Krṣ̥ ṇa Āṅgirasa or Viśvaka Kārṣṇi
5 verses: jagatī
This hymn clearly depicts a precise situation, with the poet Viśvaka making a direct appeal to the Aśvins, but the particular nature of the situation is difficult to ascer tain. The two named men, Viśvaka and Viṣṇāpū, are found together three times else where, always in Aśvin context. In nearly identical Kakṣīvant passages (I.116.23, 117.7) the Aśvins “gave” (dadathuḥ) Viṣṇāpū to Kr̥ṣṇiya Viśvaka (Viṣṇāpū com pared to “a lost herd-animal” in 116.23); in X.65.12 they “let loose” (áva sr̥jathuḥ) Viṣṇāpū to Viśvaka. The first verb occurs twice in our hymn (2b, 3b), though not with a personal object; the other verb has a close synonym (mumócatam “release”) in the refrain of all five verses. Thus, our hymn seems roughly to conform to the other R̥gvedic occurrences of these personae. Unfortunately this is all we know of the story: neither of the named men occurs in later texts, and though Geldner provides a contextualizing narrative, himself relying on Sāyaṇa, with Viśvaka the “grieved and deserted” (betrübte und verlassene) father who catches sight of his son, a poet who had gone far away to seek his fortune, there is no real evidence for this plot in the R̥gvedic passages—not even for the father–son relationship. Like many
of the Aśvin myths it is intriguing and probably ultimately unknowable. The Viśvaka/Viṣṇāpū episode seems only to occupy the first three verses, which may form a tr̥ca, as Oldenberg suggests (Noten ad loc.). The last two verses (4–5) retain the final-pāda refrain (of vss. 1–3), but omit the repeated c-pāda with its mention of Viśvaka. The appeal to Indra for help (vs. 4) and the praise of truth (vs. 5) seem loosely attached to the rest of the hymn.

English translation:
“Dasras, physicians, sources of happiness, you both were (the objects) of Dakṣa’s praise; Viśvaka nowinvokes you for the sake of his son; sever not our friendships, but fling loose (your reins and gallop here).”
Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya
Objects of Dakṣa’s praise: an allusion to the thousand Ṛks uttered by Dakṣa or Prajāpati, i.e. the AśvināŚastra, which was won by the Aśvins in a race; cf. RV. 1.116.2; Aitareya Brāhmaṇa 45.7; sever not ourfriendships: as worshipper and object of worship
Jamison Brereton
Since both of you are wondrous healers, embodying joy, and both of you are (men) of skill and of speech,
Viśvaka calls upon you at the making of bodies [=sons?]. – Do not keep us away from partnership with you. Release (him? [=Viṣṇāpū?])!
Jamison Brereton Notes
Following Kümmel (344) I take the pf. babhūváthuḥ as presential.
For the possible connection of the verb in the refrain, object-less mumócatam, with other appearances of Viśvaka and Viṣṇāpu in the RV, see the published introduction.

English translation:
“How Vimanas once praised you, and you gave him understanding for the attainment of excellent wealth!Viśvaka now invokes you for the sake of his son; sever not our friendships, but fling loose (your reins and gallophere).”
Jamison Brereton
How shall one of expansive mind now offer praise to you? You two have given insight (to me? Viṣṇāpū?) to seek a better state.
Viśvaka calls upon you at the making of bodies. – Do not keep us away from partnership with you. Release (him?)!
Jamison Brereton Notes
The danger of imposing an after-the-fact narrative explanation onto a RVic hymn is shown by Geldner’s tr. of vímanāḥ here as “Betrübte” (distressed, afflicted).
Although a negative reading of this compound is possible (“without a mind, with a mind [gone] away”), the only other occurrence of the word in the RV (X.82.2) is as a positive attribute of Viśvakarman, “vast in mind.” There is no reason that this sense cannot be found here as well; the next pāda states that the Aśvins gave him insight (dhíyam), and the question in our pāda – how (kathā́) to praise the Aśvins – need not be “how can someone with a disordered mind manage to praise them?” but rather “which of the many possible ways should someone with a capacious mind choose for praising them?” The questions in VIII.84.4-7, a hymn that belongs with ours though the Anukramaṇī attributes them to different poets (see remarks before VIII.81 in the published translation), are similar.
Griffith
How shall he praise you now who is distraught in mind? Ye Twain give wisdom for the gainof what is good.
Visvaka calls on you as such to save his life. Break ye not off our friendship, come and set me free.

