SRI SUKTA.
[Sri Sukta is a hymn of fifteen verses in praise of the Goddess Sri or Lakshmi and is a ‘Khila Rik’ (supplemental hymn) of the Rig Veda. The first two are addressed to Jatavedah (Narayana) and request him to bring Sri to the devotee. The third and the fourth are invocations to Sri herself and by the fifth, the devotee does the ‘Prapatti.’ By the next five, he prays for the removal of all evil and ignorance, and for the gift of learning and wealth and fame. The next two request the father and attendant of Sri to make Her dwell in his house. The last three are, as in the opening verses, addressed to Jatavedah requesting him to bring Lakshmi to him.]
हरिः ॐ ॥
हिरण्य-वर्णां हरिणीं सुवर्ण-रजत-स्रजाम् ।
चन्द्रां हिरण्मयीं लक्ष्मीं जातवेदो म आवह ॥१॥
- O Jatavedah!1 Bring unto me (the Goddess) Lakshmi of golden hue,2 who is the destroyer of the sins3 (of her devotees), who is (resplendent) with her garlands of (lotuses of) gold and silver, who is the delight4 (of the universe) and who has plenty of (wealth in the form of) gold, etc.

तां म आवह जातवेदो लक्ष्मीम् अनप-गामिनीम् ।
यस्यां हिरण्यं विन्देयं गाम् अश्वं पुरुषान् अहम् ॥ २ ॥
- O Jatavedah! Bring unto me that Lakshmi5 who will never leave me and by whose grace I may obtain gold and cattle, and horses and servants6.
अश्व-पूर्वां रथ-मध्यां हस्ति-नाद-प्रबोधिनीम् ।
श्रियं देवीम् उपह्वये श्रीर् मा देवी जुषताम् ॥ ३ ॥
- I invoke Goddess7 Sri8 who has the All-Pervading (Vishnu) before her, who resides in the heart of souls, (or on the chest of Narayana) and who wakes up (first) at the call (for help) of the elephants (and other beings in distress).
(Or) I invoke Sri who has the cavalry in front (in her march) and the chariots in the middle and who wakes up (daily) by the cry of the elephants attending on her. May she be benign towards me.

कां सोस्मितां हिरण्य-प्राकाराम् आर्द्रां ज्वलन्तीं तृप्तां तर्पयन्तीम् ।
पद्मे स्थितां पद्म-वर्णां त्वाम् इहोपह्वये श्रियम् ॥ ४ ॥
- I invoke Sri9 who is bliss10 itself, who is sweet-smiling, who resides in a hall of gold11, who is compassionate, or drenched12 (on account of her rising from the Milky Ocean or being bathed by the attending elephants’), who is effulgent, who is pleased (because of Her association with Her consort or by the worship of Her devotees), who pleases (all by granting their desires), and who dwells in the lotus and is lotus-coloured.
चन्द्रां प्रभासां यशसा ज्वलन्तीं श्रियं लोके देव-जुष्टाम् उदाराम् ।
तां पद्म-नेमीं शरणम् अहं प्रपद्ये ऽलक्ष्मीर् मे नश्यतां त्वां वृणे ॥५॥
- I take refuge in Sri who is delightful (to those who take refuge in Her), who has a shining form, who shines with the fame (of protecting those who seek Her), who is worshipped by the Gods (for getting their ends accomplished) or who is loved by Narayana, who is bounteous in Her gifts, and who has the lotus for Her weapon13 (to remove the distress of, and to shower favours
on, Her devotees.) May the Alakshmi14 go away from me, I15 invoke you, O Lakshmi.

आदित्य-वर्णे तपसो ऽधि जातो
वनस्पतिस् तव वृक्षो ऽथ बिल्वः ।
तस्य फलानि तपसा नुदन्तु
माया-अन्तरायाश् च बाह्या अलक्ष्मीः ॥ ६ ॥
- Lakshmi of sun-like lustre!16 The auspicious Bilva tree was generated by your penance17. May the fruits of that tree destroy through (our) penance18 (viz. chanting their names and worshipping them) (our) ignorance19 (or nescience), obstacles20 (to the worship and service of you) and extraneous things (which are not related to you).

