हे अग्ने त्वं नः अस्मान् महोभिः पूजाभिर्महद्भिर्धनैर्वा पाहि रक्ष। विश्वस्याः बहुविधात् अरातेः अदातुः सकाशात् अदानाद्वा पाहि। त्वमेव महद्धनं दत्त्वादातुरदानाद्वा सकाशाद्रक्षेत्यर्थः । यद्वा । महोभिर्युक्तस्त्वमिति योज्यम् । उत अपि च द्विषः द्वेष्टुः मर्त्यस्य मर्त्यात् सकाशात् पाहि । अस्मभ्यं बलं दत्त्वेति भावः । अथवा मर्त्यस्य द्विषो द्वेषाद्रक्षेति संबन्धः। अरातेरित्यस्यादानादिति पक्षे तत्रापि मर्त्यस्यादानादिति संबन्धनीयम् ॥

English translation:

“Agni, do you protect us by great wealh from every niggard and mortal foe.”

Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya

Mahobhh = mahadbhirdhaqnaiḥ, pūjābhiḥ, by our worship; mahadbhiḥ pālanaiḥ, by your great protections;

Arāteḥ = from thenon-giver, from the non- giving (i.e. niggardliness) of every one

O Agni, protect us by your great powers from all hostility
and from mortal hatred.

O AGNI, with thy mighty wealth guard us from all malignity,
Yea, from all hate of mortal man.

Night hastens far away from Dawn, her sister; The Black one yields the ruddy god a pathway. We call on you two rich in kine and horses: By day and night ward off from us the arrow.

Schütze, Agni, du uns mit deiner Herrlichkeit, vor jeder Mißgunst und vor Feindschaft des Sterblichen!

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - (सखायः) हे मित्रो ! (क्रतुम्) शुभकर्म की (इच्छत) इच्छा करो, अन्यथा (शरस्य) वृत्रहन्ता उस परमात्मा की (कथा+राधाम) कैसे आराधना कर सकेंगे, कैसे (उपस्तुतिम्) उसकी प्रिय स्तुति करेंगे। अतः शुभ कर्म करो। जो ईश (भोजः) सब प्रकार से सुख पहुँचानेवाला है। (सूरिः) सर्वज्ञ और (यः) जो (अह्रयः) अविनश्वर है ॥१३॥

भावार्थभाषाः - इसका आशय विस्पष्ट है प्रत्येक मनुष्य को शुभ कर्म करना चाहिये। यज्ञादि करने से केवल आत्मा का ही उपकार नहीं होता, किन्तु देशवासियों को भी इससे बहुत लाभ पहुँचता है और दुराचारों से बचता है, शरीर में रोग नहीं होता। मरणपर्य्यन्त सुख से जीवन बीतता है ॥१३॥

हे प्रियजात अग्ने वः तव पौरुषेयः पुरुषसंवन्धी मन्युः क्रोधः न ईशे नेष्टे बाधितुम् । अस्मदादिभी रक्षितत्वादिति भावः । दिवाचराः खलु पुरुषाः अतो दिवा तव हानिर्नास्तीति भावः । अथ रात्रिंचरा रक्षःप्रभृतयः । तेभ्योऽपि पीडा नास्तीत्युच्यते । त्वमित् त्वमेव खलु क्षपावान् रात्रिमान् असि । रात्रौ ह्यग्निर्विशेषेण तेजस्वी भवति ॥

English translation:

“O you who was born loved, no human anger can hrm you– you only are the lord of night.”

Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya

We willprotect you from men by day, and you will protect yourself by night from evil spirits, as fire then burns brightest

For no human fury is master of you (gods), o (Agni), born dear. Just you are the protector of the earth.

The 2nd hí pleonastically+++(=redundant)+++ doubles the one in nahí.

For over thee, O Friend from birih, the wrath of man hath no control:
Nay, Guardian of the earth art thou.

Come to the pious mortal bringing bounty, O Aśvins, hither with your chariot speeding. Do ye ward off from us disease and weakness. By day and night, lovers of sweetness, guard us.

