54. To secure and increase some one’s superiority.

अमित्रदम्भनम्।
१-३ ब्रह्मा। अग्नीषोमौ। अनुष्टुप्।

Comment

Found also in Pāipp. xix. Used by Kāuś. (48. 27), in a sorcery, with vii. 70, with the direction ity āhitāgnim pratinirvapati; vs. 2 appears also in the parvan sacrifice (4. 19), with an offering to Agni and Soma. And vs. 2 appears in Vāit. (3. 4), in the parvan sacrifice, with a silent offering to the same gods.

Translation

1. Now do I adorn this man as superior to his fellow, for attainment of
   Indra; do thou increase his authority, his great fortune, as the rain
   the grass.

Notes

The first half-verse is very obscure, and the rendering given only
tentative; it implies the emendation of tát in a to tám, or else
of idám to imám (as antecedent to asyá in c), and the
understanding of yujá as for yujás, instead of yujé, which the
pada-text gives for it both here and in 2 d; to read further
índra (voc.) in b would much lighten the difficulty here, and also
furnish a subject for the appeal in the next line. A dative with
uttara is a construction perhaps unknown elsewhere. The comm.
comfortably explains yuje as a verb “= yojayāmi.” Ppp. reads yujaṁ
(probably a mere error of the transcriber); and, for b, the corrupt
yene ’ndraṁ śumbhā nv iṣṭaye; in c it has yasya for asya. The
Anukr. seems to allow the contraction vṛṣṭir ’va in d. ⌊Roth’s
collation gives yugaṁ in a, and yuga in 2 d; but it may be a
mere omission of the accent by which he distinguishes the palatal sonant
(g′ = our j) from the guttural sonant (g).⌋

Win the love of Indra that his friend may reach yet higher state. Increase, as rain the grass, this man’s dominion and his lofty fame.

राज्य की रक्षा के लिये उपदेश।

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - (इन्द्रम्) सम्पूर्ण ऐश्वर्यवाले राजा को (अष्टये) इष्टप्राप्ति के लिये (शुम्भामि) सुशोभित करता हूँ, [जिस से] (युजे) उसके मित्र के लिये (इदम्) यह और (तत्) वह (उत्तरम्) अधिक ऊँचा पद होवे। [हे जगदीश्वर !] (अस्य) इस पुरुष के (क्षत्रम्) राज्य और (महीम्) बड़ी (श्रियम्) सम्पत्ति को (वर्धय) बढ़ा, (वृष्टिः इव) जैसे बरसा (तृणम्) घास को ॥१॥

भावार्थभाषाः - मनुष्य को योग्य है कि परमेश्वर के अनुग्रह से धर्म आचरण करता हुआ सर्वत्र अपने राज्य की वृद्धि करे ॥१॥

Translation

2. For him, O Agni-and-Soma, maintain ye dominion, for him wealth; in
   the sphere of royalty make ye him superior to his fellow.

Notes

Two or three of our mss. have in b the bad reading dhārayatām;
and, in c, even the majority of them give -vargre (as Bp. at iii.
5. 2, and B. Kp. at xi. 2. 4: but SPP. reports nothing of the sort in
his authorities). Ppp. has yasya for the first asmāi, and asya for
the second, and vardhayatas for dhārayatam in b; also aho for
imam in c.

Confirm the princely power in him, Agni and Soma! grant him wealth. In all the circuit of his rule make him yet higher for your friend.

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - (अग्नीषोमौ) हे सूर्य और चन्द्रमा ! तुम दोनों (अस्मै) इस पुरुष के लिये (क्षत्रम्) राज्य को और (अस्मै) इसके लिये (रयिम्) सम्पत्ति को (धारयतम्) दृढ़ करो। (इमम्) इस पुरुष को (राष्ट्रस्य) राज्य के (अभीवर्गे) मण्डल में (युजे) मित्र वर्ग के लिये (उत्तरम्) अधिक ऊँचा (कृणुतम्) करो ॥२॥

भावार्थभाषाः - जैसे सूर्य-चन्द्रमा नियमबद्ध होकर परस्पर आकर्षण आदि से जगत् का उपकार करते हैं, वैसे ही मनुष्य सब से प्रीति करके अपना राज्य और धन बढ़ावे ॥२॥

Translation

3. Whoever, both related and unrelated, assails us—every such one
   mayest thou make subject to me, the sacrificer, the soma-presser.

Notes

The first half-verse is also 15. 2 a, b, above; the last half-verse
is also 6. 1 c, d. Ppp. has, for b, yo jāto yaś ca niṣṭyaḥ; it
further puts d before c, in the form sarvaṁ īvaṁ rīradhāsi
naḥ.

The man who shows us enmity, whether a stranger or akin, Thou wilt give up entire to me who sacrifice and press the juice.

पदार्थान्वयभाषाः - (यः) जो शत्रु (सबन्धुः) बन्धुओं सहित (च च) और (असबन्धुः) बिना बन्धुओं के होकर (अस्मान्) हमें (अभिदासति) सतावे। (तम्) उस (सर्वम्) सब को (सुन्वते) तत्त्वमथन करनेवाले (यजमानाय) विद्वानों का सत्कार करनेवाले (मे) मेरे लिये (रन्धयासि) वश में कर ॥३॥

भावार्थभाषाः - धार्मिक पुरुष परमात्मा की आज्ञा मान कर तत्त्वमथन कर के शत्रुओं का नाश करें ॥३॥ इस मन्त्र का पूर्वार्द्ध अ० ६।१५-२। और उत्तरार्द्ध अ० ६।६।१। में आया है ॥