उपैतु मां देव-सखः कीर्तिश् च मनुना सह ।
प्रादुर्भूतो ऽस्मि राष्ट्रे ऽस्मिन् कीर्तिम् ऋद्धिं ददातु मे ॥ ७ ॥
- O Goddess!21 May the reputation22 (of being learned) come to me along with gems23. I am born in this world and may you give me fame and plenty.
क्षुत्-पिपासा-मलां ज्येष्ठाम्-अलक्ष्मीं नाशयाम्य् अहम् ।
अभूतिम्-असमृद्धिं च सर्वां निर्णुद मे गृहात् ॥ ८ ॥
- I destroy (by your grace) the Alakshmi, who is impure, who is the elder (of Lakshmi), and who is (the cause of) hunger and thirst. Dispel from my house all lack of wealth and of prosperity.
गन्ध-द्वारां दुर्-आधर्षां नित्य-पुष्टां करीषिणीम् ।
ईश्वरीं सर्व-भूतानां ताम् इहोपह्वये श्रियम् ॥ ९ ॥
- I invoke Sri, to realise whom fragrant things (like sandal-paste, flowers, etc.) are the means[4_92], who is unassailable[5_92] by the inauspicious, who is ever-joyful[6_92] and the possessor of (wealth in the form of) manure (because of the abundance of cattle She has), and who is the Supreme sovereign of all (living) beings.

मनसः कामम् आकूतिं वाचः सत्यम् अशीमहि ।
पशूनां रूपम् अन्नस्य मयि श्रीः श्रयतां यशः ॥ १० ॥
- May we realise all (the) wishes of (our) hearts and (our) aims, the truth of (our) words (in the form of requests), the wealth of cattle and food. May Sri bring me fame (also).
कर्दमेन प्रजा-भूता मयि सम्भव कर्दम ।
श्रियं वासय मे कुले मातरं पद्म-मालिनीम् ॥ ११ ॥
- (O Kardama!) Bring to me Sri, who has been taken as a daughter[1_93] by Kardama (i. e., yourself) and make Her dwell in my family—Her, who is the (Universal) Mother[^2_93] and who is decked with garlands of lotuses.

आपः सृजन्तु स्निग्धानि चिक्लीत वस मे गृहे ।
नि च देवीं मातरं श्रियं वासय मे कुले ॥ १२ ॥
- O Ciklita!24 Let the waters25 (which are the dwelling places of the Lord) generate (for me) viscous things (like ghee and others). Dwell in my house and make the Goddess Sri, the Mother (of the Universe) also live in my abode.
आर्द्रां पुष्करिणीं [[यष्टिं|पुष्टिं]] पिङ्गलां पद्म-मालिनीम् ।
चन्द्रां हिरण्मयीं लक्ष्मीं जातवेदो ममावह ॥ १३ ॥
- O Jatavedah! Bring to me Lakshmi who is compassionate, who resides in the lotus pond26, who is the goal of (all) sacrificial rites27, who is tawny-coloured, who has garlands of lotuses, who delights28 (the Universe), and who has an abundance (of wealth in the form) of gold.

आर्द्रां पुष्करिणीं पुष्टिं सु-वर्णां हेम-मालिनीम् ।
सूर्यां हिरण्मयीं लक्ष्मीं जातवेदो ममावह ॥ १४ ॥
- O Jatavedah! Bring unto me Lakshmi, who is compassionate, who resides in the lotus-pond, who is prosperity (itself), who is of a

golden hue29, who is decked with garlands of gold, who is the (efficient) impeller30² (of the Universe) and who is of golden form.
तां म आवह जातवेदो लक्ष्मीम् अनपगामिनीम् ।
यस्यां हिरण्यं प्रभूतं गावो दास्योऽश्वान्
विन्देयं पुरुषान् अहम् ॥ १५ ॥
- O Jatavedah! Bring to me Lakshmi who will never, abandon me and by whose grace I may get in abundance gold and cattle, servants and horses and (other) men.
