गृहस्थ-जीवनम्

इल्वाऴ्वाऩ् ऎऩ्पाऩ् इयल्बुडैय मूवर्क्कुम्
नल्लाऱ्ऱिऩ् निऩ्ऱ तुणै। ४१

त्रयाणाम् अपि वर्णानां
स्व-धर्मम् अनुतिष्ठताम् ।
गृहस्थो धर्म-निरतो
नित्यं साह्य-करो मतः ॥ ४१॥

४१. The three orders possibly refer to these stages: Student, Elders and Renunciates

41. ilvāḻvāṉ eṉpāṉ iyalpu uṭaiya mūvarkkum nallāṟṟiṉ niṉṟa tuṇai.
42. The householder is the prop of the three orders of life in the conduct of their virtue.

5. இல்வாழ்க்கை - Married Life

1. இல்வாழ்வான் என்பான் இயல்புடைய மூவர்க்கும்
நல்லாற்றின் நின்ற துணை
The ideal householder is he
Who aids the natural orders there. 41

41 धर्मशील जो आश्रमी, गृही छोड़ कर तीन ।
स्थिर आश्रयदाता रहा, उनको गृही अदीन ॥

41. मनॆवार्तॆयुळ्ळवनु धर्मगुण शीलराद ब्रह्मचारि, वानप्रस्थ, सन्न्यासि ऎम्ब मूवरिगॆ अवरवर धर्मदल्लि सागलु बॆम्बलवागुत्तानॆ.

इल्वाऴ्वाऩ् ऎऩ्पाऩ् इयल्बुडैय मूवर्क्कुम्
नल्लाऱ्ऱिऩ् निऩ्ऱ तुणै। ४१

तुऱन्दार्क्कुम् तुव्वादवर्क्कुम् इऱन्दार्क्कुम्
इल्वाऴ्वाऩ् ऎऩ्पाऩ् तुणै। ४२

यतीन् मृतान् दरिद्रांश् च
निर्गतीन् अतिथीन् अपि ।
गृहस्थो ऽन्नादि-दानेन
स्वाश्रितान् अपि रक्षति ॥ ४२॥

42. tuṟantārkkum, tuvvātavarkkum, iṟantārkkum, 21 ilvāḻvāṉ eṉpāṉ tuṇai.
43. The householder is the mainstay of the ascetics, the needy and the dead.

2. துறந்தார்க்கும் துவ்வா தவர்க்கும் இறந்தார்க்கும்
இல்வாழ்வான் என்பான் துணை
His help the monk and retired share,
And celebrate students are his care. 42

42 उनका रक्षक है गृही, जो होते हैं दीन ।
जो अनाथ हैं, और जो, मृतजन आश्रयहीन ॥

42. आश्रयविल्लदवरु, दरिद्ररु, सत्तवरु ऎल्लरिगू गृहस्थने आधार.

तुऱन्दार्क्कुम् तुव्वादवर्क्कुम् इऱन्दार्क्कुम्
इल्वाऴ्वाऩ् ऎऩ्पाऩ् तुणै। ४२

तॆऩ्पुलत्तार् तॆय्वम् विरुन्दॊक्कल् ताऩॆऩ्ऱाङ्गु
ऐम्बुलत्ताऱु ओम्बल् तलै। ४३

पितृ-देवातिथीनां च
बन्धूनाम् आत्मनस् तथा ।
सत्-कृतिर् धर्म-मार्गेण
गृहस्थस्य वरा मता ॥ ४३॥

A householder’s main duty is to serve these five:
God, guests, kindred, ancestors and himself. *

43. teṉpulattār, teyvam, viruntu, okkal, tāṉ, eṉṟu āṅku aimpulattu āṟu ōmpal talai.
44. It is the supreme virtue (of the householder) to fulfil his obligations to forefathers, gods, guests, relatives and himself.

