11 (12). Against injury to the grain by lightning.

Comment

Like the preceding hymn, not found in Pāipp.; also not in any other known text. Kāuś. uses it (38. 8), with i. 13, in a ceremony against the effect of lightning; and also (139. 8), with the same and other hymns, in the rites of entrance upon Vedic study (upākarman, comm.). And the comm. quotes it as applied in śānti-Kalpa 15 with observances to ketu.

A prayer to protect corn from lightning and drought

Translation

1. Thy broad thundering, which, exalted, a sign of the gods, spreads
   over (? ā-bhūṣ) this all—do not, O god, smite our grain with the
   lightning, and do not smite [it] with the sun’s rays.

Notes

Sundry of the mss. (including our Bp.²P.M.E.O.) read riṣvás in a
(P.M. yā before it); the comm. has ruṣvas. The latter explains ā
bhūṣati as = vyāpnoti. Some mss., as usual, retain the ḥ of
pṛthúḥ before stan-.

That far-spread thunder, sent from thee, which cometh on all this world, a high celestial signal Strike not, O God, our growing corn with lightning, not kill it with the burning rays of Surya.

अन्न की रक्षा का उपदेश।

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - (देव) हे जलदाता मेघ ! (यः) जो (ते) तेरा (पृथुः) विस्तीर्ण और (यः) जो (ऋष्वः) इधर-उधर चलनेवाला वा बड़ा, (दैवः) आकाश में रहनेवाला, (केतुः) जतानेवाला झण्डा रूप (स्तनयित्नुः) गर्जन (इदम् विश्वम्) इस सब स्थान में (आभूषति) व्यापता है। (नः) हमारे (सस्यम्) धान्य को (विद्युता) चमचमाती बिजुली से (मा वधीः) मत नाश कर, और (सूर्यस्य) सूर्य की (रश्मिभिः) किरणों से (उत) भी (मा वधीः) मत सुखा ॥१॥

भावार्थभाषाः - मनुष्य अतिवृष्टि, अनावृष्टि आदि दैवी विपत्तियों का विचार रख कर पहिले से अन्न आदि के संचय से रक्षा का उपाय कर लेवें ॥१॥
