नऩ्ऩीरै वाऴि अऩिच्चमे निऩ्ऩिऩुम्
मॆऩ्ऩीरळ् यांवीऴ् पवळ्। ११११

सुमेषु मृदु त्व हि शिराष! विजया मव ।
वत्तोऽपि मार्दवयुता मत्प्रिया, गर्वमुत्सृज ॥ ११११॥

Hail thee, aniccham, the soft flower!
The damsel I dote is softer than thee! *

1111 naṉṉīrai vāḻi aṉiccamē niṉṉiṉum
meṉṉīraḷ yāmvīḻ pavaḷ.

1111. O aniccam flower, the best and softest of all flowers, may you be blest; but do not forget that my lady is yet more tender.

1. நன்னீரை வாழி அனிச்சமே நின்னினும்
மென்னீரள் யாம்வீழ் பவள்.
Soft blessed anicha flower, hail
On whom I dote is softer still. 1111

1111 रे अनिच्च तू धन्य है, तू है कोमल प्राण ।
मेरी जो है प्रियतमा, तुझसे मृदुतर जान ॥

1111. कोमल स्वभावद अनिच्चॆ हूवे नी बाळु! नानु प्रीतिसुव कोमलॆ निनगिन्तलू सुकुमार स्वभावदवळु.

मलर्गाणिऩ् मैयात्ति नॆञ्जे इवळ्गण्

निकदृश्ग्टकुसुमसाम्यमस्यास्तु नेत्रयोः ।
वस्तीति किं धिया चित्त! दृष्ट्वा पुष्पाणि मुह्यसि ॥ १११२॥

O heart, why get distracted seeing common flowers
And match them with her eyes! *

1112 malarkāṇiṉ maiyātti neñcē ivaḷkaṇ
palarkāṇum pūvokkum eṉṟu.

1112. O Mind, when you behold flowers you think that your beloved’s eyes are like these and pine away.

2. மலர்காணின் மையாத்தி நெஞ்சே இவள்கண்
பலர்காணும் பூவொக்கும் என்று.
You can’t liken flowers by many eyed,
To her bright eyes, O mind dismayed. 1112

1112 बहु-जन-दृष्ट सुमन सदृश, इसके दृग को मान ।
रे मन यदि देखो सुमन, तुम हो भ्रमित अजान ॥

1112. इवळ कण्णुगळु हलवरु कण्डु सन्तस पडुव हूगळन्नु होलुवुदॆन्दु भाविसि, आ हूगळन्नु कण्डाग गॊन्दलक्कीडागुवॆयल्ल ओ मनस्सॆ!

मुऱिमेऩि मुत्तम् मुऱुवल् वॆऱिनाऱ्ऱम्

देहस्तु चिकुरस्तस्याः चक्षुषी शूलरूपिणी ।
मुक्ता दन्ताश्चारुगन्धः करौ वंशानुकारिणौ ॥ १११३॥

She has a slender frame, pearly smile, fragrant breath,
Lancet eyes and bamboo shoulders. *

1113 muṟimēṉi muttam muṟuval veṟināṟṟam
vēluṇkaṇ vēyttōḷ avaṭku.

1113. Her body is of rich gold, her teeth pearls. She is fragrant, her eyes dart forth glances like a lance, her shoulders gently curve as the bamboo. O! what a varied charm my beloved has!

3. முறிமேனி முத்தம் முறுவல் வெறிநாற்றம்
வேலுண்கண் வேய்த்தோ ளவட்கு.
The bamboo-shouldered has pearl-like smiles
Fragrant breath and lance-like eyes. 1113

1113 पल्लव तन, मोती रदन, प्राकृत गंध सुगंध ।
भाला कजरारा नयन, जिसके बाँस-स्कंध ॥

1113. बिदिरिनन्थ तोळुगळुळ्ळ ई ऎळॆवॆण्णिगॆ, तळिरिनन्थ ऒडलु मुत्तिनन्थ हल्लु, सुवासनॆयुळ्ळ उसिरु, शूलदन्तॆ (चुचुव) काडिगॆगण्णु.

मुऱिमेऩि मुत्तम् मुऱुवल् वॆऱिनाऱ्ऱम्
वेलुण्गण् वेय्त्तो ळवट्कु। १११३

काणिऩ् कुवळै कविऴ्न्दु निलऩ्नोक्कुम्
माणिऴै कण्णॊव्वेम् ऎऩ्ऱु। १११४

अस्यास्तु चक्षुषा साम्यं न लब्धमिति लज्ज या ।
नतं कुवलयं भूमिं दश्येद्, दृष्टिं लभेत चेत् ॥ १११४॥

Unable to match the eyes of this jewel,
Lilies droop down earthwards in shame.

1114 kāṇiṉ kuvaḷai kaviḻntu nilaṉnōkkum
māṇiḻai kaṇṇovvēm eṉṟu.

