१०० रामस्य कुशलप्रश्नः

Meeting of Bharata and Rama – Rama enquires about his father and others – about Bharata’s rule at Ayodhya.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

जटिलं चीरवसनं प्राञ्जलिं पतितं भुवि।
ददर्श रामो दुर्दर्शं युगान्ते भास्करंयथा॥2.100.1॥

शब्दार्थः

रामः Rama, जटिलम् wearing matted locks, चीरवसनम् wearing bark robes, प्राञ्जलिम् with folded palms, भुवि on the ground, पतितम् fallen, युगान्ते at the time of dissolution of the world, भास्करं यथा like sun, दुर्दर्शम् difficult to look at, ददर्श beheld.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Rama beheld Bharata with matted locks and robes of bark fallen down on the ground with folded hands like the Sun at the time of dissolution of the world. It was really difficult to look at him.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कथंचिदभिविज्ञाय विवर्णवदनं कृशम्।
भ्रातरं भरतं रामः परिजग्राह बाहुना॥2.100.2॥

शब्दार्थः

रामः Rama, विवर्णवदनम् of pallid countenance, कृशम् emaciated, भ्रातरम् brother, भरतम् Bharata, कथंचित् with great difficulty, अभिविज्ञाय having recognised, बाहूना with his arm, परिजग्राह caught hold of.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Rama found it extremely difficult to recognise Bharata with his emaciated body and pallid face. He held him in his arms and lifted him.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

आघ्राय रामस्तं मूर्ध्नि परिष्वज्य च राघवः।
अङ्के भरतमारोप्य पर्यपृच्छत्समाहितः॥2.100.3॥

शब्दार्थः

राघवः born in the race of Raghu, रामः Rama, तं भरतम् to that Bharata, मूर्ध्नि on the forehead, आघ्राय having kissed, परिष्वज्य च and also embracing, अङ्के on his lap, आरोप्य
making him sit, समाहितः with composed mind, पर्यपृच्छत् enquired.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Born in the race of Raghu, Rama embraced Bharata and kissed him on his forehead. Placing him on his lap, he enquired thus with a composed mindः

श्लोकः

मूलम्

क्व नु तेऽभूत्पिता तात यदरण्यं त्वमागतः।
न हि त्वं जीवतस्तस्य वनमागन्तुमर्हसि॥2.100.4॥

शब्दार्थः

तात O dear, त्वम् you, आरण्यम् to the forest, यत् आगतः now that you have come, ते पिता our father, क्व नु where, अभूत् was he, तस्य he, जीवतः while living, त्वम् you, वनम् to the forest, आगन्तुम् to come, न अर्हसि हि does not behove you.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O dear, now that you have come to the forest, where is our father king Dasaratha? You ought not come to the forest while he is living.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

चिरस्य बत पश्यामि दूराद्भरतमागतम्।
दुष्प्रतीकमरण्येऽस्मिन् किं तात वनमागतः॥2.100.5॥

शब्दार्थः

अस्मिन् अरण्ये to this forest, दूरात् from a distance, आगतम् have come, दुष्प्रतीकं of emaciated limbs, भरतम् Bharata, चिरस्य after a long time, पश्यामि I see, बत it is a pity, तात dear brother, वनम् to the forest, किम् why, आगतः did you come?

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

You have come a long distance (from Ayodhya) to this forest, O Bharata It is a pity, dear brother, to see you after a long time, so emaciated. What brings you to the forest?

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिद्धारयते तात राजा यत्त्वमिहाऽगतः।
कच्चिन्न दीनस् सहसा राजा लोकान्तरं गतः॥2.100.6॥

शब्दार्थः

तात dear child, त्वम् you, इह now, यत् आगतः that you have come here, राजा king Dasaratha, कच्चिद्दारयते Is he surviving, I trust so?, राजा king Dasaratha, दीनः dejected, सहसा immediately, लोकान्तरम् to the other world, न गतः कच्चित् I hope he did not depart.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

My dear (brother), now that you have come here, I trust, king Dasaratha is keeping good health and hope, he has not departed prematurely in despondency for the other world.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चित्सौम्य न ते राज्यं भ्रष्टं बालस्य शाश्वतम्।
कच्चिच्छुश्रूषसे तात पितरं सत्यविक्रमम्॥2.100.7॥

शब्दार्थः

सौम्य O gentle one, बालस्य young ones, ते your, शाश्वतम् permanent, राज्यम् kingdom, न भ्रष्टं कच्चित् I trust it has not been forfeited, तात dear child, सत्यविक्रमम् a man whose prowess is truthfulness, पितरम् father, शुश्रूषसे कच्चित् I trust you are looking after.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O gentle one, being young and inexperienced, I trust, you have not forfeited the kingdom for ever. Dear child, I trust, you are looking after father whose prowess is his truthfulness.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिद्धशरथो राजा कुशली सत्यसंङ्गरः।
राजसूयाश्वमेधानामाहर्ता धर्मनिश्चयः॥2.100.8॥

शब्दार्थः

सत्यसंङ्गरः who is true to his promise, राजसूयाश्वमेधानाम् Rajasuya and Ashwamedha sacrifices, आहर्ता performer, धर्मनिश्चयः firm adherent of righteousness, राजा दशरथः king Dasaratha, कच्चित् कुशली I trust he is in good health.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust king Dasaratha, who is true to his promise, a performer of Rajasuya and Ashwamedha sacrifices and a firm adherent of righteousness is in good health.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

