०४३ कौसल्याक्रोशः

Lamentations of Kausalya.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

ततः समीक्ष्य शयने सन्नं शोकेन पार्थिवम्।
कौशल्या पुत्रशोकार्ता तमुवाच महीपतिम्॥2.43.1॥

शब्दार्थः

ततः then, पुत्रशोकार्ता struck by grief on account of her son’s departure, कौशल्या Kausalya, शयने on the couch, शोकेन due to grief, सन्नम् exhausted, पार्थिवम् king, समीक्ष्य having gazed, तं महीपतिम् to that lord of the world, Dasaratha, उवाच said.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Struck by the grief of her son’s departure, Kausalya looked at the king who lay on the couch completely exhausted and said to him.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

राघवे नरशार्दूले विषमुप्त्वाहिजिह्मगा।
विचरिष्यति कैकेयी निर्मुक्तेव हि पन्नगी॥2.43.2॥

शब्दार्थः

अहिजह्मगा moving obliquely like a serpent, कैकेयी Kaikeyi, नरशार्दूले tiger (best) among men, राघवे in Rama, विषम् venom, उप्त्वा having sown out, निर्मुक्ता casting off the slough, पन्नगी इव like a sheserpent, विचरिष्यति will wander about.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Moving crookedly like a snake, Kaikeyi has released her venom on Rama, the best among men. Now she will move about freely like a sheserpent that has cast off its slough.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

विवास्य रामं सुभगा लब्धकामा समाहिता।
त्रासयिष्यति मां भूयो दुष्टाहिरिव वेश्मनि॥2.43.3॥

शब्दार्थः

सुभगा happly, (Kaikeyi), रामम् Rama, विवास्य having banished, लब्दकामा having satisfied her desires, भूयः again, वेश्मनि in the house, दुष्टाहिरिव like a vicious serpent, माम् me, समाहिता accomplished, त्रासयिष्यति will torture me.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Having banished Rama, she is now happy with her desires fulfilled. And like a vicious serpent living in the house she will again frighten me.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

अथ स्म नगरे रामश्चरन् भैक्षं गृहे वसेत्।
कामकारो वरं दातुमपि दासं ममात्मजम्॥2.43.4॥

शब्दार्थः

मम my, आत्मजम् son, दासम् as slave, दातुम् अपि even to give, वरम् is better, अथ thereafter, रामः Rama, कामकारः discharging the duties, नगरे in the city (Ayodhya), भैक्षम् food obtained by begging, चरन् moving about, गृहे in the house, वसेत् would have lived.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

It would have been better had I offered her my son as a slave. He would have lived on in the house by doing his duties and begging his food in the city.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

पातयित्वा तु कैकेय्या रामं स्थानाद्यथेष्टतः।
प्रदिष्टो रक्षसां भागः पर्वणीवाहिताग्निना॥2.43.5॥

शब्दार्थः

कैकेय्या of Kaikeyi, यथेष्टतः according to her whim, रामम् to Rama, स्थानात् from his place, पातयित्वा having thrown down, अहिताग्निना by the sacrificers, पर्वणि on the new moon days, रक्षसाम् to rakshasas, भागः इव like the share, प्रदिष्टः is given.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

You have thrown away Rama from his place as per the whim of Kaikeyi, like the share of offering meant for gods given away to rakshasas by the sacrificers on the new Moon days.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

गजराजगतिर्वीरो महाबाहुर्धनुर्धरः।
वनमाविशते नूनं सभार्यस् सह लक्ष्मणः॥2.43.6॥

शब्दार्थः

गजराजगतिः having the gait of the king of the elephants, वीरः hero, महाबाहुः mightyarmed, धनुर्धरः archer Rama, सभार्यः with wife, सहलक्ष्मणः with Lakshmana, नूनम् surely, वनम् forest, आविशते is entering.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

My mightyarmed son, a great archer and a hero, Rama whose gait is like that of the king of elephants, must be entering the forest along with his consort Sita and Lakshmana.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

वने त्वदृष्टदुःखानां केकय्यानुमते त्वया।
त्यक्तानां वनवासाय कान्ववस्था भविष्यति॥2.43.7॥

शब्दार्थः

अदृष्टदुःखानाम् who have never seen suffering, कैकेय्याः Kaikeyi’s, अनुमते her desire, त्वया by you, वनवासाय to dwell in the forest, त्यक्तानाम् have been abandoned, वने in the forest, का नु what, अवस्था भविष्यति will be their state.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

You have banished them as per the desire of Kaikeyi. What will be their plight in the forest, for they have never experienced any hardship earlier

श्लोकः

मूलम्

ते रत्नहीनास्तरुणाः फलकाले विवासिताः।
कथं वत्स्यन्ति कृपणाः फलमूलैः कृताशनाः॥2.43.8॥

शब्दार्थः

रत्नहीनाः deprived of best of things, फलकाले at the time of fruition (enjoyment), विवासिताः having been exiled, तरुणाः young people, ते they, कृपणाः living in misery, फलमूलैः fruits and roots, कृताशनाः for food, कथम् how, वत्स्यन्ति will they live?

