In the kAlikA purANa, shivadUtI is interestingly described as being emanated from the heart of the goddess kaushikI due to a meditation of viShNu (hari):
कौशिक्या हृदयाद् देवी निःसृता ध्यायतो हरेः ।
शिवदूतीति सा ख्याता या च देव-शतैर् वृता ॥
She is said to be surrounded by a 100 gods. Elsewhere, she is described as pherushatair vR^itA: does this imply the gods took the form of jackals, or is it merely a scribal slip?
The text further states:
यः शिवा-विरुतं श्रुत्वा
शिवदूतीं शुभ-प्रदाम् ।
प्रणमेत् साधको भक्त्या
तस्य कामाः करे स्थिताः ॥
If he salutes shivadUtI on hearing the howl of a jackal his desires come into his hand.
As per the older viShNudharmottara she is “shR^i~NgAlavadanA (!)” suggesting that she was originally conceived as a jackal-faced goddess unlike the dhyAna in the kAlikA.p, where her dhyana is given thus:
रूपम् अस्याः प्रवक्ष्यामि
शृणु वत्सैकसम्मतः ।
चतुर्भुजं महाकायं
सिन्दूर-सदृश-द्युति ॥
रक्त-दन्तं मुण्ड-माला-
जटा-जूटार्ध-चन्द्र-धृक् ।
नाग-कुण्डल-हाराभ्यां
शोभितं नखरोज्ज्वलम् ॥
व्याघ्र-चर्म-परिधानं
दक्षिणे शूल-खड्ग-धृक् ।
वामे पाशं तथा चर्म
बिभ्रद् ऊर्ध्वापरक्रमात् ॥
स्थूल-वक्त्रं च पीनोष्ठं
तुङ्ग-मूर्तिर् भयङ्करम् ।
निक्षिप्य दक्षिणं पादं
सन्तिष्ठत् कुणपोपरि ॥
वामपादं शृगालस्य पृष्ठे
फेरु-शतैर् वृतम् ।
ईदृशीं शिवदूत्यास्तु
मूर्तिं ध्यायेद् विभूतये ॥