स कच्चिद्ब्राह्मणो विद्वान् धर्मनित्यो महाद्युतिः।
इक्ष्वाकूणामुपाध्यायो यथावत्तात पूज्यते॥2.100.9॥

शब्दार्थः

तात dear child, ब्राह्मणः brahmin (versed in the Vedas), विद्वान् learned, धर्मनित्यः ever fixed in virtues, महाद्युतिः effulgent, सः that, इक्ष्वाकूणाम् Ikshvaku’s, उपाध्यायः preceptor, यथावत् as usual, पूज्यते कच्चित् I trust he is being honoured.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O dear child I trust, the family preceptor of the Ikshvakus, Vasistha, the brahmin (versed in the Vedas), who is learned, ever fixed in virtues and effulgent is being honoured as usual.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

सा तात कच्चित्कौसल्या सुमित्रा च प्रजावती।
सुखिनी कच्चिदार्या च देवी नन्दति कैकयी॥2.100.10॥

शब्दार्थः

तात dear child, सा कौसल्या that Kausalya, सुखिनी कच्चित् trust she is happy, प्रजावती mother of excellent progeny, सुमित्रा च Sumitra too, आर्या noble, देवी queen, कैकयी Kaikeyi, नन्दति कच्चित् I trust she is delightful.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Dear child I trust, Kausalya and Sumitra, mothers of an excellent progeny are happy. I trust, the noble queen Kaikeyi is happy too.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिद्विनयसम्पन्नः कुलपुत्रो बहुश्रुतः।
अनसूयुरनुद्रष्टा सत्कृतस्ते पुरोहितः॥2.100.11॥

शब्दार्थः

विनयसम्पन्नः one who is endowed with modesty, कुलपुत्रः born of high family, बहुश्रुतः conversant in scriptures, अनसूयुः free from envy, अनुद्रष्टा one who can give directions, पुरोहितः priest, ते to (by) you, सत्कृतः कच्चित् I trust, you honour.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust, you continue to honour the family priest (Suyajna, son of Vasistha) who is endowed with modesty, born of high family, conversant in scriptures, free from envy and who can give you directions with regard to your duties.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिदग्निषु ते युक्तो विधिज्ञो मतिमानृजुः।
हुतं च होष्यमाणं च काले वेदयते सदा॥2.100.12॥

शब्दार्थः

ते your, अग्निषु sacred fires, युक्तः employed, विधिज्ञः knower of ritual precepts, मतिमान् sagacious, ऋजुः upright, सदा always, हुतं च what was offered as oblation, होष्यमाणं च what is going to be offered as oblation, काले at an appropriate time, वेदयते कच्चित् I trust
he informs.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust, the sagacious priest who knows ritual precepts, who is upright and is employed to take care of your sacred fires, informs you always regarding what was offered and what is to be offered as oblation at appropriate time.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिद्देवान्पित्रून् मातृ़र्गुरून्पितृसमानपि।
वृद्धांश्च तात वैद्यांश्च ब्राह्मणांश्चाभिमन्यसे॥2.100.13॥

शब्दार्थः

तात dear, देवान् gods, पित्रून् fathers, मात़ृ़ः mothers, गुरून् teachers, पितृसमानपि relations equal to your father, वृद्धांश्च aged people, वैद्यांश्च physicians, ब्राह्मणांश्च brahmins, अभिमन्यसे कच्चित् I trust you are paying homage.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Dear brother, I trust you continue to pay homage to gods, father, mothers, teachers, relations equal to your father, aged people, physicians and brahmins.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

इष्वस्त्रवरसम्पन्नमर्थशास्त्र विशारदम्।
सुधन्वानमुपाध्यायं कच्चित्त्वं तात मन्यसे॥2.100.14॥

शब्दार्थः

तात dear child, इष्वस्त्रवरसम्पन्नम् he who is furnished with excellent arrows and other weapons, अर्थशास्त्रविशारदम् master in state craft, उपाध्यायम् teacher, सुधन्वानम् Sudhanva, त्वम् you, मन्यसे कच्चित् I hope you pay respect.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I hope you treat with respect Sudhanva who is equipped with the most formidable arrows and other weapons propelled by mantras and a master in the science of statecraft.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिदात्मसमा श्शूरा श्श्रुतवन्तो जितेन्द्रियाः।
कुलीनाश्चेङ्गितज्ञाश्च कृतास्ते तात मन्त्रिणः॥2.100.15॥

शब्दार्थः

तात O dear, आत्मसमाः men equal to you, शूराः brave men, श्रुतवन्तः learned men, जितेन्द्रियाः men with selfcontrol, कुलीनाश्च men of noble birth, इङ्गितज्ञाश्च men skilled in guessing
from hints, ते to you, मन्त्रिणः as ministers, कृताः कच्चित् I hope you have appointed.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I hope, dear brother, you have appointed men who are brave, learned, selfcontrolled, of noble birth and skilled in guessing from hints.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

मन्त्रो विजयमूलं हि राज्ञां भवति राघव।
सुसंवृतो मन्त्रधरैरमात्यै श्शास्त्रकोविदैः॥2.100.16॥

शब्दार्थः

राघव O Bharata, शास्त्रकोविदैः by men learned in scriptures, मन्त्रधरैः by those who can withhold proper counselling, अमात्यैः by ministers, सुसंवृतः wellguarded, मन्त्रः advice, राज्ञाम् to the king, विजयमूलम् root of victory, भवति हि will become.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O Bharata the wellguarded advice of ministers, learned in scriptures and capable of proper counselling, is the root of victory for kings, specially when the advice is kept in confidence.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिन्निद्रावशं नैषीः कच्चित् कालेऽवबुध्यसे।
कच्चिच्चापररात्रेषु चिन्तियस्यर्थनैपुणम्॥2.100.17॥

