goddess mahAnAsA, a yoginI, or hastipishAchI (vinAyakI), the shakti of vinAyaka who in the early phase of the gANapatya tradition was shown with an elephant head. A convention preserved in Nepal (to a degree) & the Japanese cult of the god. - MT
