  • Proportions of Narasiṃha’s Face: Their face is like that of a lion, and the rest of the body is human. The overall height from head to foot should be made in the saviṃśati-śatāṅgula (one hundred and twenty finger-units) system. The head is three units (mātras); from the head to the eye line is six units; from there to the snout (ghoṇā) is four units; from there to the mouth (āsya) is two units; and the lower lip (adhara) is two finger-units (aṅgulas). The distance from the eyes to the eyebrows is one unit. The rest up to the hairline is the forehead. The width of the forehead is nine units. The distance between the eyes (dṛgantara) is nine units. The eye length is three units, and its width is half of that. The pupil (kanīnikā) is one barleycorn (yava) wide. The white of the eye (sita-maṇḍala) is ten barleycorns in length and width. In the center is the iris/pupil (jyotis) of one barleycorn. The vision is one-eighth of the width. The upper and lower parts of the sides are white. The upper eyelid is three barleycorns. The lower eyelid is two barleycorns. The eyebrows are twelve units long and are shaped like a crescent/tail. The mouth width is ten units, and its opening is four units. The teeth are four in number, prominent, and half a unit in width. The tongue is six units long and two units wide. The distance from the mouth corner to the cheek is one unit. The snout length is four units. Below the ear-base is the cheek, which is six units. The distance from the eye corner (apāṅga) to the ear-base is five units. The ear measures three and a half units in height and one unit in width, shaped like a boar’s ear (sūkara-karṇa). The face should be terrifying (raudra-vaktra), with manes (saṭā) and sharp eyes. Other body parts should be made according to the rules of Varāha.

  • Iconography of Girija-Narasiṃha: Girija-Narasiṃha is seated on a throne, with His right leg extended and His left leg bent. He has four arms, holds the conch and disc, is white like the jasmine flower or moon (kunda-indu-dhavala-prabha), wears red garments, is adorned with all ornaments, and has a crown shaped like a basket (karaṇḍa-mukuṭa). His right hand is in the gesture of protection (abhaya), and His left hand rests on His hip or thigh. On His right, Goddess Śrī is seated, with Her left leg bent and Her right leg extended, holding a lotus in Her left hand, with Her right hand resting on the seat, golden-hued, and adorned with all ornaments. On His left, Goddess Earth (Mahī) is seated, with Her right leg bent and Her left leg extended, holding a blue lotus in Her right hand, with Her left hand resting on the seat, green-hued, and adorned with all ornaments. Alternatively, Narasiṃha can be seated on the throne with His left leg extended and His right leg bent, with His right hand extended like an elephant’s trunk (gaja-hasta) over His knee, His left hand placed on His thigh, holding the conch and disc, accompanied by or without the Goddesses. Or, the Lord Narasiṃha alone can be seated on a lotus pedestal with both His feet crossed (in padmāsana or vīrāsana), or in the utkuṭikāsana posture (seated with knees raised), with His thighs and knees bound by a yoga band (yoga-paṭṭa), adorned with all ornaments, having four arms, holding the conch and disc, with His other two hands extended over His knees.

  • Iconography of Sthauṇaja-Narasiṃha: Sthauṇaja-Narasiṃha (Pillar-born Narasiṃha) is seated on a throne with steps, with His left leg bent and His right leg extended. He has four arms, holds the conch and disc, His right hand is in the gesture of protection (abhaya), and His left hand is placed on His thigh. He has broad shoulders, manes, sharp tusks and eyes, a terrifying appearance, a white complexion, wears red garments, and is adorned with all ornaments. To pacify His anger, on His right and left sides, Goddesses Śrī and Bhū, and Prahlāda in a worshipful posture should be placed. On His right is Nārada holding a lute (vīṇā). On the surrounding walls, the world-protectors (lokapāla) starting with Indra from the east to the northeast should be depicted in a worshipful posture.

  • Iconography of Yānaka-Narasiṃha: Yānaka-Narasiṃha is seated on the shoulders of Garuḍa or on the lap of Ādiśeṣa, shaded by the five hoods of the serpent as an umbrella, has four arms, holds the conch and disc, and is adorned with all ornaments. Alternatively, he can be depicted with eight or sixteen arms, with a terrifying appearance, in the act of tearing open the demon’s belly, representing the wrathful Sthauṇaja form.