3. தென்புலத்தார் தெய்வம் விருந்தொக்கல் தானென்றாங்கு
ஐம்புலத்தாறு ஓம்பல் தலை
By dutiful householder’s aid
God, manes, kin, self and guests are served. 43

43 पितर देव फिर अतिथि जन, बन्धु स्वयं मिल पाँच ।
इनके प्रति कर्तव्य का, भरण धर्म है साँच ॥

43. पितृगळु, देवतॆगळु, अतिथिगळु, नॆण्टरिष्टरु मत्तु तानु- ई ऐवर ऋणगळन्नु सल्लिसुवुदे गृहस्थ धर्मद महोन्नत कर्तव्य.

तॆऩ्पुलत्तार् तॆय्वम् विरुन्दॊक्कल् ताऩॆऩ्ऱाङ्गु
ऐम्बुलत्ताऱु ओम्बल् तलै। ४३

पऴियञ्जिप् पात्तूण् उडैत्तायिऩ् वाऴ्क्कै
वऴियॆञ्जल् ऎञ्ञाऩ्ऱुम् इल्। ४४

अपवाद-भयाद् वित्तं
सम्पाद्य सकलैः सह ।
भुञ्जानस्य गृहस्थास्य
निर्दुष्टं जीवनं भवेत् ॥ ४४॥

His life and lineage will never end
who shuns blame and shares his food.

44. paḻi añcip pāttu ūṇ uṭaittāyiṉ, vāḻkkai vaḻi eñcal, eññāṉṟum, il.
45. If one were to live in fear of infamy and partake of the remains of food (offered) one’s line would never perish.

4. பழியஞ்சிப் பாத்தூண் உடைத்தாயின் வாழ்க்கை
வழியெஞ்சல் எஞ்ஞான்றும் இல்
Sin he shuns and food he shares
His home is bright and brighter fares. 44

44 पापभीरु हो धन कमा, बाँट यथोचित अंश ।
जो भोगे उस पुरुष का, नष्ट न होगा वंश ॥

44. अपनिन्दॆगञ्जि, इतररॊन्दिगॆ तन्न स्वत्तन्नु हञ्चिकॊण्डु उण्णुववन वंशवु नाशविल्लदॆ चिरकाल उळियुत्तदॆ.

पऴियञ्जिप् पात्तूण् उडैत्तायिऩ् वाऴ्क्कै
वऴियॆञ्जल् ऎञ्ञाऩ्ऱुम् इल्। ४४

अऩ्पुम् अऱऩुम् उडैत्तायिऩ् इल्वाऴ्क्कै
पण्बुम् पयऩुम् अदु। ४५

गार्हस्थ्य-जीवनं यत् स्यात्
स्नेह-धर्म-समन्वितम् ।
तद् एव सार्थकं लोके
तद् +धि गार्हस्थ्यम् उच्यते ॥ ४५॥

45. aṉpum aṟaṉum uṭaittuāyiṉ, ilvāḻkkai paṇpum payaṉum atu.
46. The life of householder marked by love and rectitude is itself virtue and its fruit.

5. அன்பும் அறனும் உடைத்தாயின் இல்வாழ்க்கை
பண்பும் பயனும் அது
In grace and gain the home excels,
Where love with virtue sweetly dwells. 45

45 प्रेम- युक्त गार्हस्थ्य हो, तथा धर्म से पूर्ण ।
तो समझो वह धन्य है, तथा सुफल से पूर्ण ॥

45. प्रीति, सच्चारित्र्यगळन्नु पडदरॆ, अदे गृहस्थ धर्मद कीर्ति मत्तु फलगळु.

अऩ्पुम् अऱऩुम् उडैत्तायिऩ् इल्वाऴ्क्कै
पण्बुम् पयऩुम् अदु। ४५

अऱत्ताऱ्ऱिऩ् इल्वाऴ्क्कै आऱ्ऱिऩ् पुऱत्ताऱ्ऱिल्
पोऒय्प् पॆऱुव तॆवऩ्? ४६

गार्हस्थ्य-जीवनं येन
धर्म्ये मार्गे प्रवर्त्येते ।
किं वा प्रयोजनं तस्य
वानप्रस्थादिना पथा ॥ ४६॥ +++(4)+++

