देवनीथं शंसति ।

(Story of the Sacrifices of the Ādityas and Aṅgirasas for reaching Heaven.)

He repeats the *Devānītham.[30]

देवनीथं शंसति ।

आदित्याश्च ह वा अङ्गिरसश्च स्वर्गे लोके ऽस्पर्धन्त वयम्पूर्व एष्यामो वयमिति ।

(About this, the following story is reported.) The Āditiyas and Aṅgirasas were contending with one another as to who should gain first the heavenly world.

आदित्याश्च ह वा अङ्गिरसश्च स्वर्गे लोके ऽस्पर्धन्त वयम्पूर्व एष्यामो वयमिति ।

ते हाङ्गिरसः पूर्वे श्वः सुत्यां स्वर्गस्य लोकस्य ददृशुः ।

The Aṅgirasas had seen (in their mind) that, by dint of the Soma sacrifice they were about to bring on the next day, they would be raised to heaven first.

ते हाङ्गिरसः पूर्वे श्वः सुत्यां स्वर्गस्य लोकस्य ददृशुः ।

ते ऽग्निम्प्रजिघ्युरङ्गिरसां वा एकोऽग्निः परेह्यादित्येभ्यः श्वःसुत्यां स्वर्गस्य लोकस्य प्रब्रूहीति ।

They therefore despatched one from among themselves, Agni by name, instructing him thus : “Go to the Ādityas and announce to them that we shall, by dint of our to-morrow’s Soma sacrifice, go to heaven.”

ते ऽग्निम्प्रजिघ्युरङ्गिरसां वा एकोऽग्निः परेह्यादित्येभ्यः श्वःसुत्यां स्वर्गस्य लोकस्य प्रब्रूहीति ।

ते हादित्या अग्निमेव दृष्ट्वा सद्यःसुत्यां स्वर्गस्य लोकस्य ददृशुः ।

As soon as the Ādityas got sight of Agni, they at once saw (in their minds) the Soma sacrifice by which they would reach heaven.

ते हादित्या अग्निमेव दृष्ट्वा सद्यःसुत्यां स्वर्गस्य लोकस्य ददृशुः ।

तानेत्याब्रवीच्छ्वःसुत्यां वः स्वर्गस्य लोकस्य प्रब्रूम इति ।

Having come near them, Agni said, “We inform you of our bringing to-morrow that Soma sacrifice, by means of which we shall reach heaven.”

तानेत्याब्रवीच्छ्वःसुत्यां वः स्वर्गस्य लोकस्य प्रब्रूम इति ।

ते होचुरथ वयं तुभ्यं सद्यःसुत्यां स्वर्गस्य लोकस्य प्रब्रूमस्त्वयैव वयं होत्रा स्वर्गं लोकमेष्याम इति ।

They answered, “And we announce to you that we are just now contemplating to bring that Soma sacrifice, by means of which we shall reach heaven; but thou (Agni) must serve as our Hotar, then we shall go to heaven.”

ते होचुरथ वयं तुभ्यं सद्यःसुत्यां स्वर्गस्य लोकस्य प्रब्रूमस्त्वयैव वयं होत्रा स्वर्गं लोकमेष्याम इति ।

स तथेत्युक्त्वा प्रत्युक्तः पुनराजगाम ।

He said, “Yes,” (and went back to the Aṅgiras). After having told (the Aṅgiras the message of the Ādityas) and received their reply, he went back to the Ādityas).

स तथेत्युक्त्वा प्रत्युक्तः पुनराजगाम ।

ते होचुः प्रावोचाः३ इति ।

They asked him, “Hast thou told our message?”

ते होचुः प्रावोचाः३ इति ।

प्रावोचमिति होवाचाथो मे प्रतिप्रावोचन्निति ।

He said, “Yes, I have told it (to the Aṅgiras); and they answered,

प्रावोचमिति होवाचाथो मे प्रतिप्रावोचन्निति ।

नो हि न प्रत्यज्ञास्थाः३ इति ।

and asked, ‘Did’st thou not promise us thy assistance (as a Hotar),’

नो हि न प्रत्यज्ञास्थाः३ इति ।

प्रति वा अज्ञासमिति होवाच ।

and I said, ‘Yes, I have promised.’

प्रति वा अज्ञासमिति होवाच ।

यशसा वा एषोऽभ्यैति य आर्त्विज्येन तं यः प्रतिरुन्धेद्यशः स प्रतिरुन्धेत्तस्मान्न प्रत्यरौत्सीति ।

(But I could not decline the offer of the Ādityas). For he who engages in performing the duty of a sacrificial priest, obtains fame; and any one Who prevents the sacrifice from being performed, excludes himself from his fame. Therefore I did not prevent (by declining the offer).”

यशसा वा एषोऽभ्यैति य आर्त्विज्येन तं यः प्रतिरुन्धेद्यशः स प्रतिरुन्धेत्तस्मान्न प्रत्यरौत्सीति ।

यदि त्वस्मादपोज्जिगांसेद्यज्ञेनास्मादपोदियात्यदि यदि त्वयाज्यः स्वयमपोदितं तस्मात् ।

If one wishes to decline serving as a sacrificial priest, then this refusal is only justified on account of oneself being engaged in a sacrifice, or because of being legally prohibited to perform the sacrificial duties.

यदि त्वस्मादपोज्जिगांसेद्यज्ञेनास्मादपोदियात्यदि यदि त्वयाज्यः स्वयमपोदितं तस्मात् ।
