  1. DK (5: 90) suggests adding: na (causing a double negative). ↩︎

  2. M G J DK (5: 90) read bhikṣūṇām in the genitive, and Jha translates: “good and bad conditions of Bhikṣus.” A variant in five manuscripts recorded by Gharpure reads: bhikṣāva. I think this is probably a wrong transcription of bhikṣave, written in the old Nāgari pṛṣṭhamātrā. Now, this is not standard Sanskrit, but the form is found in Pāli and even more significantly in Gāndhāri Buddhist manuscripts from north-western India. Perhaps, Medhātithi living in Kashmir, had access to these kinds of Buddhist texts. We do find texts similar to the one cited by Medhātithi in several Buddhist texts: paśyāmy ahaṃ bhikṣavaḥ divyena cakṣuṣā viśuddhenātikrāntamānuṣyakena satvāṃ cyavantāṃ upapadyantāṃ suvarṇāṃ durvavarṇāṃ sugatāṃ durgatāṃ . . . (_Mahāvastu, _ed. Senart, III: 448). ↩︎

  3. M G 1st ed.: veda ↩︎

  4. M G 1st ed.: -deśāt saṃbhava ↩︎

  5. G: syāt | punaś ca vedaḥ kṛtsna iti ↩︎

  6. J: modaka- ↩︎

  7. M G: ātharvaṇānāmapy ↩︎

  8. M G: prāmāṇya ↩︎

  9. M G J: dharmapratijñāpakatayaiva (I follow DK 5: 92) ↩︎

  10. G: -avagamyaṃ ↩︎

  11. G omits: puruṣasya kartavyam ↩︎

  12. M G: phalasyāsyāśrutatvāt ↩︎

  13. M G: nāmnāyena ↩︎

  14. DK (5: 93): yata (= RV 8.61.13) ↩︎

  15. M G J: nāmāśraya ↩︎

  16. DK (5: 94): laukikavad ↩︎

  17. G: -badhnīyur ananubhūtakena pramāṇena (this may be due to Gharpure’s attempt to “correct” the readings; both M and J have the same reading) ↩︎

  18. DK (5: 94): kenacit ↩︎

  19. G: karmataḥ (clearly a mistake perpetuated in G 2nd ed. also) ↩︎

  20. DK (5: 95): vikalpena (as instrumental) ↩︎

  21. G 1st ed.: liṅgādayo ↩︎

  22. G 1st ed.: liṅgaśrutir ↩︎

  23. G: mūlatve ↩︎

  24. DK (5: 96) omits: granthaṃ ↩︎

  25. J DK (5: 96): saṃpradāyavicchedas (this could be a typo) ↩︎

  26. G: -viprakīrṇa ↩︎

  27. G: kriyāntaragatir ↩︎

  28. G: liṅgādigamyaṃ ↩︎

  29. M G: pratiṣṭhāḥ ↩︎

  30. G: nāstasya ↩︎

  31. M G J: vācistome ↩︎

  32. M G: taiḥ ↩︎

  33. M G: etatparāṇāṃ ↩︎

  34. M G: yām ↩︎

  35. The reading here is confused and corrupt. M G 1st ed. J: aśvamedham aśvaṃ yathā samarpayantaḥ; PK (5: 98): thinks yathā samarpayantaḥ should be changed to yavasam arpayantaḥ; G 2nd ed. emends the texts based on Śabara 2.4.2.8: aśvamedhamātraṃ ghāsaṃ samarpayantaḥ. What I have given is a conjectural emendation; in the reading: yathāsamarpayanti, Mandlik (whom everyone follows) probably read wrongly “thāsam” for “ghāsam”. ↩︎

  36. M G 1st ed.: priyety ↩︎

  37. G 1st ed.: āsitam ↩︎

  38. M G: -mūlatva- ↩︎

  39. M G J all read: roga-. I think this is an error, especially because the absence of rāga, along with dveṣa, has been a constant theme in the commentary on verse 6. DK (5: 98) has the correct reading. ↩︎

  40. DK (5: 100) suggests: vede ↩︎

  41. M G: yatkāryadarśane ↩︎

  42. M G 1st ed.: sarva ↩︎

  43. DK (5: 101) omits: apratyakṣādigocaram (probably a typo) ↩︎

  44. DK (5: 611): pravṛttir yuktety ↩︎

  45. Reading corrupt here. M G 1st ed.: kāryaṃ dharmaprāptyarthaṃ; G 2nd ed.: kāryaṃ dharmaśāstrārthaṃ; J: kāryadharmaśāstyarthaṃ; I follow DK (5: 102); DK places artham within parentheses to indicate doubt about its authenticiy. The reading is clearly doubtful. ↩︎

  46. DK (5: 103): sadācāre (but see samācāre three sentences before) ↩︎

  47. G: vedasyāsyādyaḥ; DK (5: 103) suggests deleting ādyaḥ ↩︎

  48. DK (5: 103) suggests: svid ayaṃ ↩︎

  49. G 1st ed.: -viruddhādiś; G 2nd ed,: -viruddhā ↩︎

  50. M G: tasyādau na bhavet phalam; DK (5: 103): tasyedaṃ na bhavet phalam ↩︎

  51. M G J: tatraikaḥ (I follow DK) ↩︎

  52. J: dhātvarthaḥ phalaṃ ↩︎

  53. DK (5: 104): etan maraṇam ↩︎

  54. DK: iyāt ↩︎

  55. M G 1st ed.: asatyaprāmāṇyahetor; J G 2nd ed.: asatyāprāmāṇyahetor (I follow DK 5: 105) ↩︎

  56. M G add: vede ↩︎

  57. M G: kiṃ for na hi kiṃcit ↩︎

  58. M G: śiṣyair ↩︎

  59. M G 1st ed.: -arhābhya ↩︎

  60. M G: nanu ↩︎

  61. G: vihitaṃ ↩︎

  62. M G: dhā ādhāre. Madhav Deshpande notes in private communication: “The Dhatupatha as given in the NSP edition of the Siddhanta-Kaumudi with Tattvabodhini, 7th edn 1933, p. 734, lists two different roots, 1) डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयो: (जुहोत्यादि), 2) धीङ् आधारे (दिवादि). While धीयते can be a passive form of धा-दधाति, it can be a simple middle form of धी-धीयते from the 4th conjugation. It appears that Medhatithi prefers the latter interpretation.” ↩︎

  63. M G omit: na ↩︎

  64. M G: yathālakṣaṇaṃ ↩︎

  65. M G 1st ed.: arthakāma ↩︎

  66. M G: upalakṣyate ↩︎

  67. M G J: dānenājeyatayā ↩︎

  68. M G: na vacanāt ↩︎

  69. M G: idam anantara- ↩︎

  70. M G 1st ed.: yaṣṭavyasya; G 2nd ed.: yad dravyasya; DK (5: 115) places dravyasya after home ↩︎

  71. DK (5: 115): prakṣepaḥ adhikaraṇaviśeṣe ↩︎

  72. M G: -auṣasaḥ ↩︎

  73. M G 1st ed.: -traye ‘pi śrutividhānān ↩︎

  77. J omit: ca ↩︎

  78. J omit: ca ↩︎