47. Is there any gain greater in resorting to other orders of life than by pursuing the right path of the householder?

6. அறத்தாற்றின் இல்வாழ்க்கை யாற்றின் புறத்தாற்றிற்
போஒய்ப் பெறுவது எவன்.
Who turns from righteous family
To be a monk, what profits he? 46

46 धर्म मार्ग पर यदि गृही, चलायगा निज धर्म ।
ग्रहण करे वह किसलिये, फिर अपराश्रम धर्म ॥

46. धर्ममार्गदल्लि (सस्मार्गदल्लि) कुटुम्ब जीवन नडसिदरॆ, बेरॆ मार्गगळिन्द होगि पडॆयुवुदादरू एनु?

अऱत्ताऱ्ऱिऩ् इल्वाऴ्क्कै आऱ्ऱिऩ् पुऱत्ताऱ्ऱिल्
पोऒय्प् पॆऱुव तॆवऩ्? ४६

इयल्बिऩाऩ् इल्वाऴ्क्कै वाऴ्बवऩ् ऎऩ्पाऩ्
मुयल्वारुळ् ऎल्लाम् तलै। ४७

धर्मेण वर्त्मना यस् तु
गार्हस्थ्यम् उपसेवते ।
मार्गन्तरोपजीविभ्यः
स प्रशस्तो निगद्यते ॥ ४७॥

Foremost among those who strive for release,
Are the householders leading a righteous life. *

47. iyalpiṉāṉ ilvāḻkkai vāḻpavaṉ eṉpāṉ muyalvāruḷ ellām talai. 22
48. The life of the householder is far greater than that of one in the path of renunciation.

7. இயல்பினான் இல்வாழ்க்கை வாழ்பவன் என்பான்
முயல்வாருள் எல்லாம் தலை
Of all who strive for bliss, the great
Is he who leads the married state. 47

47 भरण गृहस्थी धर्म का, जो भी करे गृहस्थ ।
साधकगण के मध्य वह, होता है अग्रस्थ ॥

47. (ऎल्लरू मॆच्चुव हागॆ) धर्मगुणदिन्द कुटुम्ब जीवनवन्नु नडॆसुववनु, (बाळिन श्रेयस्सिगागि) तपस्सु मॊदलाद हलवु तॆरद प्रयत्नगळन्नु नडसुववरॊळगॆल्ला मिगिलादवनु.

इयल्बिऩाऩ् इल्वाऴ्क्कै वाऴ्बवऩ् ऎऩ्पाऩ्
मुयल्वारुळ् ऎल्लाम् तलै। ४७

आऱ्ऱिऩ् ऒऴुक् कि अऱऩिऴुक्का इल्वाऴ् क्कै
नोऱ्पारिऩ् नोऩ्मै उडैत्तु। ४८

कारयित्वा परैर् धर्मे
धर्म-मार्गावलम्बिनः ।
जीवनं च गृग-स्थस्य
श्लाघ्यते यति-जीवनात् ॥ ४८॥

48. āṟṟiṉ oḻukki, aṟaṉ iḻukkā ilvāḻkkai nōṟpāriṉ nōṉmai uṭaittu.
49. The householder who keeps others in the right path and himself does not deviate from his, does greater penance than the anchorite.

8. ஆற்றின் ஒழுக்கி அறனிழுக்கா இல்வாழ்க்கை
நோற்பாரின் நோன்மை உடைத்து
Straight in virtue, right in living
Make men brighter than monks praying. 48

48 अच्युत रह निज धर्म पर, सबको चला सुराह ।
क्षमाशील गार्हस्थ्य है, तापस्य से अचाह ॥

48. इतररन्नु सस्मार्गदल्लि हच्चि, तानू धर्ममार्गदिन्द विमुखनागदॆ इरुववन कुटुम्ब जीवनवु, तपस्विगळिगिन्त हॆच्चु तपोबलवुळ्ळद्दु.

