BhUta srotas misc

The bhUtasrotas specifies that the practitioner of the bhUta-tantra-s should wear a bracelet that makes ghosts tremble. It is described thus:

puShpa-lohamayaM divyaM
bIjAkSharair alaMkR^itaM || vAma-haste tu kaTakaM
dhArayet bhUta-kaMpanaM |

The bracelet or bangle is said to be made of puShpa-loha, worn on the left arm and stamped with bIjAkShara-s.

What is puShpaloha? It is a rare word that is primarily only found in a few shaiva tantra-s and several times in the bauddha ma~njushrIya mUlakalpa. There, in addition to bracelets, tridents and swords are also made from it. It also suggests a connection with the gaNa of rudra named lohaka, who is prominent in the bhUtasrotas.

We posit that puShpaloha is a Skt term equivalent to bloom iron – the porous, spongy mass of iron obtained by the reduction of iron oxides by carbon monoxide in the old iron smelting process.
