प्रियेषु & - सुभगाया भावः सौभाग्यं good fortune. Beauty has for its fruit good fortune as regards the husband or a "

love’ i. if a woman’s beauty attracts her husband and makes him love her then only that can be called beauty; otherwise it is useless, howsoever great it may be in the eyes of others. Cf. infra - स्त्रीणt प्रियालोकफलो हि वेशः । VHH 29, (61.) 2. भवन्ध्यरूप - The negation here is prominent ( प्रसज्यमतिषेध ), and so it should not have been compounded; soo our note on Rag. 1. or Meg. II. 2. But according to the Bhashyakara such नन् may be compounded मसज्यप्रतिषेधपि न समास इष्यते । or the coup. way be taken as न वन्ध्यमवन्ध्यं, अवन्ध्यं च तट्टपं च तस्य भावः । 81 quoted in Sar K as an instance of तपश्वरणादिजन्मा नैमित्तिकानुरागः । ★ SI. 3. गिरीशo Some read as गिरीशं प्रति सकमानसां in which case प्रति is " कर्मप्रवचनीय governing गिरीश. Whon the whole is taken as a comp. fa is an Upasarga after which is changed to पू. गिरीश -the lord of the mountain Kailasn. गिरियां supra. 1. 60. See note on 83 (Sl.) 4. मनीषिता: Such as the mind would long for, would satisfy the cravings of the mind. Mark the Samdhi (मनस् + ईषित); see.com. –Lit. where is the one-where is the other; hence by Kâku (intonation) this means-how great is the distance between the two; the two how uuequal ! The repetition of shows the great disparity between the two. Cf. सूर्यप्रभवो वंशक चाल्पविषया मतिः Rag. I. ; क भूपतीनां चरितं क जन्तवः । Kir. I. 6; also infra. 73. पतत्रिन - पतति इति from पत् + अत्रिन्. Cf. परुषस्तपोविशेषस्तव पुनरङ्गं शिरीषसुकुमारम् । व्यवसितमेतत्कठिनं पार्वति तदुष्करमिति प्रतिभाति ॥ Par. P. III. 16. इति स्वतनयावाक्यं श्रुत्वा तु पितने मुने । ऊचतुर्दुःखितो भूखा बाष्पगदया गिरा । तस्मात्त्रं भक्तियुक्तेन पूजयस्व गृहे शिवम् । उमा गच्छ बनं घोरं सर्वविघ्नास्पदं सदा ॥ 8’ P. Sl. 5 श्रवेच्छां - This is proferable to the other readings as it explains why her mother failed to dissuade her from going to practies penance. ईप्सित P. P. p. of the Desid. of आपू. निम्नाभिमुखं - Dissolve निम्नस्याभिमुखम् । प्रतीपर्यत - A Denomi. verb from प्रतीप. (61.) 6. मनोरथज्ञं - Who knew her cherished desire and who was therefore expected to grant the permission readily. ( 75 ) मनस्विनी aftanf-of sound judgment, thoughtful, i. e., who knew when and how to make a request.