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Deprived of all costly things they have been banished at the tender age of youth, a time for enjoying their lives. How will they lead a miserable life subsisting on fruits and roots?

श्लोकः

मूलम्

अपीदानीं स कालस्स्यान्मम शोकक्षय श्शिवः।
सभार्यं यत्सह भ्रात्रा पश्येयमिह राघवम्॥2.43.9॥

शब्दार्थः

यत् when, सभार्यम् with wife, राघवम् Rama, सह भ्रात्रा with Lakshmana, इह here, पश्येयम् I shall see, शोकक्षयः annhilation of sorrow, शिवः auspcious, सः कालः that time, इदानीम् now, मम to me, अपि स्यात् will it come?

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Will there ever be that auspicious moment to end my sorrow? When I can see Rama here along with his wife and brother?

श्लोकः

मूलम्

श्रृत्वैवोपस्थितौ वीरौ कदायोध्या भविष्यति।
यशस्विनी हृष्टजना सूच्छ्रितध्वजमालिनी॥2.43.10॥

शब्दार्थः

वीरौ the two heroes, उपस्थितौ having returned, श्रुत्वैव hearing, यशस्विनी famous, अयोध्या Ayodhya, हृष्टजना with cheerful people, सूच्छ्रितध्वजमालिनी uplifted flags, कदा when?, भविष्यति will it be?

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

When will the city of Ayodhya attain that glory when having heard that both the brave brothers have come back the people will rejoice and fill it with uplifted banners?

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कदा प्रेक्ष्य नरव्याघ्रावरण्यात्पुनरागतौ।
नन्दिष्यति पुरी हृष्टा समुद्र इव पर्वणि॥2.43.11॥

शब्दार्थः

अरण्यात् from the forest, पुनः again, आगतौ having come back, नरव्याघ्रौ tigers (best) among men, Rama and Lakshmana, प्रेक्ष्य having seen, पुरी the city of Ayodhya, पर्वणि on a fullmoon day, समुद्र इव like the sea, हृष्टा overflow (overjoyed), कदा when, नन्दिष्यति will it rejoice?

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

When will, like the swelling sea on a full Moon day, the city hail the return of Rama and Lakshmana, the best among men?

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कदाऽयोध्यां महाबाहुः पुरीं वीरः प्रवेक्ष्यति।
पुरस्कृत्य रथे सीतां वृषभो गोवधूमिव॥2.43.12॥

शब्दार्थः

महाबाहुः mightyarmed, वीरः hero, वृषभः bull, गोवधूमिव like cow, सीताम् Sita, रथे on the chariot, पुरस्कृत्य placing in front, अयोध्यां पुरीम् to the city of Ayodhya, कदा when, प्रवेक्ष्यति will enter?

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

When will the mightyarmed hero (Rama) enter the city of Ayodhya with Sita in front in the chariot, like a bull following the cow?

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कदा प्राणिसहस्राणि राजमार्गे ममात्मजौ।
लाजैरवकिरिष्यन्ति प्रविशन्तावरिन्दमौ॥2.43.13॥

शब्दार्थः

प्रविशन्तौ when they enter, अरिन्दमौ subduers of enemies, मम my, आत्मजौ sons, राजमार्गे on the highway, प्राणिसहस्राणि thousands of people, लाजैः with parched grain, कदा when, अवकिरिष्यन्ति shower.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

When will the people in their thousands shower the parched grain on the highway when my sons (Rama and Lakshmana), subduers of enemies, enter the city?

श्लोकः

मूलम्

प्रविशन्तौ कदाऽयोध्यां द्रक्ष्यामि शुभकुण्डलौ।
उदग्रायुधनिस्त्रिंशौ सश्रृङ्गाविव पर्वतौ॥2.43.14॥

शब्दार्थः

अयोध्याम् of Ayodhya, प्रविशन्तौ when they enter, शुभकुण्डलौ wearing auspicious earrings, उदग्रायुधनिस्त्रिंशौ with powerful weapons and swords raised high, सश्रृङ्गौ with peaks, पर्वताविव like mountains, कदा when, द्रक्ष्यामि shall I see?

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

When shall I see both of them wearing auspicious earrings and holding poweful weapons (bows) and swords high, like two mountain peaks?

