Hanuman further narrates his story to Sita – Gives description of Rama and Lakshmana

समस् समविभक्ताङ्गो वर्णं श्यामं समाश्रितः॥5.35.16॥

दुन्दुभिस्वननिर्घोषः his tone is resonant like the drums, स्निग्धवर्णः has beautiful shining complexion, प्रतापवान् full of valour, समः not too tall or short, समविभक्ताङ्गः his limbs are symmetrical, श्यामम् dark, वर्णम् colour, समाश्रितः has proportionate limbs.

त्रिस्थिरः has the three stiff limbs (chest, fist and wrists), त्रिप्रलम्बश्च long in three (arms, eyebrows and scrotum), त्रिसमः has three even parts (locks of hair, knees and testicles), त्रिषु elevated in three parts (abdomen, navel and chest), उन्नतः raised, त्रिषु च all the three parts (soles, nails and eyes), स्निग्धः has coppery reddish colour, नित्यशः all over, त्रिषु in the three parts (the underlines of feet, the hair and the reproductive organs), गम्भीरः is majestic.

चतुर्दशसमद्वन्द्वः he is person with the fourteen parts of his body (eyebrows, nostrils, eyes, ears, lips, nipples, elbows, wrists, knees, testicles, loins, arms, legs and buttocks) in good proportion, चतुर्दंष्ट्रः he is one with four sharp teeth, चतुर्गतिः he moves like a lion, leopard, elephant and bull as occasion demands, महोष्ठहनुनासश्च he has sharp nose, charming lips and jaws, पञ्चस्निग्धः he is one with five smooth parts (hair, eyes, skin, teeth and feet), अष्टवंशवान् his eight parts of the body (backbone, trunk, limbs, fingers, toes, nose, eyes and testicles) are long.

“He is a person with his pairs of eyebrows, nostrils, eyes, ears, lips, nipples, elbows, wrists, knees, testicles, loins, arms, legs and buttocks in good symmetry he has four sharp teeth. He walks in different gaits like a lion, leopard, elephant and bull as occasion demands he has sharp nose, charming lips and jaws. He has smooth hair, eyes, skin, teeth and feet and his eight parts of his body namely back, trunk, limbs, fingers, toes, eyes and testicles are long.

“Ten limbs of the body resemble lotuses. He has proportionate limbs. He is known by the virtue of his spledour, fame and glory. Both his teeth and eyes are fair. Six parts of his body are elevated, nine parts of his body are fine and sharp. He pursues spiritual merit, worldly comfort and sensual delight in three periods of the dayforenoon, midday and evening. He always adopts the righteous way of life.

सत्यधर्मपरः established in truth and righteousness, श्रीमान् prosperous, सङ्ग्रहानुग्रहे रतः he is involved in both accumulation and favourable disposition towards others, देशकालविभागज्ञः who discharges his duties at proper time and place, सर्वलोकप्रियंवदः who is loved by all for his endearing words.

“He is ever established in truth and righteousness. He is prosperous and desires to accumulate wealth in order to shower favour on others. He knows the right use of time and place in discharging his duties. He has endeared himself to all by his words.

अनुरागेण रूपेण गुणैश्चैव तथाविधः॥5.35.22॥

देवि O divine lady, तं माम् such me, रामकृतोद्योगम् have taken up Rama’s mission, त्वन्निमित्तम् on your account, इह here, आगतम् came, सुग्रीवसचिवम् minister of Sugriva, पवनात्मजम् son of Vayu, बुद्ध्यस्व you may know.

“O divine lady Know that I have come here for your cause carrying out the mission of Rama. I am Sugriva’a minister and son of the Windgod.

कुशली तव काकुत्स्थस्सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः।
गुरोराराधने युक्तो लक्ष्मणश्च सुलक्षणः॥5.35.74॥
शब्दार्थः
सर्वशस्त्रभृताम् among all wielders of weapons, वरः supreme, तव your, काकुत्स्थ Rama of the Kakutstha race, कुशली he is keeping well, गुरोः of his venerable teacher, आराधने in service, युक्तः engaged, सुलक्षणः a man of auspicious signs, लक्ष्मणश्च Lakshmana also.

