79. For abundance at home.

ऊर्जःप्राप्तिः।
१-३ अथर्वा। संस्फानम्। गायत्री, ३ त्रिपदा प्राजापतया गायत्री।

Comment

⌊“Verse” 3 is prose.⌋ Found also in Pāipp. xix.; and in TS. iii. 3.82-3. Kāuś. uses the hymn in a rite ⌊21. 7⌋ for prosperity (for fatness in grain, comm.), and it is reckoned (note to 19. 1) to the puṣṭika mantras. Vāit. (31. 4) has it in the sattra, on the ekāṣṭakā day, with offerings to the two deities mentioned.

A prayer for seasonable rain and prosperity

Translation

1. Let the lord of the cloud (nábhas) here, the fattener, protect us,
   [grant] unequalledness (?) in our houses.

Notes

For the obscure ásamāti in c, the minor Pet. Lex. conjectures
ásamarti ‘unharmedness,’ which TS. has in the corresponding pāda,
making an anuṣṭubh of the verse, with gṛhā́ṇām ásamartyāi bahávo no
gṛhā́ asan for second half; the comm. explains it as ‘absence of
division (pariccheda)* of the grain lying in our storehouses’; Ppp.
is defaced, but appears to have read something different. TS. further
has nábhasā purás for -saspátis in a. Most of our saṁhitā mss.
(except E.H.s.m.O.) read ṇaḥ after gṛhéṣu; SPP. reports nothing of
the kind from his authorities. The comm. regards Agni as intended by the
“fattener.” *⌊I think the comm. intends rather ‘absence of
determination or measure’: i.e. “may the grain be abundant beyond
measure."⌋

सर्वसम्पत्ति पाने का उपदेश।

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - (अयम्) यह (नभसः) सूर्यलोक का (पतिः) स्वामी परमेश्वर (संस्फानः) यथावत् बढ़ता हुआ (नः) हमारे लिये (नः) हमारे (गृहेषु) घरों में (असमातिम्) असामान्य [विशेष] लक्ष्मी वा बुद्धि (अभि) सब ओर से (रक्षतु) रक्खे ॥१॥

भावार्थभाषाः - मनुष्य सूर्य आदि लोकों के स्वामी परमात्मा की महिमा विचारते हुए विद्या आदि शुभ गुणों की प्राप्ति से असाधारण धन और बुद्धि पाकर आनन्द भोगें ॥१॥

टिप्पणी: १−(अयम्) सर्वव्यापकः (नः) अस्मदर्थम् (नभसः) अ० ४।१५।३। णह बन्धने−असुन्। हस्य भः। नभ आदित्यो भवति−निरु० २।१४। सूर्यस्य (पतिः) पालयिता परमेश्वरः (संस्फानः) स्फायी वृद्धौ−क्त, छान्दसं रूपम्। सम्यक् स्फीतः प्रवृद्धः (अभि) सर्वतः (रक्षतु) पातु (असमातिम्) असेस्तिः। उ० ४।१८०। माङ् माने−ति, यद्वा, मनु अवबोधने−क्तिन्, दीर्घश्च समानस्य सः। असमानां विशेषां मां लक्ष्मीं मतिं बुद्धिं वा (गृहेषु) गेहेषु (नः) अस्माकम् ॥

Translation

2. Do thou, O lord of the cloud, maintain for us sustenance (ū́rj) in
   our houses; let prosperity, let good (vásu) come.

Notes

TS. prefixes sá at the beginning, and has, for b, ū́rjaṁ no dhehi
bhadráyā, then running off into an entirely different close. The comm.
regards Vāyu as addressed.

Lord of the Cloudy Sky, bestow vigour and strength on our abodes. Let wealth and treasure come to us.

सर्वसम्पत्ति पाने का उपदेश।

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - (नभसस्पते) हे सूर्यलोक के स्वामी ! (त्वम्) तू (नः) हमारे (गृहेषु) घरों में (ऊर्जम्) बल बढ़ानेवाला अन्न (धारय) धारण कर। (पुष्टम्) पुष्टि (आ) और (वसु) धन (आ एतु) चला आवे ॥२॥

भावार्थभाषाः - सर्वशक्तिमान् परमेश्वर की उपासना करके जो मनुष्य सूर्य की वृष्टि ताप आदि से उपकार लेते हैं, वे ही सब प्रकार की वृद्धि और धन प्राप्त करते हैं ॥२॥

टिप्पणी: २−(त्वम्) (नः) अस्माकम् (नभसस्पते) हे सूर्यलोकस्य पालक (ऊर्जम्) बलकरमन्नम् (गृहेषु) (धारय) स्थापय (आ) चार्थे (पुष्टम्) पुष्टिम्। वृद्धिम् (ऐतु) आगच्छतु (वसु) धनम् ॥

Translation

3. O divine fattener, thou art master of thousand-fold prosperity;
   bestow upon us of that; assign to us of that; of that from thee may we
   be sharers.

Notes

In the first clause, Ppp. corrupts to sahasrapośiṣe; it omits tasya
no rāsva, and has bhakṣīmahi for bhaktivāṅsaḥ syāma. TS. has
sahasrap-, and, after the division-mark, sā́ no rāsvā́ ’jyānim etc.
(an entirely different close). The last part of the verse is found in K.
v. 4, which reads at the end bhaktivāno bhūyāsma; and TB. iii. 7. 5⁷
has the last phrase with ⌊tásyās te⌋ bhakṣivā́ṇaḥ syāma: a curious set
of variants, all irregular or anomalous. The verse, according to the
comm., is addressed to the sun.

Thou, God bedewed with drops, art Lord of infinite prosperity. Grant us thereof, give us thereof: may we enjoy this boon of thine.

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - (संस्फान) हे सब प्रकार वृद्धिवाले (देव) प्रकाशस्वरूप परमात्मन् ! (सहस्रपोषस्य) सहस्र प्रकार के पोषण का (ईशिषे) तू स्वामी है। (तस्य) उस [पोषण] का (नः) हमें (रास्व) दान कर, (तस्य) उसका (नः) हमारे लिये (धेहि) धारण कर, (तस्य ते) उस तेरी (भक्तिवांसः) भक्तिवाले (स्याम) हम होवें ॥३॥

भावार्थभाषाः - मनुष्य परमेश्वर की भक्तिपूर्वक पुरुषार्थ करके उसके अक्षय भण्डार से सब प्रकार के अन्न आदि पदार्थ प्राप्त करके सदा सुखी रहें ॥३॥

टिप्पणी: ३−(देव) हे प्रकाशमय (संस्फान) सम्+स्फायी वृद्धौ-क्त, छान्दसं रूपम्। हे सम्यक् स्फीत। प्रवृद्ध (सहस्रपोषस्य) अपरिमितपोषणस्य (ईशिषे) ईश्वरो भवसि (तस्य) पोषस्य (नः) अस्मभ्यम् (रास्व) दानं कुरु (तस्य) (नः) (धेहि) धारणं कुरु (तस्य) तथाविधस्य (ते) तव, परमेश्वरस्य (भक्तिवांसः) छन्दसीवनिपौ च वक्तव्यौ। वा० पा० ५।२।१०९। इति भक्ति−वनिप् मत्वर्थे, सकारोपजनश्छान्दसः। भक्तिमान् श्रद्धावन्तः (स्याम) भवेम ॥