SI. 7. अनुरूपा० - रूपस्य योग्यः सदृशो वा अनुरूपः अभिनिवेशa determinate purpose, firm resolution; or it may mean strong attachment, love, as in Sak. III. सखि दिष्ट्यानुरूपस्तंभिनिवेशः । The first meaning, however, will better suit the contoxt. गरीयसा - exalted; according to some मातुरपि पूज्यत्वाद गरीयसा ( but this does not socm to he intended ) शिखण्डिमत्abounding in peacocks. This has no special propriety here, being merely nsed for alliteration, like गरीयसा above. Cf. however-Ava, मयूराः निस्सङ्का भवन्ति । सङ्गदर्शनेन समाधिभङ्गो भवति । According to some this was the original name of the peak ( cf. गुत्रकूट &०. ). Cf. गौरी विजयया सख्या जयया च सुनेत्रया । साकं सखीभ्यां मुमुखी सा गौरीशिखरं ययी । चकार वसतिं यस्मादोरीशिखरमुच्यते ॥ S . P . (61.) 8. साहारं - Some take this as सा आहार ( विमुच्य ) connecting विलोल० with वल्कले; but then the epithet विलोल० has no propriety अद्दार्यनिश्चया–and hence, at the time of putting her resolution into practice, she quietly removed her ornaments and put on the bark garment यष्टि - the strings of pearls forming the necklaco. बालारुण - Some separate this as बाला अरुण. संहति–close fittings; close contact with the body. Sls. 8-12 give the usual accoutrements of a aqftra. See notes on sl. 30 further on. सरसिजमनुविद्धं SI. 9. प्रसिद्धै: –Decorated. सशैवला० -Cf. शैवलेनापि रम्यं मधुरमपि हिमांशीक्ष्म लक्ष्मी तनोति । इयमधिकमनोज्ञा वल्कलेमापि तन्वी किमि हि मधुराणां मण्डनं नाकतीनाम् ॥ Bak I. 18. Also न रम्यमाहार्यमपेक्षते गुणं; रम्याणां विकृतिरपि श्रियं तनोति | Kir. IV. 23; VII. 5. | sl. 10. त्रिगुणांत्रिगुणाः प्रदक्षिणा मेखलाः | Prachetas; मोअी त्रिवृत्समा] श्लक्ष्णा कार्या Mamns, II. 42. तत्पूर्वनिबद्धा - Fastened thero for the first time then; and hence its harsh tonch caused horripilation every moment.

(Sl.) 48 दिवाकरा०-Those parts of the body on which ornaments are usually put are sun-burnt शशाङ्कः - with thy lustrous complexion palod. 4 (Sl.) 49, मौभाग्य - The good fortune lies in being loved by Parvati. लक्ष्य - The mark or object of sight. आत्मीयंआत्मन इदं; fr. आत्मन् + छः ( ईय ). Sl. 50. वरं तं . - Cf. किमाकासि सुश्रोणि कथयस्व ममायतः । कुतूहलेन शुश्रूषुरहं तव नगेन्द्रजे । 8. 1. ૐ (Sl.) 51. प्रविश्य - Having entered into or penetrated her mind; having divined her inmost thoughts. मनोगतं सा &This shows the modesty of Pár. (as became a high-born maiden ऍन कुलत्राणां परपुरुषैः सह साक्षात्संभाषणं न कर्तव्यमिति गम्यते Com. of s’ P.). The S. P. thus accounts for this - एषा गिरिसुता विम सती कमललोचना । वाचं परस्य साक्षान्न ददाति भवसविना ॥ अथ वयस्यां - This was Jayá. वयसा तुल्या वयस्या; fr. वयस् + यत् by नवयोधर्म &c. Pán. JV. 4. 91. (Sl.) 52. वर्णिन् – वर्णः प्रशस्तिः अम्यास्तीति वर्णिन्; Brahmachärin; a religious student. The aff. ga is added to qui in this sense alone; otherwise aofara; seo Kâs’iká on the Sútra quoted by Malli. (Pâŋ. V. 2. 134). In his com. on Kir. I. 1. Malli. explains प्रशस्ति 18 स्मरणं कीर्तन केलिः मेक्षणं गुह्यभाषणं । सङ्कल्पोष्यवसायश्व क्रियानिर्वृतिरेव च । एतन्मैथुनमष्टाङ्गं प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः । एतदष्टविधमैथुनाभावः प्रशस्तिः । सधी - साप्नोति परकार्यमिति; one who accomplishes another’s businoes; hence Pirvati’s friend itly addresses him as साधु ( when he had said तदर्धभांगन &. ). (Sl.) 53. चतुर्दिगीशान - चतसृणां दिशां समाहारः चतुर्दिक् तस्य ईशाम् । Malli. takes the comp. as उत्तरपदलोपी ( शाकपार्थिवादि ); then it will have to