WRT the boar; In Iranic tradition:
verethraghnO ahuradhAtO hu kehrpa varAzahe
paiti-erenO tizhi-dãstrahe arshnO tizhi-asUrahe
hakeret-janO varAzahe anu-pOithwahe grañtahe ||
verethraghna is invoked as a mighty boar.
In yasna 6.14:
ukhrem taxmem dAmOish upamanem yazatem yazAmaide |
This dAmOish upamana is mighty boar that accompanies mithra on his march. The Germanic occurrence of a boar is hence interesting.
… I’ve convergently suspect that the north- Germanic Hild swine as Odr was an ectype of Odin giving a direct link to the rudrian divo varAha of the Arya-s. That is indeed an important connection – good job! I’d add that the rudrian connection is augmented by the inheritance of the boar nature by the sons of rudra in gotama’s incantation upon his direct vision of the marut-s:
pashyan hiraNya-chakrAn ayodaMShTrAn vidhAvato varAhUn |
I also hold that it is the marut-s who’re referred to as the boars accompanying bR^ihaspati when he stormed the fortress of vala in the quest for cattle:
brahmaNas patir vR^iShabhir varAhair gharmasvedebhir draviNaM vy AnaT ||
Further in the atharvanic tumburu incantation to rudra, he is again termed the boar.
Finally, I’ve also wondered if the divo varAha implies that there was once an early IE boar constellation as suggested for the Greek and Germanic traditions. That is usually positions in the Pisces-Aries region – but that would not per say fit the rudrian connections; unless if we were to place it elsewhere. Following the vR^ishAkapi-sUkta we could say that it was near Canis Major as the said mantra juxtaposes the dog & the boar.
