middle Vedic version, see Jamison (1991: 149–51, 165–67). That account and this translation are deeply indebted to and dependent upon the ground-breaking discus
sion by Hanns-Peter Schmidt in chapter 1 “The Affliction of Apālā (R̥gveda 8.91)” in his 1987 Some Women’s Rites and Rights in the Veda (pp. 1–29).

English translation:
“A young woman going to the water found Soma in the path; as she carried it home she said, I will pressyou for Indra, I will you for Śakra.”
Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya
This ṛca is said by Apālā. Śāṭyāyaṇa Brāhmaṇa has a legend:Apālā, the daughter of Atri, being afflicted with a disease of the skin, was repudiated by her husband; shereturned to her father’s hermitage, and there practised penance. One day she wen out to bathe, intending tomake a Soma offering to Indra, and as she was returning, she found some Soma stalks on the road. Shegathered them and ate them as she walked. Indra, hearing the sound of her jaws, thoght it was the sound of theSoma stones, and appeared before her, asking whether there were any Soma stones bruising there. Sheexplained the reason for the sound, and Indra turned away. She called after him, “why do you turn away? You gofrom house to house to drinkt he Soma, now then drink the Soma ground by my teeth and eat fried grains ofbarley”. She then added, without paying him respect, " I knownot whether you are Indra, but if you come to myhouse I will pay you due honour". Feeling however sure that it was really Indra, she addressed the latter half ofthe third verse to the Soma in her mouth. Indra then, falling in love with her drank the Soma as she wished. Shethen triumphantly exclaimed (ṛca 4): " I have been repudiated by my husband and yet Indra comes to me". Indrathen granted her a bon and she thus hose, “my father’s head is bald, his field is barren, and my body is destituteof hair; make these things grow”. Indra granted the three boons

English translation:
“You who go from house to house a hero bright in your splendour, drink this Soma pressed by my teethtogether with fried grains of barley, the karambha, cakes and hymns.”
Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya
Karambha = mixture of fried barley mealand butter or curds
Jamison Brereton
“You over there, the dear little hero who goes earnestly looking from house to house,
drink this (soma), pressed by the jaws—(soma) accompanied by grain, by gruel, by cakes, by hymns.
Jamison Brereton Notes
Narten (Yasna Haptaŋhaiti, 146 and n. 45) identifies vīraká- as a word belonging to women’s language (Frauensprache) and thinks it should be tr. “mein lieber Held” rather than “Männlein.” But I don’t see why the diminutive of affection can’t be an element here; Apālā is also trying to domesticate him and make him more approachable.
The substances Apālā offers to Indra to accompany the soma form a ritually defined group of offerings elsewhere (III.52.1), the Savanīya-puroḍāśa-. For disc. see Jamison 1991: 162-63, 172-73. Note that, judging from dhānā́vantam karambhínam / apūpávantam ukthínam “possessing grain, possessing gruel, possessing cakes, possessing hymns” with -vant- and -ín- suffixes respectively, it is difficult to maintain the often suggested semantic difference between -vant- and -ín-, with -ínmarking inherent possession and -vant- more contingent possession.
Griffith
Thou roaming yonder, little man, beholding every house in turn,
Drink thou this Soma pressed with teeth, accompanied with grain and curds, with cake of meal and song of praise.

English translation:
“We wish to know you, but here we know you not, O Soma, flow forth for Indra first slowly, then quickly.”
Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya
First slowly: śamair iva śanakair iva
Jamison Brereton
“We wish to comprehend you; we will not ‘recite’ you aloud.
Softly-like, ever so softly-like, o drop, flow around for Indra.
Jamison Brereton Notes
As noted in the published introduction, the first hemistich contains pedagogical vocabulary, the contrastive “we wish to comprehend” (ā́… cikitsāma) and “we will not ‘recite’ you” (ádhi caná tvā némasi). The lexeme ádhi √i lit. ‘go over’ (which goes nicely into Engl. in its idiomatic sense); in later Vedic it means ‘study (a text)’, which is an oral culture means ‘recite aloud’, and this appears to be its meaning here (contra most tr., incl. Geldner and Schmidt). Followed directly by cd, where Apālā insistently asks the soma to flow “softly” (śánaiḥ … śanakaíḥ), this hemistich indicates that Apālā wants to learn and understand Indra’s intentions, but she will not reveal his presence by announcing him aloud. (See disc. Jamison 1991: 164 and n.
43.)
Griffith
Fain would we learn to know thee well, nor yet can we attain to thee.
Still slowly and in gradual drops, O Indu, unto Indra flow.
Geldner

English translation:
“May (Indra) repeatedly make us powerful, may he do abundantly for us, may he repeatedly make usvery rich; often hated by our husband and forced to leave hi, may we be united to Indra.]”
Jamison Brereton
“Will he be able? Will he do it? Will he make us better off?
Shall we, though coming as husband-haters, unite with Indra?
Jamison Brereton Notes
The compound patidvíṣ- is usually tr. with passive sense (Geldner: ‘vom Gatten gehasst’), but this has more to do with the scenario for the hymn constructed by the tr.
and comm. than with the structure of the compound. Grammatically speaking we would expect an active sense: passive value is fairly rare in root noun compounds, and, as Scarlatta points out (249), though he does not abandon a possible passive value, the other -dviṣ- compounds are all active in sense. An interpretation guided by the compound structure would give ‘hating husbands’, a perhaps not unlikely sentiment in a pre-adolescent girl about to be married off in ancient India. The verse expresses the anxious excitement of a girl on the cusp of marriagability and adulthood (Jamison 1991: 170-71).
Griffith
Will he not help and work for us? Will he not make us wealthier?
Shall we not, hostile to our lord, unite ourselves to Indra now?
Geldner

English translation:
“Thice, Śatakratu, did you purify Apālā, in the hole of the chariot, in the hole of the cart, and in thehole of the yoke, and you did make here with a skin splendent like the sun.”
Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya
Thrice did you purify: Indra draggedher through the wide hole of his chariot, the narrower hole of the cart, and the small hole of the yoke, and shecast off three skins. The first skin became a hedge-hog, the second an alligator, the third a chameleon
Jamison Brereton
In the nave of a chariot, in the nave of a wagon, in the nave of a yoke, o Indra of a hundred resolves,
having purified Apālā three times, you made (her) sun-skinned.
The next three hymns, 92–94, should be grouped together, according to Oldenberg (1888: 218).

Cleansing Apala, Indra! thrice, thou gavest sunlike skin to her,
Drawn, Satakratu! through the hole of car, of wagon, and of yoke.
Geldner
