Bharadwaja welcomes Bharata and Vasistha – Bharata discloses his intention to get back Rama.

Bharata, the knower of righteous ways and the best among men, saw the hermitage of Bharadwaja from a distance of one krosa and brought his entire army to a halt. He laid aside all his royal robes and weapons. Clad in silk garments, he went on foot along with his ministers, with the family priest Vasistha ahead of him.

Then the scion of the Raghu race (Bharata) halted his ministers within sight of Bharadwaja’s (hermitage) and went along following his priest Vasistha.

शब्दार्थः
अथ thereafter, महातपाः the great ascetic, भरद्वाजः Bharadwaja, वसिष्ठम् Vasistha, दृष्ट्वैव on seeing, अर्घ्यम् इति bring offerings of water, शिष्यान् to disciples, ब्रुवन् saying, तूर्णम् soon, आसनात् from seat, सञ्चचाल moved.
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
On seeing Vasistha, the great ascetic Bharadwaja immediately left his seat and said to his disciples, Bring offerings of water.

समागम्य वसिष्ठेन भरतेनाभिवादितः।
अबुद्ध्यत महातेजास्सुतं दशरथस्य तम्॥2.90.5॥
शब्दार्थः
महातेजाः radiant Bharadwaja, वसिष्ठेन with Vasistha, समागम्य having met, भरतेन by Bharata, अभिवादितः greeted, तम् him, दशरथस्य Dasaratha’s, सुतम् as son, अबुद्ध्यत knew of.
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
After meeting Vasistha and greeted by Bharata, the radiant Bharadwaja could recognize he was the son of Dasaratha.
श्लोकः

ताभ्यामर्घ्यं च पाद्यं च दत्वा पश्चात्फलानि च।
आनुपूर्व्याच्छ धर्मज्ञः पप्रच्छ कुशलं कुले॥2.90.6॥
शब्दार्थः
धर्मज्ञः knower of righteous ways (Bharadwaja), आनुपूर्व्यात् in order, ताभ्याम् to both of them, अर्घ्यं च welcomeoffering, पाद्यं च water for washing feet, पश्चात् thereafter, फलानि
च fruits, दत्वा having given, कुले in the family, कुशलम् welfare, पप्रच्छ enquired.
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
Offering them both in order arghya (welcomeoffering), water to wash their feet and fruits in accordance with the practice, he enquired Bharata about the welfare of the family.

अयोध्यायां बले कोशे मित्रेष्वपि च मन्त्रिषु।
जानन् दशरथं वृत्तं न राजानमुदाहरत्॥2.90.7॥
शब्दार्थः
अयोध्यायाम् in Ayodhya, बले in the army, कोशे in the treasury, मित्रेष्वपि च of the friends also, मन्त्रिषु of the ministers, वृत्तम् wellbeing, जानन् knowingly, राजानम् king, दशरथम् Dasaratha, नोदाहरत् did not mention.
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
He enquired about the welfare of Ayodhya, of the army, treasury, friends and the ministers. But knowingly did not mention about Dasaratha’s wellbeing (the knew Dasaratha was dead).

शरीरेऽग्निषु वृक्षेषु शिष्येषु मृगपक्षिषु॥2.90.8॥
शब्दार्थः
वसिष्ठः Vasistha, भरतश्च also Bharata, एनम् him, शरीरे about his health, अग्निषु his sacred fires, वृक्षेषु his trees, शिष्येषु his disciples, मृगपक्षिषु about animals and birds, अनामयम् well being, पप्रच्छतुः enquired.
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
Vasistha and Bharata also enquired about his health and welfare of his sacred fires, his disciples, animals and birds and trees of the hermitage.

शब्दार्थः
महातपाः the great ascetic, भरद्वाजः Bharadwaja, तथेति saying so, so, तत् that welfare, प्रतिज्ञाय informing, राघवस्नेहबन्धनात् out of affection for Rama, भरतं प्रति addressing
Bharata, इदम् these words, उवाच said.

