टीका

1.3.3 अक्षराधिकरणम् It is argued that in the बृहदारण्यक text (III. viii.8). In that अक्षर (this आकाश is woven like warp and woof; . . . . . . . . . it is devoid of redness, darkness’, etc.)’, the word अक्षर signifies प्रधान as it is the cause of आकाश - the effect; or it signifies the soul which is referred to as अक्षर which, in turn, is the support of प्रकृति - the insentient principle2. It is not so. It is because आकाश is unmanifest प्रधान and अक्षर which is said to be the support of आकाश that is प्रधान can not be प्रधान. The soul too can not be अक्षर because it is said that under the mighty command of the अक्षर the sun and the moon are held in their own courses3 (This kind of command can not be true of the soul). Hence अक्षर refers to the Supreme Brahman. Notes : 1. BG, XV.16. द्वाविमौ पुरुषौ लोके क्षरश्चाक्षर एव च । क्षरः सर्वाणि भूतानि कूटस्थोऽक्षर उच्यते । 2. मुण्ड् Up., I.i.5. 3. बृह् Up., III.viii.9