be dissolved as चतुर्दिकसहिता दिशः चतुर्दिशः तासामीशान्; but this is inaccurate as that will include Siva himself, (83) the lord of tho North-east अधिश्रियः - अधिका ( अधिगता वा ) श्री : येषां (यैव ); preeminently rich or refulgent. (Sl.) having destroyed built in the sky, (64.) हुङ्कार – This is the weapon of Siva as Rudra. quft-S’iva; also called fagrift, from his the three cities of gold, silver and iron, the ethereal region and on earth by the demon Maya and presided over by himself, Vidyunmâlí and Târakâsura. To achieve this feat S’iva had to stand for one thousand years awaiting the coming together of the cities; cf. Mah. Bhar. त्रिपुरस्य वधार्थाय स्थाणुः प्रहरतां वरः । स्थानं महिश्वरं कृत्वा दिव्यमप्रतिमं प्रभुः । अतिष्ठत्स्थाणुभूतः स सहस्रं परिवत्सरान् । यदा त्रीणि समेतानि अन्तरिक्षे पुराणि च। त्रिप त्रिशल्येन तदा तानि विभेद सः ॥ Sou also B. P. VII. 10. 53-68; 8. I. व्यायतपातं ie the arrow made a deep wound into Parvati’s heart. Sl. 60 ललाटिका - Fr. ललाट + कन् ( क ) by कर्णललाटात्कन् Hagit Pâņ. IV. 3. 65. To allay the fever caused by her love-torment sandal-paste was applied to her forehead; but that too brought her no relief. cf. शश्वद्र्यातचन्दनाद्विपवनस्पर्श न संमन्यते शय्यां पल्लवकल्पितां न सहते चन्द्रापं निन्दति । नोवा पद्मपलाशनिमिततनुमावारमाक्षम्यत सा नीहारशिलातले शृणु परं तापातुरा वर्तते ॥ Par. P. IV. 4. SI. 56 उपात्तवर्णे - वर्ण properly letters; hence the arrangem ment of words in a song;-begun to be sung in due order. (Sl.) 57. त्रिभाग० -So Malli, She got a little sleep but only to be broken the next momont when a fourth or 3rd part of the night remained. अलक्ष्यनाकू Sho uttered words but without there being any person present to whom the words could be addressed. SI. quoted in the S. D, as an instance of 1 (one of the ten conditions induced by lovo-affection when intense; अलक्ष्यवाक्पलापः स्याच्चेतसो भ्रमणादृशम् ). ✪ SI. 58. भावस्थं –This is the special reason why she had first claim on his attention स्वहस्तो - Drawing the beloved’s picture is one of the four ways by which lovers in separation boguile longing. of वियोगावस्थातु प्रियजनरादृक्षानुभवनं ततश्चित्रं कर्म स्वपनसमये दर्शनमपि । तदवस्पृष्टानामुपगतवतो स्पर्शनमपि प्रतीकारः कामव्यचितमनसा कांपि कथितः ॥ मुग्धया - Tho innocent one, who in her love-mania did not know that it would be of little avail to address a picture. रहसि in private. Malli. remarks सखीमात्र समक्षम् but this is not necossary. The friends might have overheard her ejaculations at times. ( 84 ) (Sl.) 61. gada gia the showerer; Indra, originally regarded as the god of rain (and then as the god of wealth, showerer of gifts; see Rg. I. 2, 7, 8). Har-Properly furrow or line of a plough-share; hence ploughed land; tilled ground तदवग्रहक्षताम् - Malli proposes to take तद् separately as the object of a . But this does not seem to be natural. The poet intends the whole as a comp. word. तद् is put in for the sake of force. The friend wishes to bring to the ascotic’s notice the obstinacy of bothIndra and S′iva-in withholding their favours from the ground and Parvati who न are quite innocent in the matter. not an evil of their own seeking. Both are sufferers but it is (Sl.) 62. -Ilonest intentions; innocent thoughts. नैष्ठिक - निष्ठा मरणं तत्पर्यन्तं ( उपनयनोत्तरं ) ब्रह्मचर्येण तिष्ठति इति & lifelong religious student who lives at his Guru’s house and observes the vow of celibacy. •g:—the