veda continuation claims

veda deficiencies

Incompleteness

Irrelevant bits

  • On vaidika (kAmya) karma-s vis-a-vis mokSha and pravRtti-dharma: 2.46॥ [2.46 note]

Continuity with later literature

The development of brAhmaNa-s continued into shrauta and gRhyasUtra-s. The latter are terse, but the former is not. The oldest shrauta-sUtra - baudhAyana is long like the brAhmaNa-s causing him to be called a pravachanakAra. A late brAhmaNa - the vAdhUlasa anvAkhyAna is indeed termed an anvAkhyAna.

Veda-Equality claims

Within sectarian limits, some non-vaidika shAstra-s may be considered equal to the veda-s in authority (especially with regards to upAsana if not dharma).

  • pAncharAtra-Agama by vaiShNava-s.
  • Some verses which praise the purANa-s and itihAsa-s (in their original form, which isn’t available to us) as equivalent to veda-s are taken quite literally for rhetorical and practical purposes.
  • Eg. itihAsa and mahApurANa are Apaurusheya (= Ishvara-kRta) according to Gaudiya Vaishnava philosophy propagated by Shrila Jiva Gosvamipada in his celebrated 16th Century CE work ‘Tattva-sandarbhah’ & by Shri Vallabhacharya in Tattvarthadipanibandhah.

rAmAyaNa case

rAmAyaNa was said to be created in order to elaborate on the veda-s. This effort was expressed in several ways:

  • several shloka-s in rAmAyaNa and commentaries
  • noting the use of the letters of the gAyatrI mantra at regular shloka intervals
  • creation of works like mantrarAmAyaNa (archive)