“Your lord Rama of Kakutstha race, supreme among wielders of weapons is doing well. So is venerable Lakshmana endowed with auspicious signs engaged in serving him.

तस्य वीर्यवतो देवि भर्तुस्तव हिते रतः।
अहमेकस्तु सम्प्राप्तस् सुग्रीववचनादिह॥5.35.75॥
शब्दार्थः
देवि O queen, वीर्यवतः of valourous, तव your, भर्तुः husband’s, तस्य his, हिते seeking welfare, रतः engaged, अहम् I, सुग्रीववचनात् at the behest of Sugriva, इह here, एकः alone, प्राप्तः reached.

“O queen seeking the welfare of your Valiant husband I came here at the behest of Sugriva all alone.

मयेयमसहायेन चरता कामरूपिणा।
दक्षिणा दिगनुक्रान्ता त्वन्मार्गविचयैषिणा॥5.35.76॥
शब्दार्थः
त्वन्मार्गविचयैषिणा while searching for your location, कामरूपिणा by a person who can take any form at will, असहायेन without any help, चरता while moving, मया by myself, इयम् this, दक्षिणा दिक् southern direction, अनुक्रान्ता reached.

“I can assume any form at my will. I searched for you without any help moving in the southern direction and reached this place .

दिष्ट्याहं हरिसैन्यानां त्वन्नाशमनुशोचताम्।
अपनेष्यामि सन्तापं तवाभिगमशंसनात्॥5.35.77॥
शब्दार्थः
दिष्ट्या fortunately for me, अहम् I, त्वन्नाशम् your loss, अनुशोचताम् regretting, हरिसैन्यानाम् of the vanara army, सन्तापम् grief, तव your, अभिगमशंसनात् by letting them know, अपनेष्यामि I will dispel their sorrow.
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
“Fortunately for me I can finally dispel the fear of the vanara chiefs who are regretting your loss, by letting them know that you have been found.

दिष्ट्या हि मम न व्यर्थं देवि सागरलङ्घनम्।
प्राप्स्याम्यहमिदं दिष्ट्या त्वद्दर्शनकृतं यशः॥5.35.78॥

देवि oh queen, दिष्ट्या luckily, मम my, सागरलङ्घनम् crossing the ocean, न व्यर्थम् is not wasted, दिष्ट्या fortunately, अहम् I, त्वद्दर्शनकृतम् by the act of seeing you, इदम् thus, यशः fame, प्राप्स्यामि I will attain.

“Oh queen luckily for me, crossing the ocean has not gone in vain. I am fortunate because I will attain fame of finding you.

राघवश्च महावीर्यः क्षिप्रं त्वामभिपत्स्यते।
समित्रबान्धवं हत्वा रावणं राक्षसाधिपम्॥5.35.79॥

महावीर्यः mighty hero, राघवश्च Raghava, समित्रबान्धवम् accompanied by friends and relatives, राक्षसाधिपम् king of demons, रावणम् Ravana, हत्वा after killing, क्षिप्रम् very soon, त्वाम् yourself, अभिपत्स्यते will reach you.

माल्यवान्नाम वैदेहि गिरीणामुत्तमो गिरिः।
ततो गच्छति गोकर्णं पर्वतं केसरी हरिः॥5.35.80॥
शब्दार्थः
वैदेहि Vaidehi, गिरीणाम् among the mountains, उत्तमः the best one, माल्यवान्नाम Malyavan, गिरिः mountain, ततः from there, केसरी Kesari, हरिः monkey, गोकर्णम् Gokarna, पर्वतम् mountain, गच्छति went.

“Oh Vaidehi there is a famous mountain called Malyavan. From there a monkey called Kesari went to mount Gokarna.

स च देवर्षिभिर्दिष्टः पिता मम महाकपिः।
तीर्थे नदीपतेः पुण्ये शम्बसादनमुद्धरत्॥5.35.81॥
शब्दार्थः
देवर्षिभिः by the divine sages, दिष्टः predicted, मम my, पिता father, सः महाकपिः that great monkey, नदीपतेः of lord of rivers, ocean, पुण्ये holy, तीर्थे in a place, शम्बसादनम् Sambasadanam, उद्धरत् raised.

