विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
सा यद्दक्षिणेन पदा समगृभ्णात्तत्प्रातःसवनमभवत् ।

(Origin of the Three Libations. They all are of equal strength.)
What Gāyatrī had seized with her right foot, that became the morning libation;
मूलम्
सा यद्दक्षिणेन पदा समगृभ्णात्तत्प्रातःसवनमभवत् ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
तद्गायत्री स्वमायतनमकुरुत ।

she made it her own place.

तद्गायत्री स्वमायतनमकुरुत ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
तस्मात्तत्समृद्धतमं मन्यन्ते सर्वेषां सवनानाम् ।

Thence they think the morning libation to be the most auspicious (of all).

तस्मात्तत्समृद्धतमं मन्यन्ते सर्वेषां सवनानाम् ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
अग्रियो मुख्यो भवति श्रेष्ठतामश्नुते य एवं वेद ।

He who has such a knowledge, becomes the first and most prominent (among his people) and attains to the leadership.
मूलम्
अग्रियो मुख्यो भवति श्रेष्ठतामश्नुते य एवं वेद ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
अथ यत्सव्येन पदा समगृभ्णात्तन्माध्यंदिनं सवनमभवत् ।

What she had seized with her left foot, became the midday libation.

अथ यत्सव्येन पदा समगृभ्णात्तन्माध्यंदिनं सवनमभवत् ।

तद्विस्रंसत ।

This (portion) slipped down,

तद्विस्रस्तं नान्वाप्नोत्पूर्वं सवनम् ।
Haug
and after having slipped down, did not attain to the same (strength) as the first libation (held with the right foot).
मूलम्
तद्विस्रस्तं नान्वाप्नोत्पूर्वं सवनम् ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
ते देवाः प्राजिज्ञासन्त ।
Haug
The gods got aware of it, and wished (that this portion should not be lost).
मूलम्
ते देवाः प्राजिज्ञासन्त ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
तस्मिंस्त्रिष्टुभं छन्दसामदधुरिन्द्रं देवतानाम् ।
Haug
They put (therefore) in it, of the metres, the Triṣṭubh, and of the deities Indra.

तस्मिंस्त्रिष्टुभं छन्दसामदधुरिन्द्रं देवतानाम् ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
तेन तत्समावद्वीर्यमभवत्पूर्वेण सवनेन ।

Therefore it (the midday libation) became endowed with the same strength as the first libation.

तेन तत्समावद्वीर्यमभवत्पूर्वेण सवनेन ।

उभाभ्यां सवनाभ्यां समावद्वीर्याभ्यां समावज्जामीभ्यां राध्नोति य एवं वेद ।

He who has such a knowledge, prospers through both the libations which are of equal strength, and of the same quality.

उभाभ्यां सवनाभ्यां समावद्वीर्याभ्यां समावज्जामीभ्यां राध्नोति य एवं वेद ।

अथ यन्मुखेन समगृभ्णात्तत्तृतीयसवनमभवत् ।

What Gāyatrī had seized with her bill, became the evening libation.

अथ यन्मुखेन समगृभ्णात्तत्तृतीयसवनमभवत् ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
तस्य पतन्ती रसमधयत् ।

When flying down, she sucked in the juice of this (portion of Soma, held in her bill),

तस्य पतन्ती रसमधयत् ।

तद्धीतरसं नान्वाप्नोत्पूर्वे सवने ।
Haug
and after its juice had gone, it did not equal (in strength) the two first libations.

तद्धीतरसं नान्वाप्नोत्पूर्वे सवने ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
ते देवाः प्राजिज्ञासन्त ।

The gods got aware of that and wished (that the juice of this portion should be kept).

ते देवाः प्राजिज्ञासन्त ।

तत्पशुष्वपश्यन् ।
Haug
They discovered it (the remedy) in cattle.

तत्पशुष्वपश्यन् ।

तद्यदाशिरमवनयन्त्याज्येन पशुना चरन्ति तेन तत्समावद्वीर्यमभवत्पूर्वाभ्यां सवनाभ्याम् ।
Haug
That is the reason that the priests pour sour milk (in the Soma at the evening libation), and bring oblations of melted butter and of flesh (things coming from the cattle). In this way, the evening libation obtained equal strength with the two first libations.
मूलम्
तद्यदाशिरमवनयन्त्याज्येन पशुना चरन्ति तेन तत्समावद्वीर्यमभवत्पूर्वाभ्यां सवनाभ्याम् ।
विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः
सर्वैः सवनैः समावद्वीर्यैः समावज्जामिभी राध्नोति य एवं वेद ।

He who has such a knowledge, prospers through all the libations which are of equal strength and of the same quality.