किमिहाऽगमने कार्यं तव राज्यं प्रशासतः।
एतदाचक्ष्व मे सर्वं न हि मे शुद्ध्यते मनः॥2.90.10॥
शब्दार्थः
राज्यम् kingdom, प्रशासतः while ruling over, तव for you, इह here, आगमने in the arrival, कार्यम् reason, किम् what, एतत् all this, सर्वम् completely, मे to me, आचक्ष्व tell, मे to me, मनः my mind, न हि शुद्ध्यते is not clear about it.
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
Why have you come here when you ought to be ruling the kingdom? Tell me everything about this. My mind is not clear in this matter.
श्लोकः

सुषुवे यममित्रघ्नं कौसल्यानऽन्दवर्धनम्।
भ्रात्रा सह सभार्यो यश्चिरं प्रव्राजितो वनम्॥2.90.11॥
नियुक्तः स्त्रीनियुक्तेन पित्रा योऽसौ महायशाः।
वनवासी भवेतीह समाः किल चतुर्दश॥2.90.12॥
कच्छिन्न तस्यापापस्य पापं कर्तुमिहेच्छसि।
अकण्टकं भोक्तुमना राज्यं तस्यानुजस्य च॥2.90.13॥
शब्दार्थः
अमित्रघ्नम् destroyer of enemies, आनन्दवर्धनम् enhances the delight of, यं that Rama, कौसल्या Kausalya, सुषुवे gave birth, यः that, सभार्यः with his wife, भ्रात्रा सह along with his brother, चिरम् for a long time, वनम् to the forest, प्रव्राजितः has been banished, महायशाः illustrious, यः असौ that Rama, स्त्री नियुक्तेन urged by a woman, पित्रा by his father, चतुर्दश fourteen, समाः years, वनवासी living in the forest, भव shall become, इति thus, इह here, नियुक्तः has been ordered, तस्य his, अपापस्य sinless, तस्य his, अनुजस्य च brother, पापम् harm, कर्तुम् to do, अकण्टकम् without obstacles, राज्यम् kingdom, भोक्तुमनाः to enjoy, इह here, न इच्छसि not intending to do so?
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
Rama, destroyer of enemies and enhancer of the delight of his mother Kausalya, has been banished to the forest for a long time along with his wife and brother. That illustrious one has been ordered by his father to live in the forest for fourteen years through the pursuasion of a woman. To enjoy the kingdom without obstacles do you intend to cause any harm to that irreproachable Rama and his brother?
श्लोकः

एवमुक्तो भरद्वाजं भरतः प्रत्युवाच ह।
पर्यश्रुनयनो दुःखाद्वाचा संसज्जमानया॥2.90.14॥
शब्दार्थः
एवम् thus, उक्तः addressed, भरतः Bharata, दुःखात् with grief, पर्यश्रुनयनः with tears in his eyes, संसज्जमानया with stumbling, वाचा words, भरद्वाजम् to Bharadwaja, प्रत्युवाच ह said in reply.
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
At these words, Bharata, eyes filled with tears of grief, replied to Bharadwaja in a stumbling voiceः
श्लोकः

हतोऽस्मि यदि मामेवं भगवानपि मन्यते।
मत्तो न दोषमाशङ्के नैवं मामनुशास्तु हि।2.90.15॥
शब्दार्थः
भगवानपि even one venerable like you, माम् about me, एवम् in this way, मन्यते यदि if you think, हतः अस्मि I am done with, मत्तः from me, दोषम् evil, न आशङ्के do not suspect, माम् me, एवम् in this way, न अनुशास्तु हि not rebuke.
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
When one so venerable like you too misunderstands me, I am gone. There is no danger for him from me. Do not rebuke me this way.
श्लोकः
मूलम्
न चैतदिष्टं माता मे यदवोचन्मदन्तरे।
नाहमेतेन तुष्टश्च न तद्वचनमाददे॥2.90.16॥
शब्दार्थः
मे माता my mother, मदन्तरे in my absence, यत् whatever, अवोचत् said, एतत् that one, इष्टम् to my liking, न च not, एतेन by this, अहम् I, तुष्टश्च pleased, न not, तद्वचनं those words, न
आददे I do not accept.
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
I do not approve of whatever my mother said in my absence. I am not happy with those words and I do not accept them.
श्लोकः

अहं तु तं नरव्याघ्रमुपयातः प्रसादकः।
प्रतिनेतुमयोध्यां च पादौ तस्याभिवन्दितुम्॥2.90.17॥
शब्दार्थः
अहं तु as for me, नरव्याघ्रम् the best among men, Rama, तम् him, प्रसादकः after persuading, अयोध्याम् to Ayodhya, प्रतिनेतुम् to take him back, तस्य his, पादौ feet, अभिवन्दितुम् च to worship, उपयातः I have come.
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
I have come to worship the feet of Rama, the best of men and persuade him to return to Ayodhya.
श्लोकः