  • Consecration of Narasiṃha (Nārasiṃha-pratiṣṭhā): I shall now describe the specific consecration of Narasiṃha: setting up the sacrificial hall as before, with the bedding altar in the center and the five fires around it. Offering the chanter’s praise at the primary Āhavanīya fire: invoke the Lord reciting the mantras “Nārasiṃhaṃ taponāthaṃ mahāviṣṇuṃ mahābalam” for the Girija form, and invoke the Goddesses as before. For the Sthauṇaja form, invoke reciting “Nārasiṃhaṃ taponāthaṃ bhaktavatsalaṃ anantabalam”, and invoke the Goddesses, world-protectors, and others as before. Invoke the mount Garuḍa reciting “Sāmavedaṃ śaiṣikaṃ dvijarājam”, and invoke Prahlāda reciting “Prahlādaṃ daityapatiṃ viṣṇubhaktaṃ mahābalam”. Having offered the juṣṭa and svāhā libations, offer one hundred and eight oblations with the mantra “Yo vā nṛsiṃhaḥ”. All other rites are identical to the general consecration. Worship the stationary deity with His specific form-mantras and eight services, and the processional icon combining the form-mantras with the sixteen services. Perform the bathing and festivals as for Viṣṇu.

  • Iconography of Vāmana: Now, the description of Vāmana: he is made in the pañcatāla (five-span, i.e., 60 finger-units) system, has two arms, holds an umbrella and a staff, wears a loincloth (kaupīna), has a tuft of hair (śikhā), holds a book, wears a girdle (mekhalā), a sacred thread (upavīta), and a black antelope skin (kṛṣṇājina). He holds a purifying blade of grass (pavitra-pāṇi), is in the form of a young boy, and possesses brahmic splendor (brahma-varcasvin). His body proportions are as follows: from the crown to the hairline is half a unit; from the hairline to the eye line is three units and two barleycorns; from there to the snout is three units and one barleycorn; from there to the chin is two units and two barleycorns; the neck is two units; from the neck to the heart is six units; from the heart to the navel is six units; and from the navel to the genitals is six units. The thighs are twelve units; the knees, two units; the shanks, twelve units; and the feet height is two units. The foot length is twelve units. The face width is ten units. The eye is one unit and a half. The eyebrow measures the same. The other features of the head, chest, and limbs should be carved in proportion using the pañcatāla measurement.

  • Iconography of Trivikrama: Trivikrama is of three types according to His steps across the three worlds:

  1. For the stride across the earth (bhūloka), His foot is raised to the level of the knee.
  2. For the stride across the mid-space (antarikṣa), His foot is raised to the level of the navel.
  3. For the stride across the heavens (svargaloka), His foot is raised to the level of the forehead. His leg is raised upwards. Having chosen one of these forms, he should make the deity with eight or four arms in the twenty-four span (caturviṃśati-tāla) system. In the eight-armed form, His right hands hold the disc, arrow, and sword, and His left hands hold the conch, bow (śārṅga), plow, and pestle. In the four-armed form, His right hands hold the disc and show the gesture of protection (abhaya), and His left hands hold the conch and are extended parallel to His raised leg. His right leg is planted firmly, and His left leg is raised and extended. He is dark-hued, wears red garments, is adorned with all ornaments, with the wish-fulfilling tree (kalpa-druma) behind Him. Indra holds the umbrella over Him. On both sides, Javana and Jaleśa hold fly-whisks. Above Him, the Sun is on the right, the Moon on the left, and Sanaka and Sanatkumāra are also depicted. Above His raised leg, Brahmā is depicted holding and washing the Lord’s foot with both hands. From that stream, the white-hued Goddess Gaṅgā is shown down to her navel with her hands folded in supplication. At the foot, Namuci is shown whirling, and on the left, Śukra is shown creating obstacles. Garuḍa is shown striking him with his fist. On the right, Vāmana is shown, and beside him is the golden-hued Bali, adorned with all ornaments, accompanied by his wife, joyfully lifting a golden water-pot with both hands to pour water. Above them, Jāmbavān is depicted beating a drum. The processional icon of Trivikrama must be made as the four-armed Viṣṇu only, according to the rules of Bhṛgu.
  • Consecration of Vāmana and Trivikrama: I shall now describe the specific consecration of Vāmana and Trivikrama: in the middle of the sacrificial hall, set up the bedding altar and the five fires around it, and also the Pauṇḍarīka fire. Some say it can be done with a single fire. Invoking them in a single water-pot (eka-kumbha), place them on a single bedding altar. At the primary Anvāhāryā fire, offer the chanter’s praise: invoke the deity reciting “Trivikramaṃ trilokeśaṃ viṣṇuṃ sarvādhāram” for Trivikrama, and “Vāmanaṃ varadaṃ viṣṇuṃ kāśyapaṃ aditi-priyam” for Vāmana. For other deities, perform the invocation with their specific form-mantras. Offer one hundred and eight oblations with the mantra “Yo vā trimūrtiḥ”. Perform all other rites as for Viṣṇu. Worship Vāmana and Trivikrama in the daily worship with their form-mantras and eight services, and the processional icon combining the form-mantras with the sixteen services. Perform the bathing and festivals as before.