1114. The kundalai flower hangs down in shame before the eyes of my tastefully adorned lady-love.

4. காணின் குவளை கவிழ்ந்து நிலன்நோக்கும்
மாணிழை கண்ணொவ்வேம் என்று.
Lily droops down to ground and says
I can’t equal the jewelled-one’s eyes. 1114

1114 कुवलय दल यदि देखता, सोच झुका कर सीस ।
इसके दृग सम हम नहीं, होती उसको खीस ॥

1114. कुवलय पुष्पक्कॆ नोडुव कण्णुगळिद्दरॆ, इवळन्नु कण्डु “ई चॆलुवॆय कण्णुगळिगॆ सरिदॊरॆयागलारॆनॆ” ऎन्दु नाचि तलॆतग्गिसि नॆलवन्नु नोडुवुदु.

काणिऩ् कुवळै कविऴ्न्दु निलऩ्नोक्कुम्
माणिऴै कण्णॊव्वेम् ऎऩ्ऱु। १११४

अऩिच्चप्पूक् काल्गळैयाळ् पॆय्दाळ् नुगप्पिऱ्कु
नल्ल पडाअ पऱै। १११५

मृदुकाये नालयुक्तं सा शिरीपमधारयत् ।
नालाभाराद्भग्नमध्यमभूदशुभनादनम् ॥ १११५॥

The solemn drums will blare if her waist is crushed
By the aniccham she wore with its stalk. *

१११५. aniccham – a flower known for its delicate nature. The idea here is that a woman’s waist is so delicate that it can’t even bear the weight of a delicate flower like aniccham if it is worn without removing its stalk.

1115 aṉiccappūk kālkaḷaiyāḷ peytāḷ nucuppiṟku
nalla paṭāa paṟai.

1115. She decks herself with aniccam flowers without removing the stalks. It is the death-knell of her slender waist.

5. அனிச்சப்பூக் கால்களையாள் பெய்தாள் நுசுப்பிற்கு
நல்ல படாஅ பறை.
Anicha flower with stem she wears
To her breaking waist sad-drum-blares! 1115

1115 धारण किया अनिच्च को, बिना निकाले वृन्त ।
इसकी कटि हिन ना बजे, मंगल बाजा-वृन्द ॥

1115. ई चॆलुव तन्न सुकुमारतॆयन्नु अरियदॆ काण्डदॊडनॆ अनिच्च हूवन्नु मुडियल्लि मुडिदुकॊण्डळु ; अदरिन्द अवळ सुकुमार नडुवु बाडि सॊरगितु. अदरिन्द मङ्गळ वाद्यवु मॊळगलिल्ल.

मदियुम् मडन्दै मुगऩुम् अऱिया
पदियिऩ् कलङ्गिय मीऩ्। १११६

नारीमुखनिशानाथमेदज्ञानविवर्जिताः ।
दिवि ताराः स्वप्रदेशाद् भ्रान्ताः किन्तु भ्रमन्त्यहो ॥ १११६॥

Unable to tell the moon from her face.

1116 matiyum maṭantai mukaṉum aṟiyā
patiyiṉ kalaṅkiya mīṉ.

1116. Even the stars of heaven veer their usual courses mistaking my lady’s face for their queen moon.

6. மதியும் மடந்தை முகனும் அறியா
பதியின் கலங்கிய மீன்.
Stars are confused to know which is
The moon and which is woman’s face. 1116

1116 महिला मुख औ’ चन्द्र में, उड्डगण भेद न जान ।
निज कक्षा से छूट कर, होते चलायमान ॥

1116. चन्द्रनन्नू, ई ऎळॆवॆण्णिन मुखवन्नू निर्णायिसलारदॆ तारॆगळु नॆलॆतप्पि परिभ्रमितगॊण्डिवॆ.

मदियुम् मडन्दै मुगऩुम् अऱिया
पदियिऩ् कलङ्गिय मीऩ्। १११६

अऱुवाय् निऱैन्द अविर्मदिक्कुप् पोल
मऱुवुण्डो मादर् मुगत्तु। १११७

आदौ नष्टकलश्चन्द्रः पुनः प्राप्नोति यः कलाः ।
कलङ्कस्तद्गतो नारीवदने किन्तु वर्तते ॥ १११७॥

Are there spots on my love’s face
Like the spots on the shining moon?

१११७. This couplet may look simple but has been translated differently. The word “अऱुवाय्” has been usually taken to mean “variable, changing or inconstant” [(P.S. Sundaram), ( Shuddhananda Bharatiar)] and thereby interpreted by many as “waning and waxing moon” [(J. Narayanaswamy), (K. Kannan), (G.U. Pope), (M.S. Poornalingam Pillai)]. However, the very next word “निऱैन्द” [which means “filled with”] clearly implies that this word means the ‘spots or craters’ on the moon [“अऱु” can mean “break, crack, split” and “वाय्” “mouth”]. Though the couplets in Kural are usually discrete and independent of each other, there are occasions – especially in division “LOVE” – where the succeeding ones appear in sequence [chapter १३२ is a fine example]. Here it appears that the preceding couplet १११६ compares the lady’s face to the moon, with even the stars being unable to differentiate the two. This couplet takes the love’s face a step further and attempts to differentiate the two. Perhaps this is what is implied here: “Even the shining moon has spots of craters, but none on my love’s face”. Commentator Manakkudavar’s gives a fitting explanation. He says: “इवळ् मुगत्तु मऱुविल्लै यादलान्, अदु मदियोडु ऒव्वादु ऎऩ्ऱु कूऱियदु”.