शब्दार्थः

निद्रावशम् controlled by sleep, नैषीः कच्चित् are you not, I trust, काले at appropriate time, प्रबुध्यसे कच्चित् are awake, I hope, अपररात्रेषु in the early hours, अर्थनैपुणम् about judicious statecraft, चिन्तयसि कच्चित् are you thinking, I trust.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust you are not under the grip of sleep but wake up at appropriate times, I hope you always think of the means of judicious statecraft during the last part of the night.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिन्मन्त्रयसे नैकः कच्चिन्न बहुभिस्सह।
कच्चित्ते मन्त्रितो मन्त्रो राष्ट्रं न परिधावति॥2.100.18॥

शब्दार्थः

एकः alone, न मन्त्रयसे कच्चित् you are not planning, I hope, बहुभिस्सह with many, न कच्चित् hope you are not discussing, मन्त्रितः when decided, ते मन्त्रः that decision, राष्ट्रम् about the kingdom, न परिधावति कच्चित् does not run through, I trust.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I hope you neither decide alone nor discuss with many. I trust a decision once made by you is not leaked in the kingdom.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिदर्थं विनिश्चित्य लघुमूलं महोदयम्।
क्षिप्रमारभसे कर्तुं न दीर्घयसि राघव॥2.100.19॥

शब्दार्थः

राघव O Bharata, लघुमूलम् with a little effort, महोदयम् yielding great result, अर्थम् an endeavour, विनिश्चित्य having determined, क्षिप्रम् quickly, कर्तुम् to execute, आरभसे कच्चित् are commencing, न दीर्घयसि are not postponing unduly.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O Bharata, having determined on an endeavour involving a little effort and yielding great results, I trust you commence to execute it quickly without procrastination?

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चित्तु सुकृतान्येव कृतरूपाणि वा पुनः।
विदुस्ते सर्वकार्याणि न कर्तव्यानि पार्थिवाः॥2.100.20॥

शब्दार्थः

पार्थिवाः other kings, सुकृतान्येव wellaccomplished acts only, पुनः again, कृतरूपाणि वा or almost accomplished, ते your, सर्वकार्याणि all those endeavours, विदुः कच्चित् are informed, कर्तव्यानि endeavours intended to be performed in future, न are not revealed.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust, other kings come to know of your endeavours only when your endeavours suceed or about to succeed. I hope, efforts intended to be made in future are not revealed to them beforehand.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिन्नतर्कैर्युक्त्या वा ये चाप्यपरिकीर्तिताः।
त्वया वा तवामात्यैर्बुध्यते तात मन्त्रितम्॥2.100.21॥

शब्दार्थः

तातः dear, त्वया वा by you, तव your, अमात्यैर्वा or by ministers, मन्त्रितम् determination, तर्कैः by conjecture, युक्त्या वा or by inference, ये चापि other means, अपरिकीर्तिताः so far not been revealed, (with those means or by others), कच्चिन्न बुध्यते I hope are not known.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Dear brother, I hope others are not able to understand your determination or those of your ministers, either by conjecture or by inference or through other means without being revealed either by you or by your ministers.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चित्सहस्रान्मूर्खाणामेकमिच्छसि पण्डितम्।
पण्डितो ह्यर्थकृच्छ्रेषु कुर्यान्निश्रेयसं महत्॥2.100.22॥

शब्दार्थः

मूर्खाणाम् among fools, सहस्रात् in preferance to a thousand, एकम् single, पण्डितम् wise man, इच्चसि कच्चित् I hope are preferring, अर्थकृच्छेषु in difficult situations, पण्डितः a wise man, महत् immense, निश्रेयसम् help, कुर्यात् will render.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I hope by setting aside a thousand fools, you prefer a single wise man. A wise man will be of immense help in difficult situations.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

सहस्राण्यपि मूर्खाणां युद्युपास्ते महीपतिः।
अथवाप्ययुतान्येव नास्ति तेषु सहायता॥2.100.23॥

शब्दार्थः

महीपतिः king, मूर्खाणाम् fools, सहस्राणि in thousands, अथवा or else, अयुतान्येव or tens of thousands, उपास्ते यद्यपि even if he seeks assistance, तेषु among them, सहायता help, नास्ति not there.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Even if the king seeks the assistance from thousands or tens of thousands of fools, they cannot render any help to him.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

एकोऽप्यमात्यो मेधावी शूरो दक्षो विचक्षणः।
राजानं राजपुत्रं वा प्रापयेन्महतीं श्रियम्॥2.100.24॥

शब्दार्थः

मेधावी prudent, शूरः brave, दक्षः skilful, विचक्षणः clearsighted man, एकः a single one, अमात्यः अपि even minister, राजानम् the king, राजपुत्रं वा or a prince, श्रियम् prosperity, प्रापयेत् can bring.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

A single clearsighted minister who is prudent, brave and skilful can bring about great
prosperity to a king or a prince.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिन्मुख्या महात्स्वेव मध्यमेषु च मध्यमाः।
जघन्याश्च जघन्येषु भृत्याः कर्मसु योजिताः॥2.100.25॥

