Killing of Jambumali by Hanuman

श्लोकः

सन्दिष्टो राक्षसेन्द्रेण प्रहस्तस्य सुतो बली।
जम्बुमाली महादंष्ट्रो निर्जगाम धनुर्धरः॥5.44.1॥
रक्तमाल्याम्बरधरस्स्रग्वी रुचिरकुण्डलः।
महान्विवृत्तनयनश्चण्डस्समरदुर्जयः॥5.44.2॥
धनुश्शक्रधनुः प्रख्यं महद्रुचिरसायकम्।
विष्फारयाणो वेगेन वज्राशनिसमस्वनम्॥5.44.3॥

शब्दार्थः

महादंष्ट्रः one with big front teeth, धनुर्धरः bow in hand, रक्तमाल्याम्बरधरः adorned with a garland of red flowers and red clothes, स्रग्वी wearing a chaplet, रुचिरकुण्डलः with beautiful earrings, महान् great, विवृत्तनयनः who had big round eyes, चण्डः fierce, समरदुर्जयः invincible in war, बली mighty, प्रहस्तस्य सुतः son of Prahasta,जम्बुमाली Jambumali,राक्षसेन्द्रेण by the demon king, सन्दिष्टः commanded, महत् huge, रुचिरसायकम् who had radiant arrows, वज्राशनिसमस्वनम् making sounds like thunderbolt, शक्रधनुःप्रख्यम् like Indra’s splendid bow (a rainbow), धनुः bow, वेगेन very swiftly, विष्फारयाणः as if thundering, निर्जगाम went out.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Commanded by the demon king, Jambumali the invincible son of Prahasta, who had large teeth in front, big rolling eyes, red flower garland, red robes and a chaplet with beautiful earrings. He went round twanging his producing thunderous sound. His arrows were huge, shining and beautiful.

श्लोकः

तस्य विष्फारघोषेण धनुषो महता दिशः।
प्रदिशश्च नभश्चैव सहसा समपूर्यत॥5.44.4॥

शब्दार्थः

तस्य his, धनुषः bow’s, महता by the huge, विष्फारघोषेण by the twang, दिशः all directions,
प्रदिशश्चैव and intermediate directions, नभश्चैव heavens also, सहसा at once, समपूर्यत were filled.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

All directions including the intermediate directions and the sky were filled with that loud sound produced by his twang.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

रथेन खरयुक्तेन तमागतमुदीक्ष्य सः।
हनुमान्वेगसम्पन्नो जहर्ष च ननाद च॥5.44.5॥

शब्दार्थः

खरयुक्तेन drawn by donkeys, रथेन by the chariot, आगतम् reached, तम् him, उदीक्षय after seeing, सः हनुमान् that Hanuman, वेगसम्पन्नः who was endowed with speed, जहर्ष च felt glad, ननाद च and made a loud noise.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Seeing him coming in a chariot drawn by donkeys, Hanuman who was swift to act was glad (to have an opportunity to fight) and made a loud noise.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

तं तोरणविटङ्कस्थं हनुमन्तं महाकपिम्।
जम्बुमाली महाबाहुर्विव्याध निशितैश्शरैः॥5.44.6॥

शब्दार्थः

महाबाहुः strongarmed one, जम्बुमाली Jambumali, तोरणविटङ्कस्थम् who stood on top of the exit archway, महाकपिम् great monkey, तं हनुमन्तम् that Hanuman, निशितैः with sharp, शरैः with arrows, विव्याध hit hard.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Strongarmed Jambumali with his sharp arrows hit great Hanuman who stood on top of the exit archway.

श्लोकः

अर्धचन्द्रेण वदने शिरस्येकेन कर्णिना।
बाह्वोर्विव्याध नाराचैर्दशभिस्तं कपीश्वरम्॥5.44.7॥

शब्दार्थः

अर्धचन्द्रेण with a crescentshaped arrow, वदने on the face, एकेन with one, कर्णिना ear shaped arrow, शिरसि on the head, दशभिः ten, नाराचैः iron arrows, बाह्वोः into the arms, तं कपीश्वरम् that lord of monkeys, विव्याध hit.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Jambumali released a crescentshaped arrow on the face, one earshaped (barbed) arrow on the head and ten iron arrows into the arms of the lord of monkeys.

