A speculative story H might say: There was once a paNDita who possessed enormous knowledge who lived near tiruchendur. He met some Dutch traders and became fascinated with their ships. He convinced them to take him to Holland and secretly set off one fine day across the seas to Europe.

As the bitter winter set in, he expired from the cold. Having become a ghost, he wandered around for a long time and regularly haunted a Linden tree. Eventually, he reincarnated as Jan Gonda.

Having fulfilled his scholarly yearnings over a long life, he eventually passed to the realm of chitragupta. We do not know what exactly befell him thereafter. However, an American woman claiming to be a “medium” reported speaking to the ghost of an American man who felt he had always been a Hindu, who reported seeing Gonda’s specter expounding Indo-European traditions in the realm of the ghosts.