शब्दार्थः

मुख्याः important, भृत्याः servants, महत्सु in important, कर्मसु एव in tasks, योजिताः कच्चित् have been employed, I hope, मध्यमाः mediocre men, मध्यमेषु to the mediocre tasks, जघन्याः तु low people, जघन्येषु in the lower tasks, योजिता कच्चित् are employed, I hope.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I hope you have employed highly competent servants for important tasks, mediocre servants in mediocre tasks and low people in inferior tasks.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

अमात्यानुपधातीतान्पितृपैतामहाञ्छुचीन्।
श्रेष्ठांछ्रेष्ठेषुकच्चित्वं नियोजयसि कर्मसु॥2.100.26॥

शब्दार्थः

उपधातीतान् unyielding to bribery and other temptations, पितृपैतामहान् men who hold hereditary positions, शुचीन् full of integrity, श्रेष्ठान् eminent, अमात्यान् ministers, त्वम् you, श्रेष्ठेषु for superior, कर्मसु for tasks, नियोजयसि कच्चित् I hope you are assigning.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I hope you are assigning ministers, who are unyielding to bribery and other temptations, holding positions hereditarily and who are full of integrity and eminence, with superior tasks.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिन्नोग्रेण दण्डेन भृशमुद्वेजितप्रजम्।
राष्ट्रं तवानुजानन्ति मन्त्रिणः कैकयीसुत॥2.100.27॥

शब्दार्थः

कैकयीसुत O Bharata, उग्रेण by severe, दण्डेन with punishment, भृशम् excessively, तव राष्ट्रम् your kingdom, उद्वेजितप्रजम् citizens being agitated, मन्त्रिणः ministers, नानुजानन्ति कच्चित् I suppose will not permit so.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Are not the citizens of your kingdom agitated at severe punishment meted out to them reproaching your ministers?

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चित्त्वां नावजानन्ति याजकाः पतितं यथा।
उग्रप्रतिग्रहीतारं कामयानमिव स्त्रियः॥2.100.28॥

शब्दार्थः

याजकाः performers of sacrifice, उग्रप्रतिग्रहीतारम् accepting unmerited charity, पतितं यथा like an outcaste, स्त्रियः women, कामयानम् इव to a lustful one, त्वाम् you, नावजानन्ति कच्चित् hope they are not insulting you.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Just like a performer of sacrifice scorns at an outcaste or a woman scorns at a lustful lover, do the subjects not scorn you for collecting taxes more than what is due?

श्लोकः

मूलम्

उपायकुशलं वैद्यं भृत्यसंदूषणे रतम्।
शूरमैश्वर्यकामं च यो न हन्ति स हन्यते॥2.100.29॥

शब्दार्थः

उपायकुशलम् skilled in contrivances, वैद्यम् learned person, शूरम् warrior, ऐश्वर्यकामं च passionate for wealth, भृत्यसंदूषणे in corrupting the minds of servants and making them revolt against their master, रतम् one who is engaged, यः such man, न हन्ति will not kill, सः that man, हन्यते will be killed.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

A learned person but skilled in contrivances, a warrior with passion for wealth and a man ever engaged in corrupting the minds of servants must be slain. A king who does not kill them is himself killed in due course.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिद्धृष्टश्च शूरश्च मतिमान् धृतिमान् शुचिः।
कुलीनश्चानुरक्तश्च दक्षस्सेनापतिः कृतः॥2.100.30॥

शब्दार्थः

हृष्टश्च cheerful, शूरश्च brave, मतिमान् sagacious, धृतिमान् steadfast, शुचिः honest, कुलीनश्च born of good family, अनुरक्तश्च also loyal, दक्षः efficient, सेनापतिः chief of army, कृतः कच्चित् I hope has been appointed.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust you have appointed a man who is cheerful, brave, sagacious, steadfast, honest, of a good family, loyal and efficient as the army chief.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

बलवन्तश्च कच्चित्ते मुख्या युध्दविशारदाः।
दृष्टापदाना विक्रान्तास्त्वया सत्कृत्यमानिताः॥2.100.31॥

शब्दार्थः

बलवन्तः powerful, युध्दविशारदाः skilled in war, दृष्टापदानाः men with proven herioc exploits, विक्रान्ताः courageous men, ते मुख्याः those prominent soldiers, त्वया by you, सत्कृत्य having honoured, मानिताः कच्चित् I hope they are respected.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust you honour and respect those prominent soldiers who are courageous, powerful, skilled in war and who have proven heroic exploits.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिद्बलस्य भक्तं च वेतनं च यथोचितम्।
सम्प्राप्तकालं दातव्यं ददासि न विलम्बसे॥2.100.32॥

शब्दार्थः

बलस्य of the army, दातव्यम् to be given, भक्तं च food (rations), यथोचितम् suitable, वेतनं च wages, सम्प्राप्तकालम् in due time, ददासि कच्चित् I trust you are paying, न विलम्बसे not delaying.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust you distribute rations and wages to your army in due time without making delay.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कालातिक्रमणाच्चैव भक्तवेतनयोर्भृताः।
भर्तुः कुप्यन्ति दुष्यन्ति सोऽनर्थस् सुमहान् स्मृतः॥2.100.33॥

शब्दार्थः

भृताः (dependent) attendants, भक्तवेतनयोः regarding food materials and wages, कालातिक्रमणात् beyond stipulated time, भर्तुः about the masters, कुप्यन्ति will be incensed, दुष्यन्ति will become corrupted, सः that one, सुमहान् very great, अनर्थः calamity, स्मृतः has been stated in the scriptures.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

It has been mentioned in the scriptures that if provisions and wages are not paid in stipulated time, the dependent attendants will be incensed with their masters and will turn hostile and become corrupt, leading to great calamity.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चित्सर्वेऽनुरक्तास्त्वां कुलपुत्राः प्रधानतः।
कच्चित्प्राणां स्तवार्थेषु सन्त्यजन्ति समाहिताः॥2.100.34॥

शब्दार्थः

सर्वे all men, प्रधानतः especially, कुलपुत्राः men of our family, त्वाम् to you, अनुरक्ताः कच्चित् I hope they are loyal, समाहिताः men with steady mind, तव अर्थेषु for your cause, प्राणान् life, कच्चित् सन्त्यजन्ति I hope are ready to sacrifice.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I hope all men of a good family, especially those who belong to our race, are loyal to you and are ready to sacrifice their lives for your cause.

