37 (38). The wife to the husband.

Comment

Wanting in Pāipp., but perhaps by reason of the lacuna noted under the preceding verse. Employed by Kāuś. (79. 7) in the same ceremony as the preceding hymn, with the direction ity abhichādayati, which may well enough mean, as plainly required by the sense of the verse, ‘she envelops him,’ but is explained by the schol. as ‘one envelops the two spouses.’

A nuptial charm to be spoken by the bride

Translation

1. I bridle (abhi-dhā) thee with my Manu-born garment, that thou
   mayest be wholly mine, mayest not make mention of other women.

Notes

The comm. explains manu- alternatively by mantreṇa, and takes
kīrtayās as = uccares; and he supplies nāmadheyam as the latter’s
direct object, governing anyāsām. “Manu-born” is a strange epithet for
a garment; perhaps the woman’s embrace is intended, or her hair—if this
be not too poetic. The second half-verse is nearly identical with 38. 4
c, d.

With this my robe, inherited from Manu, I envelop thee, So that thou mayst be all mine own and give no thought to other dames.

विवाह में प्रतिज्ञा का उपदेश।

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - [हे स्वामिन् !] (मनुजातेन) मननशील मनुष्यों में प्रसिद्ध (मम वाससा) अपने वस्त्र से (त्वा) तुझे (अभि दधामि) मैं बाँधती हूँ। (यथा) जिससे तू (केवलः) केवल (मम) मेरा (असः) होवे, (चन) और (अन्यासाम्) अन्य स्त्रियों का (न कीर्तयाः) तू न ध्यान करे ॥१॥

भावार्थभाषाः - विवाह में विद्वानों के बीच वस्त्र का गठबन्धन करके वधू और वर दृढ़ प्रतिज्ञा करें कि पत्नी पतिव्रता और पति पत्नीव्रत होकर गृहस्थ आश्रम को प्रीतिपूर्वक निबाहें ॥१॥