त्वं मामेवंगतं मत्वा प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि।
शंस मे भगवन्रामः क्व सम्प्रति महीपतिः॥2.90.18॥
शब्दार्थः
भगवन् O Lord, त्वम् you, माम् me, एवंगतम् in these circumstances, मत्वा having considered, प्रसादम् kindness, कर्तुम् to do, अर्हसि be pleased, महीपतिः lord of the earth, रामः Rama, सम्प्रति now, क्व where, मे to me, शंस tell.
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
O venerable one in consideration of the circumstances I am in, be kind to me and tell me the whereabouts of Rama, lord of the earth.
श्लोकः

वशिष्ठादिभिः ऋत्विग्भिर्याचितो भगवांस्ततः।
उवाच तं भरद्वाजः प्रसादाद्भरतं वचः।2.90.19॥
शब्दार्थः
ततः then, वशिष्ठादिभिः by Vasistha and others, ऋत्विग्भिः by the priests, याचितः besought, भगवान् the venerable one, भरद्वाजः Bharadwaja, प्रसादात् with pleasure, तं भरतम् to Bharata, वचः these words, उवाच said.

Likewise besought by Vasistha and other priests, the venerable Bharadwaja was pleased to tell Bharataः
श्लोकः

त्वय्येतत्पुरुषव्याघ्र युक्तं राघववंशजे।
गुरुवृत्तिर्दमश्चैव साधूनामनुयायिता॥2.90.20॥
शब्दार्थः
पुरुषव्याघ्रः O best of men, गुरुवृत्तिः conduct towards spiritual preceptors, दमश्चैव control over senses, साधूनाम् of virtuous people, अनुयायिता following, एतत् all this, राघववंशजे born in the Raghu race, त्वयि in you, युक्तम् is appropriate.
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
O best of men (Bharata) your conduct towards the preceptors, your selfrestraint and devotion to the virtuous are all in keeping with those born in the race of Raghu.
श्लोकः

जाने चैतन्मनस्थं ते दृढीकरणमस्त्विति।
अपृच्छं त्वां तथाऽत्यर्थं कीर्तिं समभिवर्धयन्॥2.90.21॥
शब्दार्थः
ते your, मनस्थम् feelings of your heart, एतत् this, जाने च I am aware, दृढीकरणम् अस्तु let it be confirmed, इति in this manner, (तव your), कीर्तिम् fame, अत्यर्थम् greatly, समभिवर्धयन् to increase it, त्वाम् you, अपृच्छम् I asked.
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
I am aware of the feelings in your heart. Even then I enquired in order to confirm it and to further your fame.
श्लोकः

जाने च रामं धर्मज्ञं ससीतं सहलक्ष्मणम्।
असौ वसति ते भ्राता चित्रकूटे महागिरौ॥2.90.22॥
शब्दार्थः
धर्मज्ञम् knower of righteousness (Rama), ससीतम् with Sita, सहलक्ष्मणम् with Lakshmana, रामम् Rama, जाने च I know, असौ ते भ्राता this your brother, चित्रकूटे in Chitrakuta, महागिरौ mountain, वसति is living.
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
I know your brother who is conversant with righteousness is living on Chitrakuta mountain with Sita and Lakshmana.
श्लोकः

श्वस्तु गन्तासि तं देशं वसाद्य सह मन्त्रिभिः।
एतन्मे कुरु सुप्राज्ञ कामं कामार्थकोविद॥2.90.23॥
शब्दार्थः
तं देशम् to that place, श्वः tomorow, गन्तासि shall go, अद्य today, मन्त्रिभिस्सह along with ministers, वस you may stay, सुप्राज्ञ O supremely sagacious prince, कामार्थकोविद who is aware of kama (desire) and artha (prosperity), मे my, एतम् this, कामं desire, कुरु fulfil.
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
O supremely sagacious prince gifted with the knowledge of kama (desire) and artha (wealth), tomorrow you go, but to night stay here with your ministers and fulfil my desire.
श्लोकः

ततस्तथेत्येवमुदारदर्शनः प्रतीतरूपो भरतोऽब्रवीद्वचः।
चकार बुद्धिं च तदा तदाश्रमे निशानिवासाय नराधिपाऽत्मजः॥2.90.24॥
शब्दार्थः
उदारदर्शनः a man of liberal outlook, भरतः Bharata, प्रतीतरूपः expressing his intention, ततः then, तथा be it so, इत्येवम् saying, वचः words, अब्रवीत् said, तदा then, नराधिपात्मजः son of the king, तदाश्रमे in that hermitage, निशानिवासाय to spend the night, बुद्धिम् decision, चकार made.
आङ्ग्लानुवादः
A man of liberal disposition, Bharata expressed his intention, saying, ‘Be it so’. Then the prince made up him mind to spend the might in that hermitage.

Thus ends the ninetieth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