“He (Kesari) is said to be my father by the divine sages. He retrieved a piece of land in a holy spot of that sea shore and killed Sambasadana, a demon who was oppressing righteous people.

“O Mythili I was born in that land retrieved by the Windgod. I am known as Hanuman by virtue of my own action.

विश्वासार्थं तु वैदेहि भर्तुरुक्ता मया गुणाः।
अचिराद्राघवो देवि त्वामितो नयिताऽनघे॥5.35.83॥
शब्दार्थः
वैदेहि Vaidehi, विश्वासार्थम् for inspiring confidence, मया by me, भर्तुः your husband’s, गुणाः qualities, उक्ताः are described, देवि O queen, राघवः Raghava, अचिरात् very soon, त्वाम् you, इतः from here, नयिता he will take you away, अनघे lady free from sins.

“In order to inspire confidence in you about me I have narrated the virtues of your husband. O sinless queen Rama will take you from here very soon”.

एवं विश्वासिता सीता हेतुभिश्शोककर्शिता।
उपपन्नैरभिज्ञानैर्दूतं तमवगच्छति॥5.35.84॥
शब्दार्थः
शोककर्शिता tormented by grief, सीता Sita, एवम् in that way, हेतुभिः with possible reasons, विश्वासिता having trusted, उपपन्नैः by the evidences, अभिज्ञानैः with identification, तम् him, दूतम् as a messenger, अवगच्छति she understood.

The griefstricken Sita trusted him by his logical presentation of reasons as well as identifications. She believed that he was a messenger (of Rama).

अतुलं च गता हर्षं प्रहर्षेण च जानकी।
नेत्राभ्यां वक्रपक्ष्माभ्यां मुमोचानन्दजं जलम्॥5.35.85॥
शब्दार्थः
जानकी Janaki, अतुलम् immeasurable, हर्षम् happiness, गता च experienced, प्रहर्षेण in her joy, वक्रपक्ष्माभ्याम् through her curved eyelashes, नेत्राभ्याम् from both eyes, आनन्दजम् arising out of joy, जलम् tears, मुमोच shed.

शब्दार्थः
विशालाक्ष्याः of largeeyed lady, तस्याः her, चारु lovely, ताम्रशुक्लायतेक्षणम् having wide white eyes with tinge of red corners, तत् that, वदनम् face, राहुमुक्तः released from Rahu, उडुराडिव like the Moon, अशोभत shone.

Her face with large eyes with a tinge of red corners shone like the Moon released from Rahu.

हनुमन्तं कपिं व्यक्तं मन्यते नान्यथेति सा।
अथोवाच हनूमांस्तामुत्तरं प्रियदर्शनाम्॥5.35.87॥
शब्दार्थः
सा she, हनुमन्तम् Hanuman, व्यक्तम् clearly, कपिम् the monkey, मन्यते realised, अन्यथा इति none other than, अथ then, हनूमान् Hanuman, प्रियदर्शनाम् a lady pleasing to see, ताम् her,

किं करोमि कथं वा ते रोचते प्रतियाम्यहम्॥5.35.88॥
शब्दार्थः
मैथिलि Mythili, ते to you, एतत् सर्वम् everything, आख्यातम् is narrated, समाश्वसिहि calm down, किम् what, करोमि shall I do, ते to you, कथं वा or how, रोचते it pleases, अहम् I, प्रतियामि I will go back.

“Mythili, everything I intended to say has been narrated to you. Calm yourself down. What shall I do? Or else, tell me what pleases you. I shall go back.

हतेऽसुरे संयति शम्बसादने कपिप्रवीरेण महर्षिचोदनात्।
ततोऽस्मि वायुप्रभवो हि मैथिलि प्रभावतस्तत्प्रतिमश्च वानरः॥5.35.89॥

“(My father) a mighty monkey killed Sambasadana in a battle on the command of a great seer. I am a vanara (born to a monkey) by the impact of the Windgod. I am equal to the Windgod in power.”