handsome ascetic; or gezy may mean by Lakshaṇå Яg. Malli. takes this in the sense of Vilâsin probably because S’abkara had come there as a lover as suggested by fagiego:; the ascetic was rejoiced at heart to see how deep Pârvati’s love for him was, but he betrayed no sign of joy. Sl. 63. -The comp. must be dissolved as Malli. has done it. Here is the 3 (part) and g the Avayavin. In a Karm comp. such as färga, the 3797 and its a are identical. But in this case 30 and gea are not identical; they may, however, be so regarded metaphorically, through their relation of Avayava and Avayavin, as remarked by Vâmana; sec com. For a fuller discussion of the point see onr notes on 6’ák. p. 92. अवेस्तनया-This has its significance. Although the daughter of the mountain and therefore farfar, she was so much overpowered by emotion that she could not for a long time adjust her words and make an effort to speak. (Sl.) 65. विदितः - Malli says मया; it may as well be लया or f:. With the meaning will be-I know S’afkara as one who once insulted you by ignoring your beauty and burn. ing Madana. :-ironical, waqfà &c.—I cannot follow you in this; I cannot advise you such a course to follow. Cf. आलेपो भसितं विभूषितमहिवसः पितॄणां वने वेतालाः परिचारकाः प्रतिदिनं ( 85 ) वृत्तिश्व भिक्षामयी । इत्थं यस्य शुभेतराणि चरितान्याख्यान्ति सर्व जनास्तस्मि न्मौग्ध्यवशान्मतिस्तव रुचि बध्नाति किं श्रमहे ॥ अन्यच्च । जगत्रयीलोचनबालचन्द्रिका कुलस्य रत्नं भवती के भूभृतः । क कृत्तिवासाः पितृकानने वसन्नमङ्गलाancfafediaa: | Pár. P. IV. 12, 13. (Sl.) 66. अवस्तु - Here अ has the sense of अप्राशस्त्य: uot the proper or worthy person. The negative particle has six Senses: -तत्सादृश्यमभावश्च तदन्यत्वं तदल्पता । अमाशस्त्यं विरोधश्व नञर्थाः षट् प्रकीर्तिताः ॥ निर्बन्ध persistence in कौतुक—the nuptial thread tied round the wrist ; soe Rag. VIII. 1. वलयी f. अस्मिन्नगृह्यत पिनाकभृता सलीलमावद्भवेपथुरधीरविलोचनायाः । विन्यस्तमङ्गलमहौषधिरोवरायाः स्वस्तोरगप्रतिसरेण करेण पाणिः || Kir. V. 33. SI. 67. कलहंसलक्षणम् -The figuros of swans painted or smpressed upon it with Gorochaná or turmeric गजाजिनंIt is said that S’iva, when he killed Gajâsura. danced with his body covered with the skin stripped off from the body of the demon and wet with blood, and wore it afterwards as a trophy, For further information see note on the word at Meg. I, 38. SI. 8. चतुष्कम् चत्वारो अथवा यस्य; fr. चतुर + क (कन्) added to form a name ( ÉĦTI); see Pâŋ. V. 1. 58. A hall resting on four pillars : s saloon. This is contrasted with the ceme- Tery grounds, the favourito resorts of Siva. Sl. 69. त्रिनेत्रवक्षः सुलभं - See Malli; it is better, however, to take the whole as one comp. word. The construction, too, would thus become simple; तवापि अस्मिन्… स्तनद्वये त्रिनेत्रवक्षः सुलभं चिताभस्मरजः पदं करिष्यति &c. change of न to or in त्रिनेत्र S’is’, XIII. 27; but as the There is no objection to the (by पूर्वपदात्संज्ञायाम् ); see Malli on word is generally written as त्रिनेत्र Malli, defends it by including it in the game group; see com. on VII. 60 infra अयुक्तरूपं - अतिशयन युक्तं युक्तरूपं तत्र भवतीत्यo Dow see Malli. हरिचन्दनं -हरेर्विष्णोरिन्द्रस्य वा चन्दनम् । Mr. Des’apaude quotes the following verse from Padmapurâņa घष्टं च तुलसीकाष्ठं कर्पूरागुरुयोगतः । अथवा केशरैयेोज्यं हरिचन्दनमुच्यते ॥ (Sl.) 70 पुरत - e will inevitably follow just as you are married. वृद्धोक्षः - वृद्धश्वासी उक्षा चः उक्षन् is changed to उक्ष at the end of a Karm by Pan V. 4. 