1117. Is there a dark spot on the face of my lady-love as on the shining moon which waxes and wanes?

7. அறுவாய் நிறைந்த அவிர்மதிக்குப் போல
மறுவுண்டோ மாதர் முகத்து.
Are there spots on the lady’s face
Just as in moon that changes phase? 1117

1117 क्षय पाकर फिर पूर्ण हो, शोभित रहा मयंक ।
इस नारी के वदन पर, रहता कहाँ कलंक ॥

1117. मॊदलु क्षयिसि आमेलॆ तुम्बिकॊण्डु बॆळगुव चन्द्रनल्लिरुवन्तॆ ई हॆण्णिन मुखदल्लि कळङ्कवुण्टॆ?

अऱुवाय् निऱैन्द अविर्मदिक्कुप् पोल
मऱुवुण्डो मादर् मुगत्तु। १११७

मादर् मुगम्बोल् ऒळिविड वल्लैयेल्
कादलै वाऴि मदि। १११८

यदि त्वं मुखवत्त्वस्याः शोभां चन्द्र! वहेस्तदा ।
मत्प्रीतिपात्रं त्वं मूयाः सर्वदा विजयी भव ॥ १११८॥

Hail O moon! If you could also shine as my love’s face,
You too I shall love. *

1118 mātar mukampōl oḷiviṭa vallaiyēl
kātalai vāḻi mati.

1118. Blest indeed are you. Moon! If you will be resplendent without a spot even as the face of my lady, I shall love you with all my heart.

8. மாதர் முகம்போல் ஒளிவிட வல்லையேல்
காதலை வாழி மதி.
Like my lady’s face if you shine
All my love to you; hail O moon! 1118

1118 इस नारी के वदन सम, चमक सके तो चाँद ।
प्रेम-पात्र मेरा बने, चिरजीवी रह चाँद ॥

1118. चन्द्रने, नीनु वर्धिसु! ई बॆडगिय मुखदन्तॆ नीनू बॆळगबल्लॆयादरॆ नीनू नन्न प्रीति पात्रनागुवॆ.

मादर् मुगम्बोल् ऒळिविड वल्लैयेल्
कादलै वाऴि मदि। १११८

मलरऩ्ऩ कण्णाळ् मुगमॊत्ति यायिऩ्
पलर्गाणत् तोऩ्ऱल् मदि। १११९

अस्याः कुसुमनेत्राया मुखसाम्यं यदीच्छसि ।
हे चन्द्र! सर्वदृश्यस्त्वं तदा मा तिष्ठ सर्वदा ॥ १११९॥

O moon, if you imitate my flower-eyed jewel’s face,
Stop revealing thyself to all.

1119. Moon, if you wish to equal the face of my lady then hide yourself from this world.

9. மலர்ன்ன கண்ணாள் முகமொத்தி யாயின்
பலர்காணத் தோன்றல் மதி.
Like the face of my flower-eyed one
If you look, then shine alone O moon! 1119

1119 सुमन-नयन युत वदन सम, यदि होने की चाह ।
सबके सम्मुख चन्द्र तू चमक न बेपरवाह ॥

1119. ओ चन्द्रने, अलरनेत्रयाद ई ऎळॆवॆण्णिन मुखवन्नु नीनु होलबयसुवुदादरॆ, इतररु निन्नन्नु काणुवन्तॆ तोरिकॊळ्ळबेड. निन्न सुन्दर वदनवु ननगॆ मात्र मीसरागिरलि.

अऩिच्चमुम् अऩ्ऩत्तिऩ् तूवियुम् मादर्

शिरीषकुसमं हंसपक्षौ चेत्युभयं भुवि ।
स्त्रीपादमार्दवे दृष्टे नूनं स्यात्यण्टकोपमम् ॥ ११२०॥

Even aniccham flower and swan’s down
Are as nerunji fruit to my maidens’ feet. *

११२०. Simply, it means: “Even flower petals and down feathers are prickly to my damsel’s feet”. Flower aniccham is known for its softness and the fruit nerunji for its thorns.

1120 aṉiccamum aṉṉattiṉ tūviyum mātar
aṭikku neruñcip paḻam.

1120. The soft aniccam flower and the down of the swan are but thistles before the soft feet of my lady.

10. அனிச்சமும் அன்னத்தின் தூவியும் மாதர்
அடிக்கு நெருஞ்சிப் பழம்.
The soft flower and the swan’s down are
Like nettles to the feet of the fair. 1120

1120 मृदु अनिच्च का फूल औ’, हंसी का मृदु तूल ।
बाला के मृदु पाद हित, रहे गोखरू शूल ॥

1120. ई कोमलॆय अडिगळिगॆ अनिच्च हूवू, हंसतॊलिकवू नॆरुञ्जॆ मुळ्ळिनन्तॆ इवॆ.