श्लोकः

कच्चिज्जानपदो विद्वान्दक्षिणः प्रतिभानवान्।
यथोक्तवादी दूतस्ते कृतो भरत पण्डितः॥2.100.35॥

शब्दार्थः

भरत O Bharata, जानपदः one who is born in your country, विद्वान् wellinformed, दक्षिणः favourable, प्रतिभानवान् one with quick understanding, यथोक्तवादी one who repeats, पण्डितः expert man, ते to (by) you, दूतः as envoy, कृतः कच्चित् I hope has been chosen.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O Bharata, I hope you have chosen as your envoy an expert born in your own country, wellinformed, skilful and quick to understand one who repeats and reports (exactly) what has been told.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिदष्टादशान्येषु स्वपक्षे दश पञ्च च।
त्रिभिस्त्रिभिरविज्ञातैर्वेत्सि तीर्थानि चारकैः॥2.100.36॥

शब्दार्थः

अन्येषु on enemy’s side, अष्टादश eighteen, तीर्थानि officials by close watch, स्वपक्षे on your side, दश पञ्च च ten plus five (fifteen), अविज्ञातैः by those unrecognisable by others, त्रिभिः त्रिभिः three for each official, चारकैः spies, वेत्सि कच्चित् I hope you acquire information.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I hope you collect information (of their secret efforts) intelligently through unrecognisable spies with three of them closely watching each of the eighteen officials (there are eighteen categories of officials in a kingdom) of the enemy’s side and fifteen
(officials) on your side.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिद्व्यपास्तानहितान्प्रतियातांश्च सर्वदा।
दुर्बलाननवज्ञाय वर्तसे रिपुसूदन॥2.100.37॥

शब्दार्थः

रिपुसूदन O slayer of foes, व्यपास्तान् defeated, प्रतियातांश्च having gone back, दुर्बलान् weak, अहितान् foes, सर्वदा at all times, अनवज्ञाय without neglecting, वर्तसे कच्चित् I hope you remain alert.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O slayer of foes, I hope you are always alert about your foes who were defeated by you and have come back. You should not ignore your enemies thinking they are weak.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिन्न लौकायतिकान्ब्राह्मणांस्तात सेवसे॥
अनर्थकुशला ह्येते बालाः पण्डितमानिनः॥2.100.38॥

शब्दार्थः

तात O dear child, लौकायतिकान् thinking of this world only, those atheists, ब्राह्मणान् brahmins, न सेवसे कच्चित् I hope you are not keeping company, पण्डितमानिनः fancying them as learned, बालाः foolish, एते these people, अनर्थकुशलाः हि adept in bringing disaster indeed.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Dear brother, I hope you do not serve those brahmins who are atheists, who foolishly think of this world alone and fancy themselves as learned. They only bring disasters.

श्लोकः

धर्मशास्त्रेषु मुख्येषु विद्यमानेषु दुर्बुधाः।
बुद्धिमान्वीक्षिकीं प्राप्य निरर्थं प्रवदन्ति ते॥2.100.39॥

शब्दार्थः

दुर्बुधाः these superficial fellows, मुख्येषु among the principal, धर्मशास्त्रेषु in scriptures, विद्यमानेषु while existing, आन्वीक्षिकीम् relating to the science of logic, बुद्धिम् intelligence, प्राप्य having obtained, निरर्थम् futile, प्रवदन्ति argue.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

While principal scriptures do exist, these superficial fellows take resort to the science of logic based on abstract reasoning, and indulge in futile talks.

वीरैरध्युषितां पूर्वमस्माकं तात पूर्वकैः।

My dear brother I trust you are protecting the (impregnable) city of Ayodhya worthy of its name, formerly defended by our heroic ancestors, with its sturdy gates, its elephants, horses and chariots, its thousands of venerable, selfcontrolled and highly energetic brahmins, kshatriyas and vaisyas engaged in their respective professions, filled with palaces of various kinds, abounding in learned people and a prosperous city where everything is available in abundance.

