(Sl.) 4. समदुः खामित्र &c. -स्थली by Lakshana means the ‘plants and creatures in that place,’ poetically represented as sharing Rati’s grief; cf. अकरोत्पृथिवीरुहानपि स्स्रुतशाखारसवाष्पदुर्दिनान् । Rag. (7.) कृतवानसि विप्रियं - Cf मनसापि न विप्रियं मया कृतपूर्व तव किं जहासि माम् । Rag. VIII. 2. प्रतिकूलं प्रतीपं कुलात्। Cf. When was the hour, I ever contradicted your desire’, Shaks. Henry VIII. II. 4. SL. 8. Rati means to say that knowingly she had given Káma no offence. But in their love-sports she had sometimes taken liberty with him and that might have displeased him. maraisàg-Lovers are often represented as misnaming their sweet-hearts or wives calling them by the name uppermost in their minds through absentmindedness while lost in thoughts about other Indies. (Sl.) 9. far the subj. is (addressed to Rati). faqra wiq: a false assertion made to mislead me; for this sense of कितव / ष्टः स्वमे कितव रमयन कामपि त्वं मयेति। Mog. II. 51; for केतव ef. ध्रुवमस्मि शठः शुचिस्मिते विदितः कैतववत्सलस्तव । Rag. VIII. 49. Rati’s iden is this-If she really lived in Káma’s heart, as he would say she did, she should have been reduced to ashes along with his body. (Sl.) 25. sqqq-Lit, to favour her i, e. to offer consolation to her, to sympathise with her. (1Sl.) 26. FACTO -The namul is used when the whole part of the body is oppressed or suffers pain. See com. (Sl.) 28. माधव: - मधुरेव माधवः; स्वार्थे अणू (अ). न खलु प्रेम &o. - The idea is this-The love of men for their wives may not be always steady, but that for their real friends is; this consideration ought to induce you to show yourself to him at least. ( 71 ) The Rāma. thus (Sl.) 28. अमुना - Herein she tolls Káma how much indebted he is to his friend Mådhava for the valuable service rendered to him by the latter ससुरा ० -सुष्ठु राति ददाति अभीष्टमिति सुरः । secounts for the namo सुरा( the nectar churned out of the ocean) प्रतिग्रहाद्देवाः सुरा इत्यभिविश्रुताः । असुर derived as अस्यन्ति क्षिपन्ति देवान; or सुरविरुद्धा: the nogative particlo न expressing विरोध असुर, however, is the older of the two words and meant in the Veda the mighty (असु प्राणस्तेन तद्वन्तो भवन्ति) aud was used for the Supreme Spirit and also as an epithet of the gods, Indra. Agni &e, Apte’s Dic बिसतन्तु - Sometimes the lotus-fibres are said to fonn Madana’s bow-string. जगदाज्ञां &c. - The passion of love is very strong in spring and so Madhu may be said to be helping Kama in the work of subduing the world. The Act. const is अयं जगत् जगता वा धनुषः आज्ञां कारितवान् - the Pass, come. therefore i–अनंन जगद् धनुषः आज्ञां कारितं or अमुना जगता धनुष आज्ञा कारिता. Soo com. Sce असुर (51.) 30. गत एवं &c. - असन्निवृत्तये गतः । gone never to come back, once: for all ie dead. घूमितां - implies continuous and tormenting grief. The wick of a lamp that is blown out also emits smoke for sometime. This implies that she also would suffer the torment for a short time (as she was going to immolate herself shortly after ), (31.) वैशसं from शम् with वि to kill; destruction, Rati means to say, as Madana’s wife she formed a half of him and as she was spared, the work of destruction was but half done by cruel fate. अर्धस्य वैशसमर्धवेशसम्; cf. अथवा मम भाग्यविलवादशनिः कल्पित एव वेवसा । यदनेन तरुर्न पातितः क्षपिता तद्विपाश्रिता लता || Rag. VIII. 47. A Sl. 33. An instance of rich poetic imagery and wealth of illustration सह मेघेन - As soon as the cloud dissolves into rain i. .. ceases to exist as a cloud, the lightning-flashı also disappesra. Cf. शशिनं पुनरेति शर्वरी दयिता द्वंद्वचरं पतत्रिणम् । Rag. VIII. 56. (Sl.) 34 विभावसु-विभा वसु wealth वस्थ. Cf. for the reverse of the idea-नवसंस्तरेपि ते मृडु दूयेत पदक्रमर्पितम् । तदिदं विषहिष्यते कथं वद नामो चिताधिरोहणम् ॥ Rag. VIII. 57. ( 72 ) SI. 36. आवयोः सहायताThe state or position of being & helper मे चिताम् - Aja although similarly circumstanced could not do the same for the roason given in Rag. VIII. 72. Sl. 36. दक्षिणवात - It is but fit that Rati shonld here refer to the Malaya breeze, the agent of Káma himself and a willing helpnate of Madhu. For the breeze from the south, especially the mountain Malays blows the spring season. The fire thus fained would burn briskly and enable Rati to go to her husband the more quickly. Cf. मुकुलायितबहुतको वाति दक्षिणपवनकः । list. J. 14. SI. 3. एक एव - One only aud not physically different as husband and wife they whole. Cf. supra, zīdastý 8). 