श्लोकः

तस्य तच्छुशुभे ताम्रं शरेणाभिहतं मुखम्।
शरदीवाम्बुजं फुल्लं विद्धं भास्कररश्मिना॥5.44.8॥

शब्दार्थः

शरेण by an arrow, अभिहतम् struck, ताम्रम् reddish, तत् his, मुखम् face, शरदि in autumn, भास्करश्मिना with Sun’s radiance, विद्धम् hit, फुल्लम् blown, अम्बुजमिव like a lotus, शुशुभे appeared.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

His red face struck by an arrow appeared like a fullblown lotus in autumn season hit by the rays of the Sun.

श्लोकः

तत्तस्य रक्तं रक्तेन रञ्जितं शुशुभे मुखम्।
यथाकाशे महापद्मं सिक्तं चन्दनबिन्दुभिः॥5.44.9॥

शब्दार्थः

रक्तेन by blood, रञ्जितम् glowing, रक्तम् red, तस्य his, तत् that, मुखम् face, चन्दनबिन्दुभिः with sandal drops, सिक्तम् sprinkled, आकाशे in the sky, महापद्मं यथा like a great lotus, शुशुभे looked bright.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

His red face stained with blood was glowing bright like red lotus in the sky sprinkled with drops of red sandal.

श्लोकः

चुकोप बाणाभिहतो राक्षसस्य महाकपिः।
ततः पार्श्वेऽतिविपुलां ददर्श महतीं शिलाम्॥5.44.10॥

शब्दार्थः

बाणाभिहतः struck by the shafts, महाकपिः great monkey, राक्षसस्य of the demon, चुकोप enraged, ततः then, पार्श्वे lying beside, अतिविपुलाम् huge, महतीम् on the ground, शिलाम् rock, ददर्श he saw.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Struck by the shafts of the ogre, the great monkey was enraged and happened to see
a huge, heavy rock lying beside him on the ground.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

तरसा तां समुत्पाट्य चिक्षेप बलवद्भली।
तां शरैर्दशभिः क्रुद्धस्ताडयामास राक्षसः॥5.44.11॥

शब्दार्थः

बली a powerful one, ताम् that boulder, तरसा with vehemence, समुत्पाट्य having lifted, बलवत् with his strength, चिक्षेप hurled, राक्षसः giant, क्रुद्धः angrily, ताम् that rock, दशभिः with ten, शरैः with arrows, ताडयामास smashed.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Powerful Hanuman with all vehemence lifted the rock and hurled it at the giant which he angrily smashed with ten arrows.

विपन्नं कर्म तद्दृष्ट्वा हनुमांश्चण्डविक्रमः।
सालं विपुलमुत्पाट्य भ्रामयामास वीर्यवान्॥5.44.12॥

शब्दार्थः

चण्डविक्रमः who had fierce power, वीर्यवान् a warrior, हनुमान् Hanuman, तत् that कर्म action, विपन्नम् failed, दृष्ट्वा seeing, विपुलम् huge, सालम् sala tree, उत्पाट्य pulled out, भ्रामयामास whirled.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Hanuman, a strong, powerful and fierce warrior pulled out a sala tree and whirled it. Seeing that his attempt has failed.

भ्रामयन्तं कपिं दृष्ट्वा सालवृक्षं महाबलम्।
चिक्षेप सुबहून्बाणान्जम्बुमाली महाबलः॥5.44.13॥

शब्दार्थः

महाबलः mighty, जम्बुमाली Jambumali, सालवृक्षम् sala tree, भ्रामयन्तम् after whirling, महाबलम् mighty, कपिम् monkey, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, सुबहून् many, बाणान् arrows, चिक्षेप fired.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Gigantic Jambumali seeing the mighty Hanuman whirling the sala tree fired many arrows at him.