O Bharata, my country which is marked with hundreds of sanctuaries near villages where life of the people is made comfortable, where there are shrines, water distribution facilities and tanks, which is wellploughed and rich in cattlewealth, free from violence and independent of rain. It is enchanting. It is safe from wild animals. With fears expelled, free from sinful people, adorned with mines and wellprotected by my ancestors, it is prosperous and I hope people are living comfortably.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चित्ते दयितास्सर्वे कृषिगोरक्षजीविनः।
वार्तायां संश्रितस्तात लोको हि सुखमेधते॥2.100.47॥

शब्दार्थः

तात dear child, सर्वे all men, कृषिगोरक्षजीविनः those who live on agriculture and cattlerearing, ते to you, दयिता कच्चित् I trust are favourable, वार्तायाम् in profession (of cattle raising), संश्रितः depending on, लोकः world, सुखम् happily, एधते हि grows.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust all those men who live on agriculture and cattlerearing are favourable to you.
The world’s prosperity, dear brother, grows on the profession of cattle rearing.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

तेषां गुप्तिपरीहारैः कच्चित्ते भरणं कृतम्।
रक्ष्या हि राज्ञा धर्मेण सर्वे विषयवासिनः॥2.100.48॥

शब्दार्थः

गुप्तिपरीहारैः by affording protection and through prevention of adversities, तेषाम् their, भरणम् maintenance, ते to you (by you), कृतं कच्चित् has been done, I hope, राज्ञा by the king, विषयवासिनः those living in the country, सर्वे all, धर्मेण with righteousness, रक्ष्याः हि are required to be protected.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust you nourish them and also afford portection and prevent adversities. A king must protect all those people living in his country in accordanc with righteousness.

श्लोकः

कच्चिस्त्रियस् सान्त्वयसि कच्चित्ताश्च सुरक्षिताः।
कच्चिन्न श्रद्धास्यासां कच्चिद्गुह्यं न भाषसे॥2.100.49॥

शब्दार्थः

स्त्रियः women, सान्त्वयसि कच्चित् I hope you are pacifying, ताः they, ते to (by) you, सुरक्षिताः कच्चित् I trust they are guarded well, आसाम् words of the women, न श्रद्धास्यासां कच्चित् I trust you believe not, गुह्यम् secret, न भाषसे कच्चित् I trust you do not divulge.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust, you keep the women pacified and wellprotected, you do not believe their words and do not divulge any secrets to them.

श्लोकः

कच्चिन्नागवनं गुप्तं कच्चित्ते सन्ति धेनुकाः।
कच्चिन्न गणिकाश्वानां कुञ्जराणां च तृप्यसि॥2.100.50॥

शब्दार्थः

नागवनम् habitat of elephants, गुप्तं कच्चित् I trust is protected, ते to you, धेनुकाः milch cows, सन्ति कच्चित् I trust you have, गणिकाश्वानाम् mares, कुञ्जराणांच elephants, न तृप्यसि कच्चित् I trust you are not contented.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust, you protect the habitat of elephants and you have a large number of milch cows. I trust you are not contented with the existing number of female and male
elephants and horses.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिद्दर्शयसे नित्यं मनुष्याणां विभूषितम्।
उत्थायोत्थाय पूर्वाह्णे राजपुत्र महापथे॥2.100.51॥

शब्दार्थः

राजपुत्र O prince नित्यम् daily, पूर्वाह्णे early in the morning, उत्थायोत्थाय rising early, महापथे on the thoroughfare, मानुष्याणाम् to the people, विभूषितम् welladorned, दर्शयसे कच्चित् I trust you are presenting yourself.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O prince, I trust, you rise early daily and present yourself welladomed to the people on the thoroughfare.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कच्चिन्न सर्वे कर्मान्ताः प्रत्यक्षास्तेऽविशङ्कया।
सर्वे वा पुनरुत्सृष्टा मध्यमेवात्र कारणम्॥2.100.52॥

शब्दार्थः

सर्वे all, कर्मान्ताः servants, ते to you, अविशङ्कया without fear, न प्रत्यक्षाः कच्चित् I trust do not present themselves, सर्वे all, उत्सृष्टाः वा पुनः or again (I trust) are not kept in a distance, अत्र here, मध्यमेव middle course, कारणम् reason for welfare of all the workers.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

All the servants, I trust, do not present themselves to you directly. At the same time they do not remain out of sight with fear at a distance. The middle course is the best way for the welfare of every one.

श्लोकः

कच्चित्सर्वाणि दुर्गाणि धनधान्यायुधोदकैः।
यन्त्रैश्च परिपूर्णानि तथा शिल्पिधनुर्धरैः॥2.100.53॥

शब्दार्थः

सर्वाणि all, दुर्गाणि the forts, धनधान्यायुधोदकैः with wealth, grains, weapons and water, यन्त्रैश्च with ammunitions or machines of war, तथा similarly, शिल्पिधनुर्धरैः with craftsmen and archers, परिपूर्णानि कच्चित् are adequately provided, I trust.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Hope all the forts are adequately provided with wealth, foodgrains, weapons and water, with machines of war and craftsmen and archers.

श्लोकः

आयस्ते विपुलः कच्चित्कच्चिदल्पतरो व्ययः।
अपात्रेषु न ते कच्चित्कोशो गच्छति राघव॥2.100.54॥

शब्दार्थः

राघव O Bharata, ते your, आयः revenues, विपुलः कच्चित् are abundant, I trust, व्ययः expenditure, अल्पतरः कच्चित् is much less, I hope, ते your, कोशः treasury, अपात्रेषु to undeserving people, न गच्छति कच्चित् does not pass, I trust.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O Bharata, I trust, your revenues are abundant and expenditure much less. I trust you do not give away your treasure to undeserving persons.

श्लोकः

देवतार्थे च पित्रर्थेब्राह्मणाभ्यागतेषु च।
योधेषु मित्रवर्गेषु कच्चिद्गच्छति ते व्ययः॥2.100.55॥

शब्दार्थः

ते your, व्ययः expenditure, देवतार्थे च for the sake of the gods, पित्रर्थे for the sake of ancestors, ब्राह्मणाभ्यागतेषु for brahmins and guests, योधेषु on warriors, मित्रवर्गेषु on hordes of friends, गच्छति कच्चित् is being spent I hope.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust, you are spending only on gods, ancestors, brahmins, guests, warriors and hosts of friends.