31. two: for though formed but one (61.) 38 परलोकविधी -परलोकस्य परलोकाय वा विधिः तस्मै । परलोकः मृतः ording to some ( परो लोक : यस्य ) निवपे: -वपू with नि to make an offering to the deceased. पितृदानं निवापः स्यात् Amars. small SI. 98. शफरी - The Saphara is described 39 glittering tish, which darting rapidly through the water is not anaptly compared to the twinkling glances of a sparkling eye. Wilson, notes on the Mogs see Kir. VI.16. (शफरी रिस्फुरितचारुदृशः ). Cf ततो वहिं समादाय सा रतिः कामवल्लभा । अनुगन्तुं स्वभर्तारमुद्योगमकरोन्मुन ॥ तता रतिं कामपत्नी स्थित देहविमुक्तये | आकाशसंभवा वाणी माहेदं मधुराक्षरम् ॥ Sl. 41. उदीरित - stirred up, excited, ofन्द्रय: - his sensuality being roused. agaraj-Malli. says . Sarasvati is the uame of the evening twilight or सन्ध्या; cf. गायत्री नाम पूर्वाह्णे सावित्री मध्यमे दिन । सरस्वती च साया सेव सन्ध्या विधा स्मृता ॥ Some commentators give the name of Brahman’s daughter as तिलोत्तमा. अकरोत्प्रभा० -Allusion to the Kali. Pu, Brahmå fell in love with his daughter Sandhya (also called Saraswati); but being laughed at by the sages and by S’iva for this weakness of mind cursed Káma, as the author of the mischief, in the manner stated here. of. बह्मापि तनयां सन्ध्यां दृष्ट्रा पूर्वमथात्मनः । कामायाशु मनश्वके त्यक्त्वा बुद्धि सुतेति वै ॥ तस्याश्व चलितं चित्तं कामचाणविलोडितम् । कषीणां पेक्षता तेष मानसानां महात्मनाम् । भर्गस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा सोपहासं विधिं प्रति ॥ आत्मनश्वलचित्तत्वममर्यादमृषीन्मति । कामस्य तादृशं भावं मुनिमोहकरं तदा । हड्डा सन्ध्या स्वयं तत्र त्रपामापातिदुःखिता । ततस्तु ब्रह्मणा शंते मदने तदनन्तरम् । x x अमर्षवशमापन्ना सन्ध्या ध्यानपराऽभवत् ॥ (as quoted by Mr. Deah.). Her form is thus described in the B. P. Sk. III. Oh, 20 तो कणचरणा- (73) भोजा मदविह्वललोचनाम् । कांचीकलापविलसद्दुकूलाच्छन्नरोधसम् । अन्योन्याश्लेष योनिरन्तर पयोधराम् । सुनसां सुद्विजा स्निग्धहासलीलावलोकनाम् | गृहन्ती वीडयात्मानं नीलालकवरूथिनीम् ॥ 29 - According to another vorsion Sandhya on seeing her father affected by passion assumed the form of a female deer, on which Brahmâ became a deer and followed her. S’iva seeing him in that state shot an arrow from his Pinaka, where upon Brahma, with his head lopped off, remained suspended in the sky in the form of the constellation gun and the arrow of S’iva became the constellation 3 chasing it. The fable is thus explaind by Kumárila Bhatta –प्रजापतिस्तावत्प्रजापालनाधिकारादादित्य एव उच्यते । स चारुणवेलायामुषम्युदयन्नभ्येति । सा तदागमनादेवोपजायत इति तद्दुहितृत्वेन व्यपदिश्यते । तस्यां चारुणकिरणाख्यची जनिक्षेपात्स्त्रीपुरुष संयोगवदुपचारः । S] 42 प्रवणीकृतः -inclined to favour; from प्रवण. सरस्वतीCf. या कुर्याद्रिरिसुतां हरः पाणिगृहीतिकाम् । तदा भवान् शरीरेण समग्रताम् ॥ Kalikâ P. Sl. 43. धर्म - one of the Prajāpatis and the father of Káma, by his wife S’raddha, a daughter of Daksha. He was created by Brahmá for maintaining the creation in order. He is represented as having the form of a bull, losing one of his logs at the ond of each ngo (of स सिसृक्षुः प्रजास्वादी पालनं तास्वचिंतयत् । तस्य चिंतयतः स्वगाद्दक्षिणाख्यात् सकुण्डलः । प्रादुर्बभूव पुरुषः श्वेतमाल्यानुलेपनः । तं दृष्ट्रोवाच भगवांश्वतुष्पादं वृषाकृतिं । पालयेमाः प्रजाः पुत्र स्वं ज्येष्ठो जगतो भव । इत्युक्तः स समुत्तस्थो चतुष्पादः कृते युगे । त्रेतायां स त्रिभिः पर्दाभ्यां वै द्वापरेऽभवत् । कलावेकेन पादेन प्रजाः पालयते विभुः ॥ वराहपुराण as quoted by Mr. Des’ pande ) अशनेः & Tho curse is compared to the stroke of thunder-bolt ( lightning ); and its termination, owing to clemency, to Amṛta, Cf. for a similar idea -वज्रादपि कठोराणि मृदूनि कुसुमादपि । लोकोत्तराणां चेतांसि को हि विज्ञातुमर्हति ॥ Uttar. II. 7. The Foot, however, says clsowhere~-~ ( In tho case of great sages ) उष्णत्वमग्न्यातपसंप्रयोगाच्छेत्यं हि यत्सा प्रकृतिजंलस्य । Rag. V. 54. P (61.) 45. व्यवसाय - Fixed purpose, determination. सुचरितार्थपदे : - The meaning of which was well attained, hence of agreeable import; or very significant.
