नाभानेदिष्ठं शंसति ।

(The Story of Nābhānediṣṭha, the son of Manu.)

He recites the Nābhānediṣṭham.

नाभानेदिष्ठं शंसति ।

नाभानेदिष्ठं वै मानवं ब्रह्मचर्यं वसन्तं भ्रातरो निरभजन् ।

Nābhānediṣṭha was a son of Manu, who was given to the sacred study (after his investiture in the house of his Guru);[17] his brothers deprived him of his share in the paternal property.

[17]This is the meaning of the term brahmacharyam vasantam.

नाभानेदिष्ठं वै मानवं ब्रह्मचर्यं वसन्तं भ्रातरो निरभजन् ।

सो ऽब्रवीदेत्य किं मह्यमभाक्तेति ।

He went (to them) and said, “What portion is left to me?”

सो ऽब्रवीदेत्य किं मह्यमभाक्तेति ।

एतमेव निष्ठावमववदितारमित्यब्रुवन् ।

They answered, “Go to the adjudicator[18] and arbitrator.”

[18]Niṣṭâva.

एतमेव निष्ठावमववदितारमित्यब्रुवन् ।

तस्माद्धाप्येतर्हि पितरं पुत्रा निष्ठावो ऽववदितेत्येवा ऽऽचक्षते ।

By “adjudicator and arbitrator” they meant their father.

तस्माद्धाप्येतर्हि पितरं पुत्रा निष्ठावो ऽववदितेत्येवा ऽऽचक्षते ।

स पितरमेत्याब्रवीत्त्वां ह वाव मह्यं तताभाक्षुरिति ।

He went to his father and said, “They have divided the property including my share among themselves.”

स पितरमेत्याब्रवीत्त्वां ह वाव मह्यं तताभाक्षुरिति ।

तं पिता ऽब्रवीन्मा पुत्रक तदादृथा अङ्गिरसो वा इमे स्वर्गाय लोकाय सत्रमासते ।

The father answered, “My dear son, do not mind that. There are the Angirasaḥ just engaged in holding their sacrificial session (Sattra) for going to heaven.

तं पिता ऽब्रवीन्मा पुत्रक तदादृथा अङ्गिरसो वा इमे स्वर्गाय लोकाय सत्रमासते ।

ते षष्ठं षष्ठमेवाहरागत्य मुह्यन्ति ।

As often as they commence the ceremonies of the sixth day, they are puzzled (frustrated in their design).

ते षष्ठं षष्ठमेवाहरागत्य मुह्यन्ति ।

तानेते सूक्ते षष्ठे ऽहनि शंसय तेषां यत्सहस्रं सत्रपरिवेषणं तत्ते स्वर्यन्तो दास्यन्तीति ।

Let them recite on the sixth day those two hymns (abovementioned, Rigveda 10, 61-62), then they will give thee the sum of a thousand which is contributed by all the sacrificers who participate in the sacrificial session,[19] when they go to heaven.”

[19]This is the translation of sattra-pariveṣaṇam.

तानेते सूक्ते षष्ठे ऽहनि शंसय तेषां यत्सहस्रं सत्रपरिवेषणं तत्ते स्वर्यन्तो दास्यन्तीति ।

तथेति तानुपैत् ।

He said, “Well, let it be so.” He then went to them,

तथेति तानुपैत् ।

प्रतिगृभ्णीत मानवं सुमेधस इति तमब्रुवन् ।

saying, “Receive me, the son of Manu, among you, O ye wise!”

प्रतिगृभ्णीत मानवं सुमेधस इति तमब्रुवन् ।

किंकामो वदसीतीदमेव वः षष्ठमहः प्रज्ञापयानीत्यब्रवीदथ यद्व एतत्सहस्रं सत्रपरिवेषणं तन्मे स्वर्यन्तो दत्तेति ।

They said, “What dost thou wish, that thou speakest thus ?” He answered, “I will show you how to perform the sixth day, then give me the reward for the sacrificial session of a thousand (cows or other valuables), when you go up to heaven.”

किंकामो वदसीतीदमेव वः षष्ठमहः प्रज्ञापयानीत्यब्रवीदथ यद्व एतत्सहस्रं सत्रपरिवेषणं तन्मे स्वर्यन्तो दत्तेति ।

तथेति तानेते सूक्ते षष्ठे ऽहन्यशंसयत् ।

They said, “Well, let it be so.” He made them recite on the sixth day those two hymns;

तथेति तानेते सूक्ते षष्ठे ऽहन्यशंसयत् ।

ततो वै ते प्र यज्ञमजानन्प्र स्वर्गं लोकम् ।

then they became aware of the Yajña (the sacrifice regarded as a person, leading to heaven), and of the heaven-world.

