Gluco-corticoids

  • a class of corticosteroids (produced in the adrenal cortex, or synthetic analogues thereof), which are a class of steroid (4-ring HC) hormones.

    • Generally, budesonide has a relatively rapid onset of action for an inhaled corticosteroid. Improvement in asthma control following inhalation of budesonide can occur within 24 hours of beginning treatment although maximum benefit may not be achieved for 1 to 2 weeks, or longer.

    • Side effects: Dryness of the mouth, nose and throat, drowsiness - Passes blood brain barrier.

Prostaglandin blocker

  • Aka Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)

  • Prostaglandins are signal-lipids which cause inflammation, but also pain and fever. cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes COX-1 and COX-2 produce them.

  • Side effects: Since the prostaglandins that protect the stomach and support platelets and blood clotting also are reduced, NSAIDs can cause ulcers in the stomach and promote bleeding.

    • Brands: Tylenol
    • Side-effects: Less than aspirin or ibuprofen. Can mess with kidney and liver if used regularly.
  • Aspirin

    • Side effects: Asthma worsening?

Leukotriene modifiers

  • Leukotrienes (triggered by allergen contact) cause coughing, Inflammation, tight muscles.