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कदासुमनसः कन्याद्विजातीनां फलानि च।
प्रदिशन्तः पुरीं हृष्टाः करिष्यन्ति प्रदक्षिणम्॥2.43.15॥

शब्दार्थः

हृष्टाः delighted, कन्याद्विजातीनाम् to young girls and to brahmins, सुमनसः flowers, फलानि च fruits also, प्रदिशन्तः while offering, कदा when, पुरीम् the city, प्रदक्षिणम् circling, करिष्यन्ति will do?

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

When will I see them delightfully moving round the city with young brahmin girls offering them flowers and fruits.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

कदा परिणतो बुद्ध्या वयसा चामरप्रभः।
अभ्युपैष्यति धर्मज्ञस्त्रिवर्ष इव मां ललन्॥2.43.16॥

शब्दार्थः

अमरप्रभः possessing the lustre of gods, धर्मज्ञः knower of righteousness (Rama), बुद्ध्या in wisdom, वयसा च in age, परिणतः fully mature, त्रिवर्षः इव like a three year old boy, ललन् playfully, माम् me, कदा when, अभ्युपैष्यति will he reach?

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

When will Rama, the knower of righteousness, possessing the lustre of gods, and fully mature in age and wisdom come back to me playfully like a threeyearold boy?

श्लोकः

मूलम्

निस्संशयं मया मन्ये पुरा वीर कदर्यया।
पातुकामेषु वत्सेषु मातृ़णां शातितास्स्तनाः॥2.43.17॥

शब्दार्थः

वीर O valiant one, कदर्यया out of avarice, मया by myself, निस्संशयम् undoubtedly, पुरा formerly, वत्सेषु calves, पातुकामेषु thirsting for milk, मातृ़णाम् of mothers, स्तनाः udders, शातिताः hacked by me.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O valiant one, in my previous birth I must have undoubtedly hacked off the udders of cows when the calves were thirsting for milk from their mothers.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

साहं गौरिव सिंहेन विवत्सा वत्सला कृता।
कैकेय्या पुरुषव्याघ्र बालवत्सेव गौर्बलात्॥2.43.18॥

शब्दार्थः

पुरुषव्य्राघ्र O tiger among men, बालवत्सा young calf, गौरिव like cow, वत्सला having affection
in the calf, सा अहम् I, कैकेय्या by Kaikeyi, सिंहेन by lion, गौरिव like cow, बलात् forcibly, विवत्सा separated from the calf, कृता is rendered.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

O best of men I have been forcibly separated from my affectionate son by Kaikeyi just like a cow from its calf by a lion.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

न हि तावद्गुणैर्जुष्टं सर्वशास्त्रविशारदम्।
एकपुत्रा विना पुत्रमहं जीवितुमुत्सहे॥2.43.19॥

शब्दार्थः

एकपुत्रा having only one son, अहम् I, तावद्गुणैः with such virtue, जुष्टम् endowed with, सर्वशास्त्रविशारदम् adept in all shastras, पुत्रं विना without my son, जीवितुम् to live, न उत्सहे हि I do not desire.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I cannot live without my only son who is adept in all scriptures and endowed with all virtues.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

न हि मे जीविते किञ्चित्सामर्थ्यमिह कल्प्यते।
अपश्यन्त्याः प्रियं पुत्रं महाबाहुं महाबलम्॥2.43.20॥

शब्दार्थः

महाबाहुम् mightyarmed, महाबलम् immensely strong, प्रियं पुत्रम् beloved son, अपश्यन्त्याः without seeing him, मे for me, इह in this world, जीविते in this life, किञ्चित् little, सामर्थ्यम् ability, न कल्प्यते हि is not provided.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

Without seeing my beloved son, longarmed and mighty, I have but little strength to live in this world.

श्लोकः

मूलम्

अयं हि मां दीपयते समुत्थितः
तनूजशोकप्रभवो हुताशनः।
महीमिमां रश्मिभिरुद्धतप्रभः
यथा निदाघे भगवान् दिवाकरः॥2.43.21॥

शब्दार्थः

तनूजशोकप्रभवः born out of the grief of separation from my son, अयम् this, हुताशनः fire, समुत्थितः having arisen, निदाघे in summer, उद्धतप्रभः immense heat, भगवान् divine, दिवाकरः Sun, रश्मिभिः with his rays, इमाम् this, महीं यथा like earth, माम् me, दीपयते is burning.

आङ्ग्लानुवादः

I am consumed by this blazing fire of grief caused by separation from my son like the earth scorched in summer by the Sungod with his oppressive rays

श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे त्रिचत्वारिंशस्सर्गः॥
Thus ends the fortythird sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
