If the cow of an Agnihotrî[2] which is joined to her calf, sits down during the time of being milked, what is the penance for it?

यस्याग्निहोत्र्युपावसृष्टा दुह्यमानोपविशेत्का तत्र प्रायश्चित्तिरिति ।

तामभिमन्त्रयेत यस्माद्भीषा निषीदसि ततो नो अभयं कृधि पशून्नः सर्वान्गोपाय नमो रुद्राय भीह्ळुष इति ।

He shall repeat over it this mantra. “Why dost thou sit down out of fear? From this grant us safety! Protect all our cattle! Praise to Rudra the giver!”

तामभिमन्त्रयेत यस्माद्भीषा निषीदसि ततो नो अभयं कृधि पशून्नः सर्वान्गोपाय नमो रुद्राय भीह्ळुष इति ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
तामुत्थापयेत् उदस्थाद्देव्यदितिरायुर्यज्ञपतावधात् इन्द्राय कृण्वती भागं मित्राय वरुणय चेति ।

(By repeating the following mantra) he should raise her up. “The divine Aditi (cow) rose, and put long life in the sacrifice, she who provides Indra, Mitra and Varuṇa with their (respective) shares (in the sacrifice).”

तामुत्थापयेत् उदस्थाद्देव्यदितिरायुर्यज्ञपतावधात् इन्द्राय कृण्वती भागं मित्राय वरुणय चेति ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
अथास्या उदपात्रमूधसि च मुखे चोपगृह्णीयादथैनां ब्राह्मणाय दद्यात् ।

Or he may hold on her udder and mouth a vessel filled with water and give her (the cow) then to a Brahman.

If the cow of an Agnihotrî, which is joined to her calf, cries during the time of being milked, how is this to be atoned for?

यस्याग्निहोत्र्युपावसृष्टा दुह्यमाना वाश्येत का तत्र प्रायश्चित्तिरिति ।

अशनायां ह वा एष यजमानस्य प्रतिख्याय वाश्यते ।

If she cries out of hunger, to indicate to the sacrificer what she is in need of,

अशनायां ह वा एष यजमानस्य प्रतिख्याय वाश्यते ।

तामन्नमप्यादयेच्छान्त्यै शान्तिर्वा अन्नम् ।

then he shall give her more food in order to appease her. For food is appeasing.

सूयवसाद्भगवती हि भूया इति ।

यस्याग्निहोत्र्युपावसृष्टा दुह्यमाना स्पन्देत का तत्र प्रायश्चित्तिरिति ।

सा यत्तत्र स्कन्दयेत्तदभिमृश्य जपेत् यदद्य दुग्धं पृथिवीमसृप्त यदोषधीरत्यसृपद्यदापः पयो गृहेषु पयो अघ्न्यायां पयो वत्सेषु पयो अस्तु तन्मायीति ।

Should she in moving spill (some milk) then he shall stroke her, and whisper (the following words), “What of the milk might have fallen to the ground to-day, what might have gone to the herbs, what to the waters,- may this milk be in my houses, (my) cow, (my) calves, and in me.”

सा यत्तत्र स्कन्दयेत्तदभिमृश्य जपेत् यदद्य दुग्धं पृथिवीमसृप्त यदोषधीरत्यसृपद्यदापः पयो गृहेषु पयो अघ्न्यायां पयो वत्सेषु पयो अस्तु तन्मायीति ।

तत्र यत्परिशिष्टं स्यात्तेन जुहुयाद्यदलं होमाय स्यात् ।

He shall then bring a burnt offering with what has remained, if it be sufficient for making the burnt offering (Homa).

तत्र यत्परिशिष्टं स्यात्तेन जुहुयाद्यदलं होमाय स्यात् ।

यद्यु वै सर्वं सिक्तं स्यादथान्यामाहूय तां दुग्ध्वा तेन जुहुयात् ।

Should all in the vessel have been spilt (by the moving of the cow) then he shall call another cow, milk her and bring the burnt offering with that milk, and sacrifice it.

यद्यु वै सर्वं सिक्तं स्यादथान्यामाहूय तां दुग्ध्वा तेन जुहुयात् ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
आ त्वेव श्रद्धायै होतव्यम् ।

It is to be offered alone in faith.[3]

[3]The meaning of the sentence: आत्वेव श्रद्धायै होतव्यं is: this (substitute) is to be offered (completely) even including the śraddhâ. This is the formula: अहं श्रद्धा जुहोमि (i.e.) “I offer (this) in faith (as a believing one).”