श्लोकः

कच्चिदार्यो विशुद्धात्मा क्षारित श्चापरकर्मणा।
अपृष्ट श्शास्त्रकुशलैर्न लोभाद्वध्यते शुचिः॥2.100.56॥

शब्दार्थः

विशुद्धात्मा of purehearted man, आर्यः venerable one, शुचिः honest, अपकर्मणा with unworthy act, क्षारितः falsely accused of adultery, शास्त्रकुशलैः by those wellversed in scriptures, अपृष्टः without consulting, लोभात् out of avarice, न वध्यते कच्चित् I trust is not slain.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust a man who is honest, purehearted and venerable, falsely accused of adultery is not slain out of avarice without consulting experts in scriptures.

श्लोकः

गृहीतश्चैव पृष्टश्च काले दृष्टस्सकारणः।
कच्चिन्न मुच्यते चोरो धनलोभान्नरर्षभ॥2.100.57॥

शब्दार्थः

नरर्षभ O best among men, काले at the time of committing theft, दृष्टः who has been caught redhanded, गृहीतश्चैव one who is arrested, पृष्टश्च one who has been interrogated, सकारणः one who has sufficient evidence, चोरः thief, धनलोभात् out of greed for money, न मुच्यते कच्चित् I hope is not set free.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O best among men I trust that a thief, caught redhanded and interrogated and has sufficient proof is not set free, out of greed for money.

श्लोकः

व्यसने कच्चिदाढ्यस्य दुर्गतस्य च राघव।
अर्थं विरागाः पश्यन्ति तवामात्या बहुश्रुताः॥2.100.58॥

शब्दार्थः

राघव O Bharata, बहुश्रुताः wellinformed, तव अमात्याः your ministers, आढ्यस्य of a rich man, दुर्गतस्य च to a poorman, व्यसने in times of hardship, अर्थम् any matter, विरागाः impartially, पश्यन्ति कच्चित् I trust they look at impartially.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O Bharata, I trust that your ministers are wellinformed and look into all matters in times of hardship pertaining to whether a man is rich or poor without any bias to either.

श्लोकः

यानि मिथ्याभिशस्तानां पतन्त्यश्रूणि राघव।
तानि पुत्रान्पशून्घ्नन्ति प्रीत्यर्थमनुशासतः॥2.100.59॥

शब्दार्थः

राघव Bharata, मिथ्याभिशस्तानाम् of those who are falsely accused, यानि अश्रूणि those tears, पतन्ति fall, तानि they, प्रीत्यर्थम् for the sake of pleasure, अनुशासतः one who commands, पुत्रान्पशून् his sons and cattle, घ्नन्ति they will destroy.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O Bharata, the tears falling from the eyes of persons, who are falsely accused and punished for the pleasure of the king will destroy his progeny and cattle as well.

कच्चिद्वृद्धांश्च बालांश्च वैद्यामुख्यांश्च राघव।
दानेन मनसा वाचा त्रिभिरेतैर्बुभूषसे॥2.100.60॥

शब्दार्थः

राघव Bharata, वृद्धांश्च the old, बालांश्च the children, वैद्यमुख्यांश्च foremost of learned people, दानेन with gifts, मनसा with affection, वाचा with kind words, एतैः these, त्रिभिः with three, बुभूषसे कच्चित् I trust you thrive.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O Bharata, I trust you wish to thrive by treating the old, children and foremost of learned people with the three expedients namely gifts, affection and kind words.

कच्चिद्गुरूंश्च वृद्धांश्च तापसान् देवतातिथीन्।
चैत्यांश्च सर्वान्सिध्दार्थान्ब्राह्मणांश्च नमस्यसि॥2.100.61॥

गुरूंश्च prceptors, वृद्धांश्च the old, तापसान् the ascetics, देवतातिथीन् gods and guests, चैत्यांश्च shrines, सिध्दार्थान् acomplished men, ब्राह्मणांश्च brahmins, सर्वान् all, नमस्यसि कच्चित् I trust you are paying homage.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust you pay homage to the preceptors, the aged ones, ascetics, gods and guests, to shrines and to accomplished brahmins.

श्लोकः

कच्चिदर्थेन वा धर्ममर्थं धर्मेण वा पुनः।
उभौ वा प्रीतिलोभेन कामेन च न बाधसे॥2.100.62॥

शब्दार्थः

अर्थेन with prosperity, धर्मं वा or righteousness, धर्मेण with righteousness, अर्थं वा prosperity, पुनः again, प्रीतिलोभेन longing for pleasure, कामेन with desire for sensual enjoyment, उभौ both, न बाधसे कच्चित् I trust you are not thwarting.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust, righteousness for the sake of prosperity or prosperity for the sake of righteousness or both for the sake of sensual pleasure are not thwarted by you.

श्लोकः

कच्चिदर्थं च धर्मं च कामं च जयतां वर।
विभज्य काले कालज्ञ सर्वान्वरद सेवसे॥2.100.63॥

शब्दार्थः

जयताम् among the victorious, वर best, कालज्ञ one having the knowledge of time, वरद granter of boons (best of men), धर्मंच righteousness, कामंच legitimate pleasure, सर्वान् all of them, काले proper time, विभज्य dividing time for each, सेवसे कच्चित् I trust you are attending.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O Bharata, the best among the victorious, conversant with timely actions and a bestower of boons you are the best of men. I trust, you allocate adequate time for attending to all the three expedients of life like dharma, artha and kama.

