विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः

प्राणा वै द्विदेवत्याः पशव इळा ।

(The Hotar Eats the Purodâśa and Drinks from the Grahas.)

The Soma jars belonging to two deities, are the vital airs, and cattle is food (iḷâ).

मूलम्

प्राणा वै द्विदेवत्याः पशव इळा ।

द्विदेवत्यान्भक्षयित्वेळामुपह्वयते ।

(Thence) after having drunk from the Soma jars belonging to two deities, he calls Iḷâ (food).[14]

[14]The term used for “drinking” is bhakṣayati, which is also the common word for eating. That bhakṣ must have been used already in very ancient times for “drinking” the Soma juice, is shown in a passage in the Homa Yasht of the Zend-Avesta (see Yaṣna 10, 13.) yase te bâdha huoma zâirê gavâ iristahê bakṣaiti, i.e., who enjoys thee, O Homa, (Soma) when being dead (by bruising and squeezing) in the yellow milk. (The Homa juice of the Parsis is of yellow colour, and actually mixed with a little fresh milk).

द्विदेवत्यान्भक्षयित्वेळामुपह्वयते ।

विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः

पशवो वा इळा पशूनेव तदुपह्वयते पशून्यजमाने दधाति ।

Haug

Iḷâ is cattle. He thus calls cattle, and (consequently) provides the sacrificer with cattle.

पशवो वा इळा पशूनेव तदुपह्वयते पशून्यजमाने दधाति ।

तदाहुरवान्तरेळाम्पूर्वाम्प्राश्नीयाद्धोतृचमसम्भक्षयेदिति ।

They ask, Should the Hotar first eat the food (remainder of the Puroḍâśa offering previous to the Soma offering) which he has in his hand, or should he drink[15] first from his Soma cup (chamasa)?

तदाहुरवान्तरेळाम्पूर्वाम्प्राश्नीयाद्धोतृचमसम्भक्षयेदिति ।

विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः

अवान्तरेळामेव पूर्वाम्प्राश्नीयादथ होतृचमसम्भक्षयेत् ।

(The answer is) he should first eat the food which he has in his hand, then he may drink Soma from his cup.

मूलम्

अवान्तरेळामेव पूर्वाम्प्राश्नीयादथ होतृचमसम्भक्षयेत् ।

विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः

यद्वाव द्विदेवत्यान्पूर्वान्भक्षयति तेनास्य सोमपीथः पूर्वो भक्षितो भवति ।

In consequence of the circumstance that he first drinks from the Soma jars (grahas) belonging to two deities, the Soma draught is first (before he takes any other food) enjoyed by him.

यद्वाव द्विदेवत्यान्पूर्वान्भक्षयति तेनास्य सोमपीथः पूर्वो भक्षितो भवति ।

विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः

तस्मादवन्तरेळमेव पूर्वाम्प्राश्नीयादथ होतृचमसम्भक्षयेत् ।

Therefore (after having tasted already the Soma juice by drinking from the Grahas belonging to two deities) he ought to eat the food (Puroḍâśa) which he has in his hand, and then drink from his own cup (chamasa).

मूलम्

तस्मादवन्तरेळमेव पूर्वाम्प्राश्नीयादथ होतृचमसम्भक्षयेत् ।

विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः

तदुभयतो ऽन्नाद्यम्परिगृह्णाति सोमपीथाभ्यामन्नाद्यस्य परिगृहीत्यै ।

In this way, he takes (for himself) nourishment of both kinds (food and drink). By taking both Soma draughts (from the graha and the chamasa) he obtains (for himself) nourishment (of all kinds).

मूलम्

तदुभयतो ऽन्नाद्यम्परिगृह्णाति सोमपीथाभ्यामन्नाद्यस्य परिगृहीत्यै ।

विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः

प्राणा वै द्विदेवत्या आत्मा होतृचमसः ।

The Soma jars belonging to two deities are the vital airs; the Chamasa of the Hotar is the soul.

मूलम्

प्राणा वै द्विदेवत्या आत्मा होतृचमसः ।

विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः

द्विदेवत्यानां संस्रवान्होतृचमसे समवनयत्यात्मन्येव तद्धोता प्राणान्समवनयते सर्वायुः सर्वायुत्वाय ।

Haug

By pouring drops from the Soma jars belonging to two deities in the Chamasa of the Hotar, the Hotar puts (in his own body) the vital airs for obtaining his full age.

मूलम्

द्विदेवत्यानां संस्रवान्होतृचमसे समवनयत्यात्मन्येव तद्धोता प्राणान्समवनयते सर्वायुः सर्वायुत्वाय ।

विश्वास-प्रस्तुतिः

सर्वमायुरेति य एवं वेद ।

He who has such a knowledge attains to his full age (100 years).