English translation:
“Gladdeners of many, you have given to Viśṇāpu this prosperity for the attainment of excellent wealth!Viśvaka now invokes you for the sake of his son; sever not our friendships, but fling loose (your reins and gallophere).”
Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya
Viṣnāpu = name of the ṛṣi’s son or grandson
Jamison Brereton
Since you two have given this radiance to Viṣṇāpū to seek a better state, o you who provide many enjoyments,
Viśvaka calls upon you at the making of bodies. – Do not keep us away from partnership with you. Release (him?)!
Jamison Brereton Notes
The thematic connection between VIII.84 and our hymn suggested ad vs. 2 continues here: edhatú- ‘radiance’, only here in the RV, echoes edhate in VIII.84.9, which characterizes the successful devotee of Agni – there tr. ‘thrives’, though ‘blazes brightly’ or sim. would be more vivid and literal.
Griffith

English translation:
“We summon that hero to our protection, (the enjoyer) of wealth, the possessor of the Soma, who nowdwells afar off and whose hymn is most plural asing (to the gods) like his father’s, sever not our friendships, but flingloose (your reins and gallop here).”
Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya
We summon that hero: the ṛṣi here prays for the presence of his absent sonViṣṇāpu; it is for the son to protect the father; possessor of the Soma: ṛjīṣin is an epither of Indra, possessorof the stale Soma, ṛjīs. a (RV 3.32.1; 36.10); in RV 1.32.6, ṛjīṣa is applied to Indra, as enemy-repelling
Jamison Brereton
And this hero, the winner of spoils and possessor of the silvery drink [=Indra], do we call upon for help, even though he is at a distance,
upon him whose favor is sweetest like that of a father. – Do not keep us away from partnership with you. Release (him?)!
Jamison Brereton Notes
Though Geldner identifies the vīrá- ‘hero’ as Viṣṇāpu, as Renou points out ṛjīṣín- ‘possessing the silvery drink’ is almost exclusively used of Indra (and never of humans), and we are more likely to call upon this god than upon a rather vaguely defined mortal.
Griffith
And that Impetuous Hero, winner of the spoil, though he is far away, we call to succour us,
Whose gracious favour, like a father’s, is most sweet. Break ye not off our friendship, come and set me free.
Geldner

Grassmann
Und diesen Helden, der Beute gewinnt und vorwärts dringt, den rufen wir zu Hülfe, auch wenn er in der Ferne weilt, ihn, dessen Wohlwollen sehr lieblich wie das eines Vaters ist.

English translation:
“The sun-god by truth extinguishes his beams (in the evening); he spreads abroad (in the morning) thehorn of truth; truth verily overcomes the might of the eager assailant; therefore sever not our friendships, but flingloose (your reins and gallop here).”
Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya
A praise of truth, satyapraśaṃsā; as the sun swerves not from hisappointed course, and as truth or adherance to right conquers earthly foes, so the Aśvins must fulfil the duties ofancient friendship and hear the ṛṣi’s prayer
Jamison Brereton
By truth god Savitar performs his labors; the horn of truth is extended widely. The truth overpowers even those doing great battle. – Do not keep us away from partnership with you. Release (him?)!
Jamison Brereton Notes
What the truth is doing here insistently in this final verse isn’t clear to me.
As Renou points out, though the rare verb śamāyá- is derived from the root √śam ‘labor’ (presumably as a deverbative from a 9th-class *śaṃnā́ti [see, perhaps, ścamnan I.104.2]), it participates in a secondary word play between śáma- ‘hornless’ (I.32.15, 33.15) and śṛ́ṅga- ‘horn’ – hence the rather surprising appearance of the enigmatic “horn of truth” in b.
Griffith
About the holy Law toils Savitar the God the horn of holy Law hath he spread far and wide.
The holy Law hath quelled even mighty men of war. Break ye not off our ftiendship, come and act me free.
Geldner