कच्चित्ते ब्राह्मणा श्शर्म सर्वशास्त्रार्थकोविदाः।
आशंसन्ते महाप्राज्ञ पौरजानपदैस्सह॥2.100.64॥

महाप्राज्ञ O highly sagacious one, सर्वशास्त्रार्थ कोविदाः those who can comprehend the meaning of all scriptures, ब्राह्मणाः brahmins, पौरजानपदैस्सह along with the inhabitants of the city and country too, ते your, शर्म happiness, आशंसन्ते कच्चित् I trust they are seeking.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O highly sagacious Bharata, those brahmins who can comprehend the meaning of all scriptures along with the inhabitants of the city and country, I trust, are seeking your happiness.

नास्तिक्यमनृतं क्रोधं प्रमादं दीर्घसूत्रताम्।
अदर्शनं ज्ञानवतामालस्यं पञ्चवृत्तिताम्॥2.100.65॥

I trust you eschew the fourteen faults of kings, like atheism, falsehood, anger, inattention, procrastination, evading the wise, indolence, gratification of all five senses, planning alone in the affairs of the kingdom, consultation with people who are proficient in worthless acts, failure to implement decisious, inability to keep the counsel secret and omission of auspicious practices and setting out against all the enemies at a time.

मन्त्रिभिस्त्वं यथोद्दिष्टैश्चतुर्भिस्त्रिभिरेव वा।

त्वम् you, यथोद्दिष्टैः as adumbrated in sacred texts, चतुर्भिः by four, त्रिभिरेव वा or three, मन्त्रिभिः with counsellors, समस्तैः together, व्यस्तैश्च separately with each one, मिथः in secrecy, मन्त्रम् counsel, मन्त्रयसे कच्चित् I trust you deliberate.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust you deliberate in secrecy on your counsel with three or four counsellors, together and separately with each one, as laid down in sacred texts.

कच्चित्ते सफला वेदाः कच्चित्ते सफलाः क्रियाः।
कच्चित्ते सफला दाराः कच्चित्ते सफलं श्रुतम्॥2.100.72॥

शब्दार्थः

ते your knowledge of, वेदाः Vedas, सफलाः कच्चित् I trust is fruitful, ते क्रियाः your acts, सफला कच्चित् I trust are productive, ते दाराः your wife, सफलाः कच्चित् I trust is useful, ते श्रुतम् the scriptures you have heard, सफलं कच्चित् I trust, is useful.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust, the Vedas you have studied are fruitful, the acts which you commenced are productive, your wife is fruitful (blessed with a son) and the scriptures you studied are useful.

श्लोकः

कच्चिदेषैव ते बुद्धिर्यथोक्ता मम राघव।
आयुष्या च यशस्या च धर्मकामार्थ संहिता॥2.100.73॥

शब्दार्थः

राघव O Bharata, ते बुद्धिः your intellect, आयुष्या is enhancing your life span, यशस्या च augmenting your fame, धर्मकामार्थ संहिता in accordance with righteousness, (legitimate) pleasure and prosperity, मम to (by) me, यथा as, उक्ता said, एषैव कच्चित् I trust it is in conformity with that.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O Bharata, I trust your intellect is in conformity with what I said conducive to long life, and fame in accordance with righteousness, (legitimate) pleasure and prosperity.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

यां वृत्तिं वर्तते तातो यां च नः प्रपितामहाः।
तां वृत्तिं वर्तसे कच्चिद्याच सत्पथगा शुभा॥2.100.74॥

शब्दार्थः

तातः our father, याम् वृत्तिम् whichever course, वर्तते is following, याम् which course, नः our, प्रपितामहाः followed by ancestors, या च सत्पथगा which one walks the path of truth, शुभा auspicious, ताम् that, वृत्तिम् course, वर्तसे कच्चित् I trust, you follow.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I trust, you walk the auspicious path of truth (virtue) followed by our father and forefathers.

श्लोकः

कच्चित्स्वादु कृतं भोज्यमेको नाश्नासि राघव।
कच्चिदाशंसमानेभ्यो मित्रेभ्यस् सम्प्रयच्छसि॥2.100.75॥

शब्दार्थः

राघव Bharata, स्वादुकृतम् prepared deliciously, भोज्यम् food, एकः alone, नाश्नासि कच्चित् I trust you are not partaking, अशंसमानेभ्यः to those who desire them, मित्रेभ्यः to friends, सम्प्रयच्छसि कच्चित् I trust you are giving it.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O Bharata, I trust you do not partake delicious food all by yourself, and you share it with your friends when they want it.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

राजा तु धर्मेण हि पालयित्वा महामतिर्दण्डधरः प्रजानाम्।
अवाप्य कृत्स्नां वसुधां यथावदितश्च्युतस् स्वर्गमुपैति विद्वान्॥2.100.76॥

शब्दार्थः

महामतिः one who has great wisdom, विद्वान् learned man, राजा तु as for the king, कृत्स्नां entire, वसुधाम् earth, अवाप्य having acquired, प्रजानाम् for people, दण्डधरः holding Danda in hand, यथावत् in accordance with tradition, धर्मेण righteously, पालयित्वा having ruled, इतः from here, च्युतः having been released, स्वर्गम् heaven, उपैति हि will ascend.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

The highly sagacious and learned king, having acquired the entire earth and punishing the people in accordance with tradition and righteously ruling the kingdom, will ascend the his release (from this world).