77. महाजनः - includes the idea of many and good or respectable; sec Malli on न लक्ष्यामास -महाजनानां शिरांसि नैवोद्धतिमाजगाम । Sis’. III. 28. स्मेर smiling, from स्मि + ₹, by नमिकम्पिस्म्यजतकमहिंतदीपों रः । Pán. III. 2. 167. र is added कर्तरि नम्रः, कम्पः, स्मेरः, अजस्रं (जासेर्न पूर्वः क्रियासातत्ये वर्तते Sid Kan) &c. (86) (Sl.) 71 पिनाकिनः - कपालिनः 1 7 see sl. 78. i. e. which S’iva holds on his crest. कला च सा- Sl quoted in K. P. VII. as remarked by Malli., to show that when the sense can be easily known the relative pronoun may be left understood. Here ær refers to the digit of the moon which is well known; It is again quoted as an instance of the fault = or the absence of the syntactical order of words. Here the proper position of is immediately after ; for it is the word and not लोक that is meant to be conjoined with कला as an object to be deplored. Also quoted in S. D. in this connection with the remark अत्र त्वमित्यनन्तरमेव चकारो युक्तः । नेत्रकौमुदी - A beautiful woman is often compared to moon-light (on account of her complexion); hence the giver of delight or the cause of joy. तू त्वं कौमुदी नयनयां : Uttar मम तु यदियं याता लोके विलोचनचन्द्रिका; 41 $iggi azaġĤaa: gscar: Mál. Mád. I. 36. 34; Rag. VI. 85. SI. 72. विरूपाक्षं -Tho eyes are so deformed; why talk of the other limbs then ( सर्वाङ्गप्रधानं चक्षुश्व यस्य विरूपं तस्येतरानं किं वक्तव्यमित्यर्थः Cddyota ) : Bl. quoted in the K. P. VII as an instance of अविसृष्टविधेयांश or the prominent non-mention of the predicate. Here (in अलक्ष्यजन्मता ) unknowability is intended to be predicated of birth; but the predicate 8 is subordinated as it is compounded. To avoid this the readings अलक्षिता जनिः, अलक्षितं जनुः are suggested. वरेषु &c. -Cf. कुलेन कान्त्या वयसा नवेन गुणैश्व तैस्तैर्विनयप्रधानः । स्वमात्मनस्तुल्यमनुं वृणीष्व &c. Rag. VI. 79. Sl. 73. क्व क्व - Soo SI. 4. वैदिकी-49 ordained in the Veda; विदे भवा; fr. वेद + ठञ् ( इक) added by the rule ‘अध्यात्मादिभ्यश्व ’ the अध्यात्मादि being an आकृतिगण. Cf तत्परित्यज्य गिरिशमुपेन्द्र वा शचीपतिम् । वस्य त्वं विशालाक्षि वरयोग्यो तु तो तव ॥ 8. I इमशानशूल- ‘. I. which is used for unholy purposes only, criminals being impaled on it, while the gq is used exclusively for holy purposes. This must have insulted Pârvatî the most. (Sl.) 74. प्रतिकूल -प्रतीपं कूलात्पतिकूलं lit against the current; hence in opposition to one’s wishes. तिर्यगाहिते -i.. she cast at him a look of contempt. (Sl.) 75. परमार्थतः परमार्थः the highest sense or object; hence the truth or reality. अलोकसामान्यं-न विद्यते लोक सामान्य यस्य; Avachûri. मन्दा: - the dull-minded who cannot know the real nature of great men’s actions; of दह्यमानाः सुतीत्रेण नीचाः परयोनिना । अशक्तास्तत्पदं गन्तुं ततो निन्दां प्रकुर्वते ॥ (87) (Sl.) 76. विपत्प्रतीकार ० -विपदः प्रतीकारः विप०, स परं यस्य । मङ्गल -Sing. for the plural (as it refers to the whole class of Mangulas); soo Malli. जगच्छरण्यस्य - and thorefore not विपत्प्रतीकारपर. farfaq:—of him who is free from desire being always परिपूर्ण ( not only that, but पुर्णात्पूर्णमदुच्यते ) and therefore not भूतिसमुत्सुक. Pár. means to say. -it matters very little whether he is मङ्गलरति or अमङ्गलरति he who has nothing to seek for but is the fulfiller of the wishes of all; who has not a calamity to ward off bat is the warder off of the calamities of the world.

