“Aristotle holds that initiates [of the Mysteries] do not learn something [mathein] but must rather undergo something [pathein] and be rearranged [diatethēnai], that is, to become fit [epitēdeious],” (frag. 15 Rose).
- One notes that Synesius (who preserves the fragment) uses the technical Neoplatonic term epitēdeiotēs, “fitness” for participation in a principle. One wonders how close this might be to what Aristotle said.