आऱ्ऱिऩ् ऒऴुक् कि अऱऩिऴुक्का इल्वाऴ् क्कै
नोऱ्पारिऩ् नोऩ्मै उडैत्तु। ४८

अऱऩ् ऎऩप् पट्टदे इल्-वाऴ्क्कै अह्दुम्
पिऱऩ् +++(=इतरः →यतिः)+++ पऴिप्पत्+++(=गर्हणायाः)+++ इल्ल् आयिऩ् नऩ्ऱु। ४९

स एव धर्म-शब्दार्थो
यद् +धि गार्हस्थ्य-जीवनम् ।
गृहस्थ-धर्म एवात्र
धर्म-शब्देन कथ्यते ॥ ४९॥

Domestic life is proclaimed virtuous
And it is praiseworthy if free from blame. *

४९. There are two different renderings of this couplet. The word “अह्दुम्” is taken to mean “especially or that too” and also as “the other one also”. The other one is obviously a reference to monastic or ascetic life. (Satguru Subramuniyaswami), ( Shuddhananda Bharatiar), (G.U. Pope) and (W.H. Drew and J. Lazarus) have followed the latter interpretation. (P.S. Sundaram), (K. Kannan), (K. Krishnaswamy & Vijaya Ramkumar), (J. Narayanaswamy), (V.V.S. Aiyar), (K. Krishnaswamy & Vijaya Ramkumar) and (K.R. Srinivasa Iyengar) have translated the couplet the other way. (Satguru Subramuniyaswami) has translated as: “Domestic life is called virtue, but the other one is also good if lived beyond blame”. *

49. aṟaṉ eṉappaṭṭatē ilvāḻkkai; aḵtum piṟaṉ paḻippatu il āyiṉ naṉṟu.
50. What is Dharma but the life of the householder? There is no greater life if it is free from reproach.

9. அறனெனப் பட்டதே இல்வாழ்க்கை அஃதும்
பிறன்பழிப்பது இல்லாயின் நன்று
Home-life and virtue, are the same;
Which spotless monkhood too can claim. 49

49 जीवन ही गार्हस्थ्य का, कहलाता है धर्म ।
अच्छा हो यदि वह बना, जन-निन्दा बिन धर्म ॥

49. धर्मवॆन्दॆनिसिकॊळ्ळुवुदे गृहधर्म ; अदू परर अषकीर्ति, निन्दॆगळिगॆ गुरियागदिद्दरॆ मत्तष्टु शोभिसुत्तदॆ.

अऱऩ् ऎऩप् पट्टदे इल्वाऴ्क्कै अह्दुम्
पिऱऩ्पऴिप्प तिल्लायिऩ् नऩ्ऱु। ४९

वैयत्तुळ् वाऴ्वाङ्गु वाऴ्बवऩ् वाऩ्उनऱ्युम्
तॆय्वत्तुळ् वैक्कप् पडुम्। ५०

धर्म-मार्गम् अन्-उल्लङ्घय
गृहस्थो यदि जीवति ।
देववत् पूजितः सोऽत्र
देव-लोकं ततो व्रजेत् ॥ ५०॥

He who lives his life in this world as he should,
Ranks with the gods in the heaven.

50. vaiyattuḷ vāḻvāṅku vāḻpavaṉ vāṉ uṟaiyum
teyvattuḷ vaikkappaṭum.

50. He who lives the true life of the householder on earth becomes one among the gods in Heaven.

10. வையத்துள் வாழ்வாங்கு வாழ்பவன் வானுறையும்
தெய்வத்துள் வைக்கப் படும்
He is a man of divine worth
Who lives in ideal home on earth. 50

50 इस जग में है जो गृही, धर्मनिष्ठ मतिमान ।
देवगणों में स्वर्ग के, पावेगा सम्मान ॥

50. ई लोकदल्लि बाळबेकाद रीतियल्लि धर्मदिन्द नडॆयुववनु स्वर्गवासिगळाद देवतॆगळ नडुवॆ शोभिसल्पडुवनु. (बसवेश्वर वचन : इल्लि सल्लुवरु अल्लियू सल्लुवरय्या. )