Sl. 77. अकिंचनः – Tat. comp. of the मयूरव्यंसकादि class. and not & Bah. त्रिलोकनाथः व्यवयवो लोकः त्रिलोकस्तस्य नाथः . Having nothing he is the source of wealth of every kind; lord of ( pervading ) the three worlds he can be found in the cremation ground &c.: in fact no one can form an adequate conception of Siva. Cf. माकाम्यं ते विभूतिपु; II. 11.

(Sl.) 78. पिनद्धभोगिपिनद्धः मोर्गा * eerpent यत्र. भोगिन Pr. भोग a serpent’s body or hood + इन्. The अ of अपि may optionally be dropped; 80 अपिनद्ध also. कपालि - Siva, according to the Kås ikhanda, onco got very angry with Brahmâ on hearing the latter’s proud declaration that he ( S’iva ) had sprung from his forehead &c. and created in anger the fierce Kâlabhairava who severed one of the heads of Brahmâ with his nails. Siva, thereafter, wore as Kalabhairava, the skull of Brahma’s head. Cf स ( पितामहः ) मायया महशस्य मोहितो लोकसंभवः । हिरण्यगर्भस्तं माह जाने त्वां चन्द्रशेखर || भालस्थलान्मम पुरा रुद्धः प्रादुरभूद्भवान् । अथेश्वरः पद्मयोः श्रुत्वा गर्ववतीं गिरम् ॥ स कोपतः समुत्पाद्य पुरुषं भैरवाकृतिं । माह पङ्कजजन्मासी शास्यस्तं कालभैरव || (स) वामाङ्गलिनखाग्रेण चकर्स च शिरो विधेः । ( शिवः ) प्राह स्वमूर्तिमपरां भैरवं तं कपर्दिनम् । कपालं वैधसं चापि नीललोहित धारय । चर खं सततं भिक्षां कपालित्रतमास्थितः ॥ काशीखण्ड (as quoted by Mr. Des’ pándo) न विश्वमूर्तेः &० –Cf. विष्णोरि वास्यानवधारणीयमीदृक्तया रूपमियत्तया वा । Rag. XIII. 5. Sl. 79. नृत्या -The dance of Siva is called ताण्डव ( तण्डुना प्रोक्तं ) which is a kind of vehement dance. अभिनय-हृद्रतभावामिव्यअकशरीरचेष्टा: movements of the body indicative of internal foolings; gesticulations. (Sl.) 80. प्रभिन्न –With the temples split open.ie shedding rut. वृष and दिग्वारण are contrasted Who can describe the greatness of S’iva before whom Indra even bends his head, A retort flung with equal force at the Brahmachârin. (88) We may Sl. Sl. विवक्षदPre. P. of the Desid. of बच्. also construe दोषं विवक्षता अतएव च्युतात्मना ( मान्यानां निन्दाकरणात् ). Sl. 82. भावैंक ०. Colely attached by the fooling of love. Entirely swayed by the sentiment of love वचनीयं 900 IV. 21. S1. 88. स्फुरितोत्तरा०स्फुरितमुत्तरं अधिकं यस्मिन् would be the natural way of taking the comp. (see Malli. on Rag. VII 49 ) ; but as this would require the पूर्वनिपात of उत्तर, we sualyse it as स्फुरितन उत्तर: mixed with, conspicuous with उत्तर शब्द आधिक्यं वाणः सन् मिश्रत्वमाह । तथा च-निनाय सात्यर्थहिमोत्तरानिलाः । हिममिश्रा इत्यर्थ | Hemadri on Rag. VI. 50. Some take उत्तर to mean the upper lip : स्फुरितौ उत्तराधरों यस्मिन् Cf. निवार्यतामयं भिक्षुविक्षु: स्फुरिताधरः । न तावन्निन्दकः पापी यथा शृण्वन् शशिप्रभे । Vamana P. यः करोति महादेवनिन्दामात्मविनाशिनीम् । स पापिष्ठतरस्तस्माद्य’ शृणोति स पापभाक् ॥ S.