सालं चतुर्भिश्चिच्छेद वानरं पञ्चभिर्भुजे।
उरस्येकेन बाणेन दशभिस्तु स्तनान्तरे॥5.44.14॥

शब्दार्थः

सालम् sala tree, चतुर्भिः with four, चिच्छेद cut off, वानरम् vanara, पञ्चभिः with five, भुजे on his arm, उरसि on his chest, एकेन बाणेन with one arrow, स्तनान्तरे in the hollow of the chest, दशभिः with ten.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

He struck the sala tree with four arows, the arm of Hanuman with five arrows, chest with one, the hollow of the chest with ten more arrows.

श्लोकः

स शरैः पूरिततनुः क्रोधेन महता वृतः।
तमेव परिघं गृह्य भ्रामयामास वेगितः॥5.44.15॥

शब्दार्थः

शरैः arrows, पूरिततनुः the body was filled, सः that, महता intense, क्रोधेन with anger, वृतः endowed, वेगितः speedily, तं परिघमेव the same iron spear, गृह्य seized, भ्रामयामास started whirling.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Hanuman filled with arrows all over his body, seized an iron spear (which he made use of in the initial battle) and impetuously spun it in intense anger.

अतिवेगोऽतिवेगेन भ्रामयित्वा बलोत्कटः।
परिघं पातयामास जम्बुमालेर्महोरसि॥5.44.16॥

शब्दार्थः

बलोत्कटः of immeasurable strength, अतिवेगः a hero of great speed, परिघम् iron spear, अतिवेगेन with great speed, भ्रामयित्वा after turning round and round, जम्बुमालेः on Jambumali, महोरसि on the broad chest, पातयामास hurled.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Hanuman of immeasurable strength hurled the iron spear after turning it round and round at high speed on the broad chest of Jambumali.

श्लोकः

तस्य चैव शिरो नास्ति न बाहू न च जानुनी।
न धनुर्न रथो नाश्वास्तत्रादृश्यन्त नेषवः॥5.44.17॥

शब्दार्थः

तत्र there, तस्य his, शिरः चैव even head, नास्ति not there, बाहू shoulders, न not, जानुनी knees, न not, धनुः bow, न not, रथः chariot, न not, अश्वाः donkeys, horses, नादृश्यन्तः not there to discern, इषवः न nothing was seen.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Neither his head could be discerned nor his arms, knees, nor bow, chariot nor donkeys. Nothing was seen.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

स हतस्सहसा तेन जम्बुमाली महाबलः।
पपात निहतो भूमौ चूर्णिताङ्गविभूषणः॥5.44.18॥

शब्दार्थः

तेन by that blow, हतः killed, महाबलः mighty, जम्बुमाली Jambumali, सहसा inconsiderately, निहतः having been killed, चूर्णिताङ्गविभूषणः with his ornaments reduced to powder, भूमौ on the floor, पपात fell down.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Mighty Jambumali killed by that blow dropped down dead at once with his ornaments reduced to powder.

जम्बुमालिं च निहतं किङ्करांश्च महाबलान्।
चुक्रोध रावणश्शुत्वा कोपसंरक्तलोचनः॥5.44.19॥

शब्दार्थः

रावणः Ravana, जम्बुमालिं च even Jambumali, निहतम् being klled, महाबलान् of great strength, किंकरांश्च and kinkaras also, श्रुत्वा hearing, कोपसंरक्तलोचनः bloodshot eyes, चुक्रोध got enraged.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Ravana’s eyes became bloodshot in anger when he heard about the death of Jambumali and of the strong army of kinkaras.

श्लोकः

स रोषसंवर्तितताम्रलोचनः प्रहस्तपुत्त्रे निहते महाबले।
अमात्यपुत्त्रानतिवीर्यविक्रमान् समादिदेशाशु निशाचरेश्वरः॥5.44.20॥

शब्दार्थः

महाबले who had great strength, प्रहस्तपुत्त्रे Prahasta’s son, निहते killed, सः निशाचरेश्वरः demon king, रोषसंवर्तितताम्रलोचनः his eyes red and rolling in anger, आशु quickly, अतिवीर्यविक्रमान् highly valiant wariors, अमात्यपुत्रान् sons of ministers, समादिदेश commanded.

When the mighty son of Prahasta was killed, infuriated Ravana, his eyes red and rolling, commanded the highly valiant sons of ministers.
