उद्यन्नु खलु वा आदित्य आहवनीयेन रश्मीन्संदधाति ।

In rising, the sun joins his rays to the Ahavanīya fire.

उद्यन्नु खलु वा आदित्य आहवनीयेन रश्मीन्संदधाति ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
स यो ऽनुदिते जुहोति यथा कुमाराय वा वत्साय वाजाताय स्तनं प्रतिदध्यात्तादृक्तत् ।

Who, therefore, sacrifices before sunrise, is like a female giving her breast to an unborn child, or a cow giving her udder to an unborn calf.

स यो ऽनुदिते जुहोति यथा कुमाराय वा वत्साय वा जाताय स्तनं प्रतिदध्यात्तादृक्तत् ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
अथ य उदिते जुहोति यथा कुमाराय वा वत्साय वा जाताय स्तनं प्रतिदध्यात्तादृक्तत् ।

But he who sacrifices after sunrise is like a female giving her breast to a child which is born, or like a cow giving her udder to a calf which is born.

अथ य उदिते जुहोति यथा कुमाराय वा वत्साय वा जाताय स्तनं प्रतिदध्यात्तादृक्तत् ।

तमस्मै प्रतिधीयमानमुभयोर्लोकयोरन्नाद्यमनु प्रतिधीयते ऽस्माच्च लोकादमुष्माच्चोभाभ्याम् ।

The Agnihotram being thus offered to him (Sūrya), he (Sūrya) gives to the Agnihotrî in return, food in both worlds, in this one and that one.

तमस्मै प्रतिधीयमानमुभयोर्लोकयोरन्नाद्यमनु प्रतिधीयतेऽस्माच्च लोकादमुष्माच्चोभाभ्याम् ।

स यो ऽनुदिते जुहोति यथा पुरुषाय वा हस्तिने वा प्रयते हस्त आदध्यात्तादृक्तत् ।

He who brings the Agnihotram before sunrise, is like such an one who throws food before a man or an elephant, who do not stretch forth their hands (not caring for it).

He who has this knowledge, and sacrifices after sunrise, lifts up with this hand (Āditya’s hand) his sacrifice, and puts it down in the heaven-world.

तमेष एतेनैव हस्तेनोर्ध्वं हृत्वा स्वर्गे लोक आदधाति य एवं विद्वानुदिते जुहोति ।

तस्मादुदिते होतव्यम् ।

Therefore the sacrifice is to be brought after sunrise.

When rising, the sun brings all beings into motion (praṇayati).

तस्मादेनं प्राण इत्याक्षते ।

Therefore he is called prāṇa (breath).

प्राणे हास्य सम्प्रति हुतं भवति य एवं विद्वानुदिते जुहोति ।

The offerings of him who, knowing this, sacrifices after sunrise, are well stored up in this prāṇa (Āditya).

तस्मादुदिते होतव्यम् ।

Therefore it is to be sacrificed after sunrise.

एष ह वै सत्यं वदन्सत्ये जुहोति यो ऽस्तमिते सायं जुहोत्युदिते प्रातः ।

That man is speaking the truth, who in the evening after sunset, and in the morning after sunrise, brings his offering.

एष ह वै सत्यं वदन्सत्ये जुहोति यो ऽस्तमिते सायं जुहोत्युदिते प्रातः ।

भूर्भुवः स्वरो३मग्निर्ज्योतिर्ज्योतिरग्निरिति सायं जुहोति ।

He commences the evening sacrifice by the words, “Bhûr, Bhuvaḥ, Svar, Om! Agni is Light, Light is Agni;”

and the morning sacrifice by “Bhûr, Bhuvaḥ, Svar, Om! Sun is Light, Light is Sun.”

The truth-speaking man offers thus in truth, when he brings his sacrifice after sunrise.

This is well expressed in a sacrificial stanza which is chanted. “Those who sacrifice before sunrise tell every morning an untruth; for, if celebrating the Agnihotram at night which ought to be celebrated at day, they say, Sun is Light, but then they have no light (for the sun has not risen).”
