Brahmins have been there in entire Tamizhakam right from Sangam Era. There are numerous references to Brahmins in Sangam literature.

We know of several Cēra monarchs in the Patiṟṟuppattu (1st - 3rd c. AD) granting Brahmadeya-s. Āṭukōṭpāṭṭu Cēralātaṉ, Imaiyavarampaṉ Neṭuñcēralātaṉ and Celvakkaṭuṅkō Vāḻiyātaṉ.

The poet of the Second Decad (to Imaiyavarampaṉ Neṭuñcēralātaṉ; approx 1st. c. AD), Kumaṭṭūr Kaṇṇaṉār or Kaṇṇaṉ(ār) [Kaṇha/Kṛṣṇa] of Kumaṭṭūr.