Denn kein menschlicher Grimm hat über euch Götter Macht, du Liebgeborener. Du allein bist der Schirmherr.

Denn nicht Menschenzorn bemächtigt eurer sich, zur Huld geborne, Du zumal bist ein Beschützer.

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - (समह) हे सर्वपूज्य जगदीश ! तू (बर्हिष्मद्भिः) सर्वसाधनसम्पन्न (भूरिभिः+ऋषिभिः) बहुत ऋषियों से (स्तविष्यसे) पूजित होता है। (शर) हे विघ्नविनाशक ! (यद्) जो तू (इत्थम्) इस प्रकार (एकमेकम्+इत्) एक-एक करके (वत्सान्) बहुत वत्स सत्पुरुषों को (पराददः) दिया करता है ॥१४॥

भावार्थभाषाः - इसका आशय यह है कि उसकी पूजा जब महा महर्षि करते हैं, तब हम क्यों न करें और जब देखते हैं कि जो उपासक हैं, उनको क्रमशः धन की वृद्धि होती है। परमात्मा एक-एक देकर उसको लाख दे देता है, अतः वही चिन्तनीय है ॥१४॥

हे अग्ने सः स्तुत्यस्त्वं नः अस्मभ्यं वस्वो वसु धनमुप मासि प्रयच्छसि । हे ऊर्जो नपात् बलस्य नप्तर्न पातयितर्वा हे भद्रशोचे स्तुत्यप्रकाश । तदेवादरार्थं पुनराह। रयिं धनं विश्ववारं सर्वैर्वरणीयं धनं देहि । अथवा यद्वसूप मासि अस्मभ्यं दातुं तद्धनं गृहादिलक्षणं तच्च रयिं दानार्हं गोहिरण्यादिकं च देहीत्यपुनरुक्तिः ॥ ।

English translation:

“Son of strength, auspicious in brilliance, associated with all the gods, give us all desirable wealth.”

Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya

Withall the gods: sa no vasva upamāsi = sa no viśvebhir devebhiḥ

O child of nourishment, of fortunate flame, along with all the gods give us wealth consisting of all desirable things.

As such, with all the Gods, O Son of Strength, auspicious in thy flame.
Give us wealth bringing all things good.

May your propitious coursers whirl your chariot Toward us at the dawn now flushing on us. Bring it, by traces drawn and fraught with riches, Hither with horses yoked by Order, Aśvins.

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - (मघवा) परमैश्वर्य्यशाली (शौरदेव्यः) शूरों और देवों का हितकारी ईश्वर (नः) हमको (त्रिभ्यः) तीनों लोकों से (कर्णगृह्य) कान पकड़ कर (वत्सम्) वत्स लाकर देता है, (न) जैसे (सूरिः) स्वामी (धातवे) पिलाने के लिये (अजाम्) बकरी को लाता है ॥१५॥

भावार्थभाषाः - ईश्वर जिसको देना चाहता है, उसको अनेक उपायों से देता है। मानो तीनों लोकों में से कहीं से आनकर उसको अभिलषित देता है, क्योंकि वह महाधनेश्वर है। हे मनुष्यों ! उसकी उपासना प्रेम से करो ॥१५॥

हे अग्ने तं स्तोतारम् अरातयः अदानशीला द्वेषिणः रायः रयिमन्तः न युवन्त न पृथक्कुर्वन्ति । रायो धनाद्वा न युवन्त । यं दाश्वांसं हविर्दातारं त्रायसे पालयसे ॥

English translation:

“That sacrificing mortal whom you, Agni, protect the niggardly cannot separate from wealht.”

Hostilities do not keep that mortal away from wealth, o Agni,
the pious one whom you safeguard.

Malignities stay not from wealth the mortal man whom, Agni, thou
Protectest while he offers gifts.

That car, three-seated, lords of men, that bears you With riches laden well, drives forth at daybreak: On it, O Nāsatyas, to us come onward, That, with all nurture fraught, it may approach us.

