तदाहुर्यस्याग्निहोत्रमधिश्रितममेध्यमापद्येत का तत्र प्रायश्चित्तिरिति ।

(The Penance required when Anything of the Agnihotram is Spilt, or the Spoon is Broken, or the Gârhapatya Fire Extinguished.)
They ask, If anything improper for being offered should fall into the fire offering when placed (over the fire to make it ready), what is the penance for it?

तदाहुर्यस्याग्निहोत्रमधिश्रितममेध्यमापद्येत का तत्र प्रायश्चित्तिरिति ।

सर्वमेवैनत्स्रुच्यभिपर्यासिच्य प्राङुदेत्या ऽऽहवनीये हैतां समिधमभ्यादधात् ।

The Agnihotri then ought to pour all this into a Sruch (sacrificial spoon), go eastwards and place the usual fuel (samidh) into the Āhavanîya fire.
मूलम्
सर्वमेवैनत्स्रुच्यभिपर्यासिच्य प्राङुदेत्या ऽऽहवनीये हैतां समिधमभ्यादधात् ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
अथोत्तरत आहवनीयस्योष्णं भस्म निरूह्य जुहुयान्मनसा वा प्राजापत्यया वर्चा ।

After having taken some hot ashes from the northern part of the Āhavanîya fire, he shall sacrifice it by repeating either in his mind (the usual Agnihotra mantra), or the Prajāpati verse.[3]

In this way (by means of the hot ashes), the offering becomes sacrificed and is not sacrificed.[4]

स यद्येकस्मिन्नुन्नीते यदि द्वयोरेष एव कल्पः ।

(It is of no consequence) whether only one or two turns of the oblation (become spoiled); the penance for it is always performed in the way described.

तच्चेद्व्यपनयितुं शक्नुयान्निःषिच्यैतद्दुष्टमदुष्टमभिपर्यासिच्य तस्य यथोन्नीती स्यात्तथा जुहुयात् ।

Should the Agnihotri be able to remove thus (the unclean things fallen into the offering) by pouring out all that is spoiled, and pour in what is unspoiled, then he ought to sacrifice it just as its turn[5] is.

They ask, If the fire offering when placed over the fire (for being made ready) is spilt or runs over (by boiling), what is then the penance for it?

तदाहुर्यस्याग्निहोत्रमधिश्रितं स्कन्दति वा विष्यन्दते वा का तत्र प्रायश्चित्तिरिति ।

तदद्भिरुपनिनयेच्छान्त्यै शान्तिर्वा आपः ।

He shall touch what fell down with water for appeasing (arresting the evil consequences); for water serves for this purpose.

अथैनद्दक्षिणेन पाणिना ऽभिमृश्य जपति दिवं तृतीयं देवान्यज्ञो ऽगात्ततो मा द्रविणमाष्ट ।

Then moving with his right hand over what fell out, he mutters the mantra, “May a third go to heaven to the gods as a sacrifice; might I obtain thence wealth!”

अथैनद्दक्षिणेन पाणिना ऽभिमृश्य जपति दिवं तृतीयं देवान्यज्ञो ऽगात्ततो मा द्रविणमाष्ट ।

अन्तरिक्षं तृतीयं पितॄन्यज्ञो ऽगात्ततो मा द्रविणमाष्ट ।

“May a third go to the air, to the Pitaras, as a sacrifice; might I obtain thence wealth!”

Then he mutters the Viṣṇu-Varuṇa verse, yayor ojasā skabhitā rajāṁsi (A. V. 7, 25, 1).[6]

For Viṣṇu watches over what is performed badly in the sacrifice, and Varuṇa over what is performed well.

तयोरुभयोरेव शान्त्यै सा तत्र प्रायश्चित्तिः ।

To appease both of them, this penance (is appropriate). This is the penance.

They ask, When the fire offering, after having been made ready, at the time when the Adhvaryu takes it eastward to the Āhavanîya fire (to sacrifice it), runs over or is spilt altogether, what is the penance for it?

तदाहुर्यस्याग्निहोत्रमधिश्रितं प्राङुदायन्स्खलते वा ऽपि वा भ्रंशते का तत्र प्रायश्चित्तिरिति ।

स यद्युपनिवर्तयेत्स्वर्गाल्लोकाद्यजमानमावर्तयेत् ।

(The Adhvaryu is not allowed to turn back his face). If he would turn his face backward, then he would turn the sacrificer from heaven.

स यद्युपनिवर्तयेत्स्वर्गाल्लोकाद्यजमानमावर्तयेत् ।

अत्रैवास्मा उपविष्टायैतमग्निहोत्रपरीशेषमाहरेयुस्तस्य यथोन्नीती स्यात्तथा जुहुयात्सा तत्र प्रायश्चित्तिः ।

Therefore (some other men) must gather up for him when he is seated (having turned the face eastward) the remainder of the offering, which he then sacrifices just in its turn.[7] This is the penance for it.

They ask, If the sacrificial spoon (sruch) should be broken, what is the penance for it?

अन्यां स्रुचमाहृत्य जुहुयात् ।

He ought to take another Sruch and sacrifice with it.

अन्यां स्रुचमाहृत्य जुहुयात् ।

अथैनां स्रुचं भिन्नामाहवनीये ऽभ्यादध्यात्प्राग्दण्डां प्रत्यक्पुष्कराम् ।

Then he shall throw the broken Sruch into the Āhavanîya fire, the stick being in the front, and its cavity behind.

They ask, If the fire in the Āhavanîya only is burning, but that in the Gārhapatya is extinguished, what is the penance for it?

तदाहुर्यस्या ऽऽहवनीये हाग्निर्विद्येताथ गार्हपत्य उपशाम्येत्का तत्र प्रायश्चित्तिरिति ।

स यदि प्राञ्चमुद्धरेत्प्रा ऽऽयतनाच्च्यवेत ।

If he should take it (the fire) from the eastern side, he would move away from its proper seat.

स यदि प्राञ्चमुद्धरेत्प्रा ऽऽयतनाच्च्यवेत ।

यत्प्रत्यञ्चमसुरवद्यज्ञं तन्वीत ।

Should he take it from the western side, he would perform a sacrifice after the manner of the Asuras.

यन्मन्थेद्भ्रातृव्यं यजमानस्य जनयेत् ।

Should he produce it by rubbing, he would produce an enemy for the sacrificer.

यन्मन्थेद्भ्रातृव्यं यजमानस्य जनयेत् ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
यदनुगमयेत्प्राणो यजमानं जह्यात् ।
Haug
Should he cause it (the Gārhapatya) to go out (altogether), the vital air would leave the sacrificer.

यदनुगमयेत्प्राणो यजमानं जह्यात् ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
सर्वमेवैनं सह भस्मानं समोप्य गार्हपत्यायतने निधायाथ प्राञ्चमाहवनीयमुद्धरेत् ।

Having gathered it all, together with the ashes, and placed it on the Gārhapatya hearth, he should then take the Āhavanîya fire from the eastern side.