ततो वै ते प्र यज्ञमजानन्प्र स्वर्गं लोकम् ।

तद्यदेते सूक्ते षष्ठे ऽहनि शंसति यज्ञस्य प्रज्ञात्यै स्वर्गस्य लोकस्यानुख्यात्यै ।

Therefore the Hotar recites those two hymns on the sixth day, in order that the sacrificer might become aware of the sacrifice, and to have subsequently pointed out the heaven-world.

तद्यदेते सूक्ते षष्ठे ऽहनि शंसति यज्ञस्य प्रज्ञात्यै स्वर्गस्य लोकस्यानुख्यात्यै ।

तं स्वर्यन्तो ऽब्रुवन्नेतत्ते ब्राह्मण सहस्रमिति ।

When they were going up, they said, “This thousand, O Brāhmaṇa, belongs to thee.”

तं स्वर्यन्तो ऽब्रुवन्नेतत्ते ब्राह्मण सहस्रमिति ।

तदेनं समाकुर्वाणं पुरुषः कृष्णशवास्युत्तरत उपोत्थायाब्रवीन्मम वा इदं मम वै वास्तुहमिति ।

When he was putting all together (the thousand pieces), a man clothed in a blackish (dirty) dress[20] alighted and approaching him, said, “This is mine ; I have left it here.”

[20]Sây, says that according to another Śâkhâ, this man is Rudra, the master of cattle.

तदेनं समाकुर्वाणं पुरुषः कृष्णशवास्युत्तरत उपोत्थायाब्रवीन्मम वा इदं मम वै वास्तुहमिति ।

सो ऽब्रवीन्मह्यं वा इदमदुरिति ।

He answered, “The Angirasaḥ have given it to me.”

सो ऽब्रवीन्मह्यं वा इदमदुरिति ।

तमब्रवीत्तद्वै नौ तवैव पितरि प्रश्न इति ।

The man said “Then it belongs to either of us, thy father may decide.”

तमब्रवीत्तद्वै नौ तवैव पितरि प्रश्न इति ।

स पितरमैत् ।

He went to his father.

स पितरमैत् ।

तं पिता ऽब्रवीन्ननु ते पुत्रकादू३रिति ।

He asked him, “Have they not, my dear son, given you (the reward) ?”

तं पिता ऽब्रवीन्ननु ते पुत्रकादू३रिति ।

अदुरेव म इत्यब्रवीत्तत्तु मे पुरुषः कृष्णशवास्युत्तरत उपोदतिष्ठन्मम वा इदं मम वै वास्तुहमित्यादितेति ।

He said, “They have given me; but a man clothed in a blackish dress alighted and approaching me said, ‘This is mine, I have left it here.’ So saying, he took it.”

अदुरेव म इत्यब्रवीत्तत्तु मे पुरुषः कृष्णशवास्युत्तरत उपोदतिष्ठन्मम वा इदं मम वै वास्तुहमित्यादितेति ।

तं पिता ऽब्रवीत्तस्यैव पुत्रक तत्तत्तु स तुभ्यं दास्यतीति ।

The father said, “It is his, my dear son ! but he will give it to thee.”

तं पिता ऽब्रवीत्तस्यैव पुत्रक तत्तत्तु स तुभ्यं दास्यतीति ।

स पुनरेत्याब्रवीत्तव ह वाव किल भगव इदमिति मे पिता ऽऽहेति ।

He went back to him, and said, “Sir, this belongs only to you; so says my father.”

स पुनरेत्याब्रवीत्तव ह वाव किल भगव इदमिति मे पिता ऽऽहेति ।

सो ऽब्रवीत्तदहं तुभ्यमेव ददामि य एव सत्यमवादीरिति ।

He said, “I give it to thee, because you have spoken the truth, (i.e. acknowledged that it is my property).”

सो ऽब्रवीत्तदहं तुभ्यमेव ददामि य एव सत्यमवादीरिति ।

तस्मादेवं विदुषा सत्यमेव वदितव्यम् ।

Therefore a man who is learned must speak only the truth.

तस्मादेवं विदुषा सत्यमेव वदितव्यम् ।

स एष सहस्रसनिर्मन्त्रो यन्नाभानेदिष्ठः ।

This is the mantra of “the thousand gifts,” the Nābhānediṣṭha hymn.

स एष सहस्रसनिर्मन्त्रो यन्नाभानेदिष्ठः ।

उपैनं सहस्रं नमति ।

Upon that man who has this knowledge, a thousand gifts shower,

उपैनं सहस्रं नमति ।

प्र षष्ठेनाह्ना स्वर्गं लोकं जानाति य एवं वेद ।

and he gets a glimpse of heaven by means of the sixth day.