Nicht wird Mißgunst dem opferspendenden Sterblichen den Reichtum vorenthalten, den du beschirmst, Agni.

Böse können nicht, o Agni, dem, den du beschützest, rauben Seinen Schatz dem frommen Manne.

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - (अग्ने) हे सर्वाधार हे सर्वशक्ते जगन्नियन्ता ईश ! (त्वम्) तू (महोभिः) स्वकीया महती शक्तियों के द्वारा (विश्वस्याः) समस्त (अरातेः) शत्रुता दीनता और मानसिक मलीनता आदि से (नः) हमको (पाहि) बचा (उत) और (मर्त्यस्य) मनुष्य के द्वेष, ईर्ष्या और द्रोह आदिकों से भी हमको बचा ॥१॥

भावार्थभाषाः - इससे यह शिक्षा देते हैं कि तुम प्रथम निष्कारण शत्रुता न करो। केवल मनुष्यता क्या है, इस पर पूर्ण विचार कर इसका प्रचार करो। अपने अन्तःकरण से सर्वथा हिंसाभाव निकाल दो ॥१॥

English translation:

“Wise (Agni), he whom in his performance of the sacrifice you incite to attain wealth, by your protectionwalks (lord) among crowds of cattle.”

Whom you impel toward the stakes at the winning of the
wisdom—o Agni, inspired poet—
he by your help will arrive at cows.

“(Let them come near) Agni, Jātavedas, son of strength, for the giving of all desirable good things, whois doubly immortal as (perpetually burning) among priests, among the sacrificers.”

Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya

Wh os doubly immortal (amonggods) and among men, a being equivalent to ca;

Viśi = vikṣu yajamāna rūpasu; in the house or in the family

To Agni, the son of strength, Jātavedas, for a gift of valuable things, (Agni,) who once again has come to be the immortal here among
mortals, the most delighting Hotar in the clan.

To Agni Jatavedas, to the Son of Strength, that he may give us precious gifts,
Immortal, from of old Priest among mortal men, the most delightful in the house.

Zu Agni, dem Sohn der Kraft, zu Jatavedas, daß er Kostbarkeiten schenke, der abermals, der Unsterbliche bei den Sterblichen, in der Niederlassung der wohlredendste Opferpriester ward.

भावार्थभाषाः - इसका आशय है कि ईश्वर प्रतिक्षण वायु, जल, अन्न और आनन्द का दान दे रहा है। दुष्टजन इनको भी अपने आचरणों से गन्दा बनाते रहते हैं अथवा गौ, मेष, अश्व, हाथी आदि इनको चुरा-चुरा कर नष्ट न करने पावें, क्योंकि ईश्वर सबका रक्षक है ॥८॥

“I praise Agni, (O sacrificers), for the inauguration of your divine offering; (I praise him) when thesacrifice is proceeding; (I praise) Agni first of the gods, at our rites; (I praise) Agni when the enemy approaches; (Ipraise) Agni for the attainment of land.”

Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya

For the attainment of land: the fruit of the sacrifice

Agni (we beseech) on your behalf with sacrifice to the gods, Agni as the ceremony proceeds,
Agni first in insights, Agni when a charger (is at stake), Agni to assure success to the cultivated lands.

I supply “we beseech” as the verb, from the twin pragātha vs. 13c īmahe, despite the interruption by a clause containing nom. agníḥ (13ab).

kṣaítrāya sā́dhase has to be interpr. in connection with the cmpd. kṣetrasā́dhas- (III.8.7, VIII.31.14). Geldner’s interp. “zur Schlichtung (des Streites) um ein Feld” [for the settlement (of conflict) regarding a field] seems unnecessarily specific and contextually unsupported.

Agni, made yours by sacrifice, Agni, while holy rites advance;
Agni, the first in songs, first with the warrior steed; Agril to win the land for us.

Den Agni rufe ich für euch gottesdienstlich, den Agni, wenn das Opfer vor sich geht, den Agni als Ersten, wenn es sich um die dichterischen Gedanken, den Agni, wenn es sich um das Rennpferd handelt, den Agni zur Schlichtung des Streites um ein Feld.

