विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
तासां वै देवतानामाजिं धावन्तीनामभिसृष्टानामग्निर्मुखं प्रथमः प्रत्यपद्यत ।

(The Race Run by the Gods for Obtaining the Aśvina Śastra as a Prize.)
Among (all) these deities who were running the race, Agni was with his mouth (the flames) in advance (of all others) after they had started.
मूलम्
तासां वै देवतानामाजिं धावन्तीनामभिसृष्टानामग्निर्मुखं प्रथमः प्रत्यपद्यत ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
तमश्विनावन्वागच्छतां तमब्रूतामपोदिह्यावां वा इदं जेष्याव इति ।

The Aśvins (closely) followed him, and said to him, “Let us both be winners of this race.”
मूलम्
तमश्विनावन्वागच्छतां तमब्रूतामपोदिह्यावां वा इदं जेष्याव इति ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
स तथेत्यब्रवीत्तस्य वै ममेहाप्यस्त्विति ।

Agni consented, under the condition that he should also have a share in it (the Aśvina Śāstra).
मूलम्
स तथेत्यब्रवीत्तस्य वै ममेहाप्यस्त्विति ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
तथेति तस्मा अप्यत्राकुरुतां तस्मादाग्नेयमाश्विने शस्यते ।

They consented, and made room also for him in this (Aśvina Śāstra). This is the reason that there is in the Aśvina Śāstra a series of verses addressed to Agni.

तथेति तस्मा अप्यत्राकुरुतां तस्मादाग्नेयमाश्विने शस्यते ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
ता उषसमन्वागच्छतां तामब्रूतामपोदिह्यावां वा इदं जेष्याव इति ।

The Aśvins (closely) followed Uṣâs. They said to her, “Go aside, that we both may be winners of the race.”

ता उषसमन्वागच्छतां तामब्रूतामपोदिह्यावां वा इदं जेष्याव इति ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
सा तथेत्यब्रवीत्तस्यै वै ममेहाप्यस्त्विति ।

They consented, and made room also for her in it. This is the reason that in the Aśvina Śāstra a series of verses is addressed to Uṣās.

ताविन्द्रमन्वागच्छतां तमब्रूतामावां वा इदं मघवञ्जेष्याव इति ।

The Aśvins (closely) followed Indra. They said to him, “Maghavan, we both wish to be winners of this race.”

ताविन्द्रमन्वागच्छतां तमब्रूतामावां वा इदं मघवञ्जेष्याव इति ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
न ह तं दधृषतुरपोदिहीति वक्तुम् ।

They did not dare to say to him, “Go aside.”

स तथेत्यब्रवीत्तस्य वै ममेहाप्यस्त्विति ।

Thus the Aśvins were winners of the race, and obtained (the prize).

यदश्विना उदजयतामश्विनावाश्नुवातां तस्मादेतदाश्विनमित्याचक्षते ।

This is the reason that it (the prize) is called Aśvinam (i. e., the Aśvina Śāstra).

अश्नुते यद्यत्कामयते य एवं वेद ।

He who has such a knowledge obtains what he may wish for.

तदाहुर्यच्छस्यत आग्नेयं शस्यत उषस्यं शस्यत ऐन्द्रमथ कस्मादेतदाश्विनमित्याचक्षत इति ।

They ask, Why is this (Śāstra) called Aśvinam, notwithstanding there being in it verses addressed to Agni, Uṣâs, and Indra?

तदाहुर्यच्छस्यत आग्नेयं शस्यत उषस्यं शस्यत ऐन्द्रमथ कस्मादेतदाश्विनमित्याचक्षत इति ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
अश्विनौ हि तदुदजयतामश्विनावाश्नुवातां यदश्विना उदजयतामश्विनावाश्नुवातां तस्मादेतदाश्विनमित्याचक्षते ।

(The answer is) the Aśvins were the winners of this race, they obtained it (the prize). This is the reason that it is called the Aśvina Śāstra.

अश्विनौ हि तदुदजयतामश्विनावाश्नुवातां यदश्विना उदजयतामश्विनावाश्नुवातां तस्मादेतदाश्विनमित्याचक्षते ।