अग्निः देवः सख्ये समानख्यानाय नः मह्यम् । सख्युः कर्म सख्यम् । तस्मिन् वा । नोऽस्मभ्यम् इषाम् इषोऽन्नानि ददातु । यः अग्निः वार्याणां धनानाम् ईशे ईष्टे स ददात्विति । तमेव अग्निं तोके पुत्रार्थं तनये तत्पुत्रार्थं च शश्वत् बहु धनमन्नं वा ईमहे याचामहे । वार्याणामीश इत्युक्तत्वादेवं लभ्यते । कीदृशमग्निम् । वसुं वासकं सन्तं सर्वदा वर्तमानं तनूपाम् अङ्गानां पालयितारम् ॥

English translation:

“May Agni in his friendship give us food for he is the lord of all desirable things; we solicit abundance forour sons and grandsons from Agni, who is the giver of dwellings and the protector of our bodies.”

Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya

May Agni giveus: mahyam = naḥ; may agni give food to me, his friend

Let Agni in fellowship give us of his refreshments, he who is master of valuable things.
Agni we beseech over and over when progeny and posterity (are at
stake), since he is the good one, the protector of our bodies.

May Agni who is Lord of wealth vouchsafe us food for friendship sake.
Agni we ever seek for seed and progeny, the Vasu who protects our lives.

Agni soll uns in Freundschaft Speisegenüsse geben, der über die Kostbarkeiten gebeut. Den Agni bitten wir immer wieder um leiblichen Samen, ihn, den Gütigen, den Schützer der Person.

In Freundschaft schenk uns Agni von den Labungen, der über Güter frei verfügt; Wir bitten Agni stets um Kind und Enkelschar, als guten Leibbeschützer ihn.

English translation:

“Land with your hymns for our protection, Agni, whose splendour lie outspread; laud Agni for wealth, OPurumīḷha, for other offerers are lauding that far famed one on their own behalf; solicit of Agni a house for (me)Sudīti.”

Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya

Whose splendours lie outspread: śīraśociṣam, śayanasvabhāva rociṣkam; (RV 4.5.10): aśanaśīla jvālam

Agni—with songs reverently invoke him of sharp flame for help;
Agni the famed (do) men (invoke) for wealth, o Purumīḷha; Agni as
shelter for Sudīti.

Solicit with your chants, for help, Agni the God with piercing flame,
For riches famous Agni, Purumilha and ye men! Agni to light our dwelling well.

Den Agni rufe zum Beistand mit Gesangesversen, den Scharfflammigen, den Agni um Reichtum, o Purumilha, den berühmten rufen die Männer, den Agni für Suditi um Schutz.

Den Agni fleh um Hülfe an, durch Lieder ihn, der heiss erglüht; Um Gut, o Purumidha, und o Männer ihr, um Schutz zum Glanz den herrlichen.

English translation:

“We praise Agni that he may keep off our enemies; we praise Agni that he may give us joy and security;he may be worshipped as the giver of dwellings to the ṛṣis; he who is as it were the protector of all men.”

Agni we hymn to keep hatred away from us; Agni to give us luck and lifetime.
In all the clans he will be the one to be invoked like a helper, the lighter of the morning rays.
The next group consists of only three hymns, X.72–74 and has no real signature features.

Agni we laud that he may keep our foes afar, Agni to give us health and strength.
Let him as Guardian be invoked in all the tribes, the lighter-up of glowing brands.

Den Agni loben wir, daß er die Feindschaft von uns fernhalte, den Agni, daß er uns Glück und Segen gebe. In allen Niederlassungen soll er wie ein Gönner anzurufen sein, der Erheller der Morgenstrahlen.

Den Agni flehn wir, fortzutreiben unsern Feind, ihn, dass er gebe Heil und Glück, Den man als Helfer rufen muss in jedem Haus, er sei Entflammer hellen Lichts